It looks like this article is using information released as of the 10:30 PM press conference.  From what I saw of that press conference, they were not 100% sure that the trunk was searched.  That's why they're going to the logs.

Dogs were used. Wouldn't the dogs have scented them in the trunk if they were there at the time the car was first searched?
