Five things we learned from Lonna Lauramore Barton's custody hearing

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

The mother of missing toddler Lonzie Barton was back in court Wednesday for a custody hearing. Lonna Lauramore Barton and Chris Barton appeared for the custody hearing of their 5-year-old daughter.

Here is what we learned:

1. Both of Lonzie Barton's parents took a drug test right after the custody hearing. Both said in court they aren't abusing drugs or alcohol.

2. Lonna Lauramore Barton's lawyer says that his client will pass a drug test, and even she doesn't, she could still regain custody of her 5-year-old daughter.

3. Lonna Lauramore Barton's lawyer also said Lonna sees the girl three times a week for 90 minutes at a time.

4. The 5-year-old, Lonzie Barton's sister, is seeing a therapist and doing well. She will remain with her maternal grandmother.

5.  Lonna Lauramore Barton and Chris Barton will undergo mental evaluations before the next custody hearing, which is scheduled for Oct. 28.

Lonzie Barton's parents arrested in Baker County on drug charges

BAKER COUNTY, Fla. —

The parents of missing 21-month-old Lonzie Barton were arrested Wednesday night in Baker County on drug charges.

Baker County Sheriff Joey Dobson said investigators have been surveilling Lonna Lauramore Barton and Chris Barton for nearly a month after receiving intelligence.

Chris Barton is charged with sale of opiate or derivative within 1,000 feet of a place of worship, sale of synthetic narcotics within 1,000 feet of a specified area and possession of synthetic narcotics with intent to sell within 1,000 feet of specified area.

Undercover investigators purchased opiates Tuesday night off of Chris Barton within 1,000 feet of a place of worship, Dobson said. On Wednesday, Chris Barton sold synthetic narcotics to the investigators within 1,000 feet of a specific area, Dobson said. Chris Barton was arrested on Interstate 10.

Lonna Lauramore Barton is charged with sale of synthetic narcotics within 1,000 feet of specified area, possession and use of drug paraphernalia and possession of synthetic narcotics with intent to sell within 1,000 feet of a specified area.

Undercover investigators purchased Molly from Lonna Lauramore Barton twice on Wednesday, Dobson said. She was arrested in a room at the American Inn on State Road 121 in Macclenny.

A third person, Sean Clayton Hall, was also arrested and charged with sale of synthetic narcotics within 1,000 feet of a specified area and possession of synthetic narcotics with intent to sell within 1,000 feet of a specified area.

"They had been together in the hotel room," Dobson said. "Mr. Barton had left the hotel room with Mr. Hall. She (Lonna Lauramore Barton) was in the room at the American Inn by herself."

Dobson said they were cooperative and didn't have anything much to say.

"Ms. Barton was a little bit surprised when we went in the door; didn't have a lot to say other than she didn't know why we were there," Dobson said.

MACCLENNY, Fla. -- Chris and Lonna Barton, the parents of missing toddler Lonzie Barton, were arrested on felony drug charges after allegedly selling drugs to undercover cops Tuesday night and Wednesday, the Baker County Sheriff's Office announced at a news conference late Wednesday night.

The Bartons had been under surveillance by authorities for weeks, Sheriff Joey Dobson told reporters just moments after the Bartons and a third suspect could be seen being escorted in handcuffs into the Baker County Jail.

Both had been "under the yes of narcotics investigators with the [Sheriff's Office] for almost a month," Dobson said.

They're expected to appear in Baker County Court on a list of drug charges about 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

"This is not about the Lonzie case," the sheriff said.

The pair and a third suspect, Sean Clayton Hall, were arrested separately after multiple drug deals -- two on Tuesday and one on Wednesday -- involving undercover deputies at the Motel 6 off State Road 121 in Macclenny, Sheriff Dobson told reporters.

"That was just where the drug transactions took place," said Dobson, who declined to speculate about whether Chris Barton had bonded Lonna out of the Duval County Jail with drug money.

Chris Barton was arrested for the sale and possession of molly along with drug paraphernalia charges, Sheriff Dobson said. Lonna and Hall, meanwhile, were arrested for the sale of the same substance.

Lonna Lauramore Barton, 25, was "surprised" when deputies arrested her at the motel, he added. Chris Barton was arrested on the road after leaving the same motel, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Their son, 21-month-old Lonzie, disappeared in July from a Jacksonville apartment complex. Since then, the search for the child has turned into what the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is calling a murder investigation.

Lonna Barton had been previously arrested by JSO on charges of child neglect and giving false information to law enforcement, but had since been bonded out by Chris Barton.

At the request of the State Attorney's Office, Chris and Lonna Barton underwent drug testing Wednesday at the Duval County Courthouse.

JSO was not involved in the couple's arrest Wednesday night, Dobson said.

Lonna, Chris Barton face judge on drug charges

MACCLENNY, Fla. -

The parents of the toddler who disappeared July 24 appeared before a Baker County judge after their arrests Wednesday night on charges of selling drugs.

Bond of $350,000 was set for Lonna Lauramore Barton, 25, who is charged with selling synthetic narcotics within 1,000 feet of a church and possession of drug equipment. Christopher Barton, 41, was ordered held on $600,000 on the same charges, plus the sale of opium.

Their arrest comes hours after the couple was in court in Duval County for a custody hearing during which a judge ordered them to be screened for alcohol, drugs and mental health.

Baker County Sheriff Joey Dobson said the pair, along with Shawn Clayton Hall, 32, were arrested Wednesday night after a 30-day investigation.

REPORT: Christopher Barton, Lonna Lauramore Barton, Shawn Hall arrest report

Hall was ordered held on $310,000 bond on charges of selling synthetic narcotics within 1,000 feet of a church and possession of drug equipment.

Lonna Barton was out on bond on charges of child neglect and lying to police in connection with the July 24 disappearance of her 21-month-old son, Lonzie. Prosecutors in Jacksonville said they will file a motion to have her bond revoked.

The arrest report says a confidential informant was told Lonna and Chris Barton used syringes to inject themselves with Molly, also known as MMDA or ecstasy, and they encouraged the informant to do the same.

Dobson also said that Chris Barton was caught selling the synthetic opiate suboxone.

In court Thursday morning facing felony drug charges, neither Lonna nor Chris Barton showed little emotion.

When setting bond, the judge said that given her history and the pending charges against her in Duval County, he had to consider public safety.

Dobson said Lonna and Chris Barton's arrests were in no way related to the disappearance of their son, Lonzie, that the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate.

Mother of Ruben Ebron: He’s not a murderer
Wanda Ebron answers questions from the State Attorney's Office about her son

 Published On: Sep 18 2015 04:55:00 PM EDT   Updated  15 m

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

The mother of the prime suspect in the disappearance of toddler Lonzie Barton was summoned to the State Attorney's Office on Friday to talk to investigators.

Wanda Ebron said she was asked about a number of things, including a rape accusation against Ruben Ebron that she said has been dropped by his ex-girlfriend, who is also the mother of his three children.

Wanda Ebron said she feels as if her family is being punished while prosecutors work to build a case against her son, who police believe killed 21-month-old Lonzie.

Wanda Ebron acknowledged that her son has made some mistakes in his life, but she said murder is not one of them.

“I don’t think he would kill a child,” Wanda Ebron said. “I know it. I went through the grieving process, and then I had to snap myself back into reality. I know my son. He’s not a murderer.”

Clutching a Bible and standing in front of the State Attorney's Office on Friday, Wanda Ebron defended Ruben, who's been jailed since the night of Lonzie Barton’s disappearance. She said she was subpoenaed to talk about a rape accusation brought against Ebron by the mother of his three children. The woman has since decided not to pursue it.

“I really believe that they are trying to build a case, and (his ex-girlfriend) did drop the rape case for reasons that she told the state attorney, and we realized that the state does have the right to pick it up,” Wanda Ebron said.

Wanda Ebron said she believes that Lonzie is still alive somewhere. She said a woman claiming to be Lonna Barton, Lonzie's mother, called her on the phone and told her something that caused her and her husband to breathe easier. She wouldn’t explain what the woman said, but she said the State Attorney's Office is aware of the information.

“There's no way the baby can be dead if she’s expecting Ruben and her to be together shortly,” Wanda Ebron said.

They literally stood before a judge declaring that they did not use drugs. And their child is missing.

They immediately went to a motel where they used and sold drugs.

Do I have this right?????

Unfortunately, that's my understanding too.  I figured as much when I noticed she had a dress on.

Ebron barred from talking to parents, private attorney conversations
Prime suspect in the disappearance of Lonzie Barton in court Tuesday

 Published On: Sep 22 2015 09:09:39 AM EDT   Updated  7 m

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

Ruben Ebron, the prime suspect in the disappearance of 21-month-old Lonzie Barton, was back in a Duval County courtroom Tuesday afternoon, as his attorneys argued to changed the original no contact order recently handed down by a judge.

Ebron's lawyers argued that they should be able to have private conversations with their client in jail and that they should not be forced to be present whenever Ebron's parents wish to contact him.

In a stunning move, Judge Marianne Aho said that if it was such an issue she would take the parents out of the equation, since they are listed as witnesses in the case being formed by the state attorney, and denied contact with them altogether.

Aho also said that Ebron's attorneys, who are state public defenders, were not allowed to have private contact with their client and that a corrections officer would have to be present whenever they spoke to Ebron.

Attorneys for the state argued that Ebron lost the right to have private conversations with his attorneys when he tried to escape from jail, a sentiment that Aho agreed with.

Lonna Barton faces new bond hearing
Mother of missing toddler, Lonzie Barton, due in Duval County Court

Published On: Sep 22 2015 11:03:13 PM EDT   Updated On: Sep 22 2015 11:39:33 PM EDT

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

Lonna Barton, the mother of missing toddler Lonzie Barton, is expected to appear before a Duval County judge Wednesday morning, after being transported from the Baker County Jail where she was arrested last Wednesday on drug charges.

Barton had been out on bond in Duval County after being arrested for child neglect and lying to police, but now that bond is expected to be revoked after her arrest in Baker County.

The state charged Lonna Barton and Lonzie’s father, Chris Barton, with possession and intent to distribute synthetic narcotics.

After her arrest the state issued a motion to revoke her bond citing her arrest for possession and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances. The motion also said that Lonna Barton was arrested with two other individuals, one of whom assisted in posting her bond, Chris Barton.

Teague said that if the bond is revoked her stay in jail may not be a short one.

“A normal felony case lasts, on average, about three months. On a case of this nature, it’s probably going to last longer than that. I mean, it could go up to 6 months, a year or even longer,” Teague said.

Lonna Barton’s hearing is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday.
