Mother of Missing Alpine Student Looking for Answers

Posted: Fri 4:56 PM, Oct 14, 2016  |  Updated: Sat 10:38 AM, Oct 15, 2016

ALPINE -- Alpine Police confirmed in a Friday Facebook Post that Zuzu Renee Verk, a 22-year-old white female 5’0”, 110 pounds with blonde hair and blue eyes has not been heard from since the early morning hours Wednesday. APD said she was also an employee at the University. Police said they believe she may be “endangered”.

Her mother, Lori Verk, tells us that Zuzu and her on-again off-again boyfriend went out to to the movies with a group of friends Tuesday night.

Zuzu's mother says that she still hadn't heard from her come Friday. She then called Zuzu's boyfriend, who said he also hadn't heard from her.

Verk tells CBS 7 News that Zuzu's boyfriend said she never showed up for her mid-term exam on Wednesday and she missed her shift at work.

Verk says Zuzu and her friends were planning to go camping in Big Bend National Park on Friday just after mid-terms.

Verk tells us Zuzu's phone is dead. We reached out to police to ask more about what we learned from the mother, but a dispatcher said they were “too busy” to talk about the incident and hung up. A family friend plans to put up missing signs in the Midland-Odessa area.

Anyone with information on Verk's whereabouts is asked to contact the Alpine Police Department at (432) 837-3486.

Alpine Avalanche
22 hrs ·

HERE'S THE LATEST THAT WE KNOW on Zuzu Renee Verk, a 22-year-old woman missing in Alpine, as of about 11:15 a.m. Saturday.

According Alpine Police Chief Russell Scown, there are no leads in the case at this time.

APD, with assistance from Brewster County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Texas Department of Public Safety, and Sul Ross police - with help from Brewster County Emergency Management - are all searching the neighborhood where Verk lived by helicopter, on foot and from patrol cars, and extending out to highways and fields throughout the area.

Officers are also passing out flyers and sending out alerts to try to generate some information, but Scown said, "So far, we haven't received anything."

Scown said officers will limit how local trash is handled by the disposal services in case they have to go back and look for any clues. "That's standard procedure," he said.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of Verk, call the Alpine Police Dept. at 432-837-3486.

It's an ongoing search that has left the small community in shock.

Neighbors led us to an apartment home believed to be Verk's where signs of a police search are evident.

Fliers have been posted around several businesses as residents continue to show their support.

Residents this morning tell CBS 7 crews that Verk was last seen on Harrison Street around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday morning just before she went missing.

Verk's father reveals to CBS 7 that friends are also searching through the Trans-Pecos area.

Zuzu R. Verk — BRI Undergraduate Researcher

My name is Zuzu Verk and I’m from Fort Worth, Texas. I moved to Alpine and transferred to Sul Ross State University from UNT almost a year ago. A growing passion for nature drew me to west Texas where I interned for the Davis Mountains State Park. After deciding to pursue conservation biology as a collegiate career, I packed up my car and my dog and the rest was history. I’ve since fallen in love with the natural resource management program and all the opportunities it presents. Every day that goes by, the terrain and wildlife remind me of how beautiful this frontier is, and how truly lucky I am to be here.

During my undergraduate mentorship I have worked with the Borderlands Research Institute and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to study the survival rate of pronghorn fawns in the Trans-Pecos area. This research began with nightly captures where we tagged, collared, and collected data from young fawns. They were then tracked every day, if possible, to check for mortality, behavior, movements, and any other relevant information. Upon locating a mortality, remains were analyzed to gain a better understanding of the high death rates of these animals. I have also integrated questions and monitoring concerning the increase of movements throughout their growth. This project has proven to be extremely rewarding and educational.
Not only am I learning how to properly conduct field research, but I am also being coached through scientific writing, thought processes, and what it really means to be a part of a research team. None of it would have been possible without the time and dedication of our incredible pronghorn team members. The experiences I’ve attained from this project are truly priceless.

The search expanded Wednesday to other Texas counties for a missing former Timber Creek High School student who last seen a week ago in far West Texas.

And the reward increased to $30,000 for any information on Zuzu Verk, 21, a Sul Ross State University student who has been missing since Oct. 12.

Authorities announced Wednesday that the search for Verk, a graduate of Timber Creek High School in the Keller school district, would expand to include Marathon, Marfa and Fort Davis and the counties of Jeff Davis and Presidio.

The Texas towns and counties are just a few miles from Alpine ,where Verk, a junior at Sul Ross State, went to college.

Verk was last heard from on Oct. 12, according to an Alpine Police Department news release, and is considered possibly in danger. She went on a date Tuesday night but didn’t show up to class or work Wednesday, her father, Glenn Verk, told KRLD.

Authorities have asked residents to provide any information about seeing a gray 2006 Jeep Liberty and a 2004 Mazda Miata convertible with a beige top being driven between the hours of midnight and 10:00 a.m. Oct. 12.

ALPINE POLICE ASK THAT ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON ZUZU VERK CONTACT THEM AT 432-837-3486.

Alpine police posted on Facebook that ground and air searches continued around Alpine. Representives from Texas Equusearch also were on the scene. Agencies involved in the search include the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office, Reeves County Sheriff’s Office and the Pecos County Sheriff’s Office.

Also assisting are troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Texas Forest Service.

Federal agencies helping are the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, Texas Department of Corrections, Drug Enforcement Administration and the National Park Service.
