Ryan Lochte: A champion swimmer caught in a riptide of self-absorption

The Washington Post
By Sally Jenkins
4 hrs ago -8/19/2016

RIO DE JANEIRO — Ryan Lochte is the dumbest bell that ever rang. The 32-year-old swimmer is so landlocked in juvenility that he pulled an all-nighter with guys young enough to call him uncle. His story to NBC’s Billy “what-are-you-wearing” Bush had the quality of a kid exaggerating the size of a fish, and notice how he was the hero of every detail. That was always the most dubious, implausible part.  Read more...

CBS News/ August 24, 2016, 10:07 AM
Doubt cast on Brazil's version of U.S. swimmers' Rio incident

The Ryan Lochte story appeared to be over, right along with the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

The gold medal-winning swimmer apologized for an “over-exaggerated” story broadcast around the world about being robbed at gunpoint after partying in Rio late one night with three of his American teammates.

Brazilian police insisted there was no robbery at all.

As a result of Brazilian officials insisting the swimmer lied, Lochte has lost several big name sponsors and become the butt of countless jokes.

It was important for Brazil to dismiss the claims, as many had questioned the county’s ability to keep athletes safe during the Olympics.

Now, however, a new investigation into the incident, as well as the retelling of the event by one of the swimmers who had been held by Brazilian authorities and allegedly forced to pay a “fine” to leave the country, have corroborated some of Lochte’s “over-exaggerated” claims.

João Batista Damasceno, a Rio judge, told USA Today that the actions of the guard or guards at the gas station could be rightly interpreted as a robbery.

“If they only asked for the amount of the damage, it may not be a robbery,” Damasceno told USA Today. “But if the amount taken is higher than the value of the damages, with the use of a weapon by the ‘security,’ this is robbery.”

Ryan Lochte, U.S. swimmers never questioned about alleged Rio vandalism
Taylor Barnes, Special for USA TODAY Sports 1:38 p.m. EDT August 24, 2016

RIO DE JANEIRO — Police in Rio never questioned four U.S. swimmers about their alleged vandalism of a gas station restroom, further evidence that a poster was the only property damaged by Ryan Lochte during a stop that ended in a heated exchange with security guards and set off an international controversy that upstaged the Olympics.

The details came to light Tuesday after USA TODAY Sports viewed transcripts of testimony given by the swimmers to Rio law enforcement officials. An extensive review of surveillance footage and a visit to the gas station as part of a USA TODAY Sports investigation published Sunday had previously supported a statement by swimmer Gunnar Bentz that he did not see anyone vandalize the restroom.

Rio police charge Ryan Lochte with filing false robbery report
USA TODAY Sports 8:12 p.m. EDT August 25, 2016

Ryan Lochte has been charged by Brazilian police with filing a false report over an incident during the Olympics in Rio de Janerio, according to a statement obtained by USA TODAY Sports from the Rio police Thursday.

Lochte will be informed of the charges in the United States and can then decide whether to introduce a defense in Brazil. The statement also said a copy of the evidence could be sent to the International Olympic Committee's ethics commission.

"The U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte has been charged with the crime of false communication," the statement read, in part.

Poynter: How USA TODAY Unraveled Ryan Lochte’s Rio Drama
Staff, USA TODAY NETWORK PRESS ROOM 4:15 p.m. EDT August 26, 2016

This morning, Poynter published an article on how USA TODAY’s investigation and coverage of Ryan Lochte’s incident unraveled the drama in Rio. Despite the chaos among the decorated Olympian, his fellow teammates, the Rio police, and extensive media coverage by other outlets, USA TODAY led by managing editor David Meeks, was laser-focused on the truth of the story. The article points out that the coverage to date “provides some insights into handling a fast-moving story with caution.”

How USA Today unraveled Ryan Lochte’s Rio drama
By Kristen Hare • August 26, 2016

Last Thursday, Taylor Barnes and other journalists crowded into a theater across the street from a police station in Rio de Janeiro. The police were there to talk about what happened with four U.S. Olympic swimmers at a gas station the previous Sunday.

David Meeks, managing editor of USA Today Sports Media Group, was watching a feed of the conference from the Olympics press center in Rio.

The head of the city's civil police did most of the talking that day. He didn't lead the day-to-day investigation, so he was cautious. But, he told reporters, U.S. swimmers Ryan Lochte, Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen had trashed a bathroom, and Lochte lied about being robbed.

Barnes filed her story about the press conference. Then she, Meeks and other reporters for USA Today Sports kept asking questions. By Monday, they'd begun to tug at threads woven neatly together by Rio police, much of the media and a wave of opinion on social media.

On Wednesday, they unraveled them altogether, presenting a story much closer to the one Lochte first gave.

The result: Nuanced pieces of reporting on a swiftly changing story that brought finger-pointing from all sides, with journalists caught in the middle. Although Lochte's saga has yet to conclude, USA Today's coverage to date provides some insights into handling a fast-moving story with caution. Here are a few examples.

Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte suspended for 10 months and World Championships
8:42 p.m. EDT September 7, 2016

Twelve-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte has been suspended for 10 months for the gas station incident that became an embarrassment during the Rio Olympics, a person with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday.

The punishment was handed down by both the International Olympic Committee, the United States Olympic Committee and USA Swimming.

The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the decision has not been announced publicly, said Lochte's suspension is longer than that of the other three U.S. swimmers he was with at the gas station that night.

Lochte will also be banned from the 2017 world championship meet, which will be held in Budapest next July.

Ryan Lochte Talks 'Heartbreaking' Swimming Suspension, Putting Rio Robbery Scandal Behind Him
09/09/2016 AT 10:45 AM EDT

Ryan Lochte is once more making it clear he's ready to step away from the "lowest" times of his Rio robbery scandal.

The 32-year-old Olympic swimmer and his new Dancing with the Stars partner Cheryl Burke are sitting down with Ellen DeGeneres on Monday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show to address the international incident, the advice he received from teammate Michael Phelps and his future in the sport.

In the weeks after he lodged a false report of armed robbery, Lochte tells DeGeneres, "I reached the lowest point of my entire life that I never thought I would go to. I was in a really dark place, and I didn't know if I should come out, just hide my entire life.

He says his friends and family reassured him during those trying times and he realized, "You can't always hide the rest of your life just embrace this opportunity so that's why I'm here."

Dancing with the Stars premieres Monday at 8 p.m. ET, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show airs weekdays (check local listings).

Ryan Lochte protesters arrested after storming the ‘Dancing With the Stars’ stage on live TV

Embattled Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte’s highly-anticipated “Dancing With the Stars” debut was interrupted Monday night when two male protesters stormed the stage and escorted out by security. They were later arrested by Los Angeles police.

At first, it was unclear exactly what happened because the ABC cameras did not show the incident. As judge Carrie Ann Inaba was offering her remarks after Lochte’s performance toward the end of the live two-hour premiere, viewers only heard the sounds of a scuffle and saw the shocked look on Inaba’s face as she started saying “Excuse me!”

On Tuesday morning, ABC released video via “Good Morning America” that showed the men approaching Lochte before security intervened, tackling one of them.
