Dead woman’s two children, roommate still missing from Round Rock

ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — Police are still looking for two girls who were last seen Sunday at noon. They say 44-year-old Terry Miles has 7-year-old Luluvioletta Mariposo Bandera-Margret and Lilianais Victoria Cake Griffith, 14. Miles is also a person of interest in a suspicious death of 44-year-old Tonya Bates at the 2300 block of Leslie Court in Round Rock.

Miles was Bates’s roommate.  Miles is not charged with any crime as of yet but Round Rock police do believe the girls are not with him “willingly.”

Neighbors on Leslie Court said Sunday night was not the first time police showed up to this home. They said officers were looking around the house two days ago before the woman was found dead inside Sunday night. Police say around 10:36 a.m. on Dec. 30, officers went to the home for a welfare check called in by Bates’ coworker. Later, around 8:30 p.m. they returned after Bates’ boyfriend was concerned she and her girls weren’t responding. Both times police did not find anything suspicious, but at some point received information that let them enter the home, where they found Bates’ body.

Detectives said Miles may be in New Mexico or Southern Colorado. Initially investigators believed he was headed to Louisiana where family friends say he used to live. That is also where he was arrested for attempted second degree murder in 2011. NBC affiliate KPLC reported he beat and strangled his then-girlfriend.

That was not the first time Miles had been charged with domestic abuse.

An investigation is pending. Miles was held on $800,000 Bail.

Terry Miles charged with kidnapping two Round Rock girls
Claire Osborn  American-Statesman Staff
1:29 p.m Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018  Local News

The U.S. attorney’s office has charged Terry Miles with kidnapping 14-year-old Lilianais Victoria Cake Griffith and 7-year-old Luluvioletta Bandera-Margaret from Round Rock, according to a news release Thursday.

Tonya Bates, was found slain in their Round Rock home over the weekend.

Police received a call to check on her welfare Saturday when she did not show up for work, the release said. Police found Bates’ body in her home and she “appeared to have suffered from blunt force trauma,” the release said. It said no one else was at the home when her body was found and that her 2017 Hyundai Accent was missing.

Investigators discovered Bates had two daughters and a roommate named Terry Miles, the release said. It said Miles’ mother received a text message at 1 a.m. Saturday from a phone that belonged to one of Bates’ daughters. Police got cell phone information on the children’s phones and found one of them in a heavily wooded area next to a Walmart store in Round Rock, the release said.

Surveillance from the store showed what appeared to be Miles buying camping-related items and then leaving in a vehicle that appeared to be Bates’ car, the release said. It did not say what day the surveillance video was taken.

Las Animas County sheriff’s deputies arrested Miles near La Veta, Colo., on Wednesday evening. He will appear at 3 p.m. Thursday in federal district court in Denver.
