Kansas City police have asked the public for help locating a missing woman after her burned-out car was found Saturday.

Jessica Runions, 21, of Raymore, Mo., was last seen at a house party Thursday evening. KSHB reported that she attended the party with her boyfriend.

At around 2 a.m. Saturday, authorities discovered Runions' black 2012 Chevy Equinox near an overpass in south Kansas City. Search teams canvassed the area near where the car was found for several hours before halting due to darkness.

"We are very concerned for her safety. It's suspicious circumstances, her vehicle unoccupied, burned in a remote area ... [we are] just asking anyone who has had contact with her to call the police," police spokeswoman Capt. Stacey Graves said.

Jessica's aunt, Michelle Runions, told the station that the missing woman left the party with her boyfriend's childhood friend, Kylr Yust. Local media reported that Yust's ex-girlfriend, Kara Kopetsky, disappeared in May 2007, a week after filing a protection order against him. Kopetsky has never been found.

A Missouri man was arrested Sunday for burning the SUV of a 21-year-old woman who vanished on Thursday night, police said.

Kylr Yust, 27, was seen leaving a party on Thursday with Jessica Runions, of Raymore, south of Kansas City. On Friday night at 10:30 p.m. (11:30 p.m. ET), Runions was reported missing, and nearly four hours later, her black Chevy Equinox was found burned and unoccupied in South Kansas City.
Yust was arrested at 8:30 a.m. in Edwards, about two hours southeast of Kansas City, and charged with knowingly burning Runions' vehicle, Kansas City police said.

Kansas City police along with the Missouri Search and Rescue team are searching in the Grandview and Belton area for Jessica Runions, who has been missing since Sept. 8.

Police would not provide details on where the search is taking place but indicated it was a large area.

“We have been searching for Jessica Runions since her disappearance,” said Sgt. Kari Thompson, a police spokeswoman. “We are doing everything we can to find this young lady.”

Runions, 21, of Raymore, was last seen with Kylr Yust leaving a gathering in south Kansas City.

Days after Runions’ disappearance, authorities charged Yust, 28, with burning her 2012 black Chevrolet Equinox, which authorities found in the early morning hours of Sept. 10.

He is not charged in the disappearance of Runions.

Thursday’s search gives hope to the woman’s family.

“Anytime they go out it’s encouraging,” said Linda Runions, Jessica’s grandmother. “We feel like when they go out, there’s a purpose.”

Family and friends, as well as strangers, have been out searching many times on their own since Runions disappeared. Large groups of volunteers have combed areas in south Kansas City and around Belton.

On top of those searches, Linda Runions said she and her husband, along with a small group of relatives, go out at least twice a week looking for her granddaughter.

“We search areas that are hidden,” she said. “And my son (Jessica’s father) goes out after work. He goes until he can’t see anymore.”

On Thursday, Thompson said investigators were examining social media, including those connected to Runions and others related to the disappearance. Examining social media is a common practice with missing persons and in other investigations.

“We have worked collaboratively with the Missouri Search and Rescue organization since the beginning of this investigation,” Thompson said.
 

Yust was questioned in the 2007 disappearance of his ex-girlfriend Kara Kopetsky.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The first court appearance for the man accused of burning a missing Raymore woman’s vehicle was continued to Friday.

Kylr Yust has been charged with knowingly burning Jessica Runions vehicle, and he remains in custody in the Jackson County Detention Center.

Runions was last seen leaving a house party in September.  Police found Runions’ 2012 Chevrolet Equinox burned, in a remote area near Blue River Road and Bannister a day after her mom reported her missing on Friday, September 9. Investigators searched the area surrounding the SUV without success.

Witnesses told police that Jessica left the party with Yust, 28, once a suspect in the disappearance of his then-girlfriend, Belton teenager Kara Kopetsky, 17. She hasn’t been seen since 2007.

Police wanted to question him about Jessica’s disappearance and he was located and arrested on family property in Edwards, Mo., about two hours southeast of Kansas City, on September 11.  He didn’t answer reporters’ questions about Runions’ whereabouts when he was transferred to the jail.

A search party looking for a missing Missouri woman in Kansas City stumbled across the remains of a second unrelated body Saturday, according to authorities.

Friends and relatives were looking for 21-year-old Jessica Runions, who was reported missing in September, when they made the gruesome find, police said – one week after they uncovered another body.

"Two bodies, two weeks?" Jessica's father John Runions said to the Kansas City Star.  "It's unbelievable. ... We're not going to stop looking until we find her. And if we find other people along the way, that's good. Families deserve closure."

The first body they found was of 21-year-old Brandon Herring, who had been missing since November. Investigators have ruled Herring's death a homicide.

Police haven't identified the body in the most recent discovery, which was found north of the Kansas City Zoo in a wooded area next to the Blue River. Police have called it a suspicious death, but not a homicide.

You are correct cw618.  A girl that lives at the house closest to where they were found said that's a very well known area for kids to go and drink, get high, etc.   

Also someone that knew Kylr and what his truck looked like called the Belton PD the day after Kara went "missing" and told them he spotted that truck in that same spot.  The news has reported that the info was turned over to the FBI????  So, why weren't cadavers or police out there 10 yrs ago?  It just blows my mind.

BELTON, Mo. - One set of human remains found in Cass County has been identified as Jessica Runions.

The Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office positively identified one of the victims as Runions Wednesday night, according to a news release from the Cass County Sheriff's Office.

Kansas City police said Runions's death is being investigated as a homicide.

The remains of the second victim have not been identified. It could takes months to identify them. snipped.....
