The listeria outbreak that prompted Blue Bell Creameries to recall their entire product line dates to 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

After weeks of gradual recalls, the company recalled all its ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet and other frozen treats sold in 23 states because they could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the company said Monday. The bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and others with weak immune systems.

The CDC recommends consumers do not eat any Blue Bell brand products.

Blue Bell Creameries has expanded its nationwide recall to include all their products after more containers were found to be tainted with Listeria.

The company issued a video statement a short time ago saying it is voluntarily recalling all their products after finding that 2 containers of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream tested positive for listeriosis.

In the video, CEO Paul Kruse issued an apology for this situation, saying : “We are heartbroken over this situation, and apologize to all of our loyal Blue Bell fans and customers.”

The recall now includes all ice creams, sherbets, frozen yogurts and frozen snacks ; the products were made at three locations: the company’s Brenham plant, its facility in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and a facility in Alabama.

According to the Texas-based company, they “can’t say with certainty” how the products became contaminated at this time and are doing this as a precautionary measure.

Kruse also said in a written statement that the company is working to resolve the issue and determine how it happened.

Anyone who is concerned can contact the FDA at  http://www.fda.gov, call Blue Bell at  1-866-608-3940 Monday – Friday 9 A.M. –  9 P.M., Saturday 11 A.m. – 3 P.m.  EST or go to bluebell.com.

Unusual Ice Cream Recalls Raise Questions About Cause
April 24, 2015

WASHINGTON - WASHINGTON (AP) - Major recalls from two well-known ice cream companies due to the discovery of listeria bacteria raise questions about how the pathogen could have contaminated multiple ice cream manufacturing plants - and whether the discoveries are related.

Blue Bell Creameries in Brenham and Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams of Ohio both took products off shelves this week after listeria was discovered in their products

The recalls are unusual: Listeria is rarely found in ice cream because it can't grow at freezing temperatures. A spokesman for the Food and Drug Administration says it has no evidence, for now, that the two recalls are connected.
