White died at home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, said his brother, Verdine White.

He was 74.

A former session drummer, White founded Earth, Wind & Fire in the late 1960s. The group went on to sell more than 90 million albums worldwide, displaying a flashy and eclectic musical style that incorporated his influences from growing up in Memphis, Tenn., and working at the influential Chicago music labels Chess and Okeh.

The band's many hits included "September," ''Shining Star," a cover of the Beatles' "Got to Get You into My Life" and "Boogie Wonderland." Earth, Wind & Fire won six Grammys and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.

His younger brother and band member Verdine White confirmed the news Thursday, saying Maurice passed away in his sleep after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
 
Verdine described his older brother as his 'hero and best friend' and asked for privacy for the family 'as we start what will be a very difficult and life changing transition in our lives.'
 
'The light is he, shining on you and me,' he tweeted.
 
Earth, Wind & Fire burst onto the music scene in 1975 with the number one single Shining Star and went on to have a string of hits through the late 70s and early 80s including Got To Get You Into My Life, September, Boogie Wonderland and After the Love has Gone.
