Natalee's mom is biased and thinks that her "perfect" little daughter would never do anything so unladylike as to get drunk and try to pick up guys at a bar. Also Natalee's mom is placing her judgemental world view through her own narrow American perspective. she simply fails to realize how young people behave and assumes that all countries offer the same protections as her own. Natalee's mom is also a hypocrite for chastisng the boys for being 17 and drinking, yet her "perfect" little daughter was 18 and drunk !
Her mother IS entitled to her greif and outrage, but she is NOT entiteled to think the the entire world has the same "standards" of the USA. Why didnt Natalee and her class take their trip to Branson Mo. ?

Mad Listen here, RichBoy:  She is concerned about her daughter.  You don't need to be on her bashing her.  All she said, was that it was out of the ordinary for her daughter to do things like that.  Which, I'm sure that you done things in your life that your parents never would have thought that you done, too.  It was legal for the kids on the trip to drink down there, and the adults that were with them, couldn't have stopped them, if they tried.  Her family and friends do look at these sites, so please be considerate and not be bashing or critizing anyone in the family!

Well in a much less "bashing" and much more "sympathetic" way, I do sort of agree with you. I personally do not even understand how this trip happened as I DO NOT (and please don't attack me b/c you won't change my mind), believe these kids were old enough to be in a foreign country, drinking, partying and celebrating on their own. If they needed chaperones to handle "emergency problems with passports", then they weren't old enough to travel without mom and dad. Passports??

Her daughter used some very bad judgement down there (which a WHOLE COUNTRY is suffering for) and I'm sure the mom is dealing with that, just not in the public's eye, however, the way she is down there bashing everyone she comes in contact with, especially this 17yo who has YET to be convicted of a crime, makes her lose some sympathy IMO. I lost ALOT of concern for them after hearing them criticize the other parents for letting their son out late etc. Obviously your daughter is far from perfect as well, so let's hold back from insulting other people who are obviously in their own pain.

Regardless of what the kids did down there, noone deserves what happened to this girl, BUT if you're going to go public about it, I'd think you'd be more careful with what you say.

Threatening a foreign gov't to get what you want (no matter how understandable your grief is), is NOT right!

Yes, I somewhat agree with you as far as what the twitty's had to say regarding Joran and his family. I think it was Jug that said here we have a boy who gambles underage, drinks underage etc....and his father is suppose to be a professional in the judicial system. This part bothered me, like you said...they let Natalee go to a strange country, to a place I'm sure they knew she would be able to drink, yet was underage in her own country/state to do so. If that ain't calling the kettle black, i don't know.

Some of what they have said about the VDS hasn't been fair, I agree.

Your point is like comparing apples to oranges.  Natalee didn't break Aruban laws by drinking.  You have a high judicial official who breaks the law in his own country by taking a minor to drink and gamble.  If you do not see the hipocracy of this then I feel sorry for you and do understand why your country is in the situation they are in.  Until Aruba enforces its laws, you will have low standards and the reputation that goes along with it.  When you raise your children to break laws, they will manipulate the system to avoid punishment and your laws will mean nothing to them.

I think you're quite confused....if you're talking to me that is. I'm on the southern east coast. But I agree, we have enough children here being raised by their parents to think they are above the law.

And look at the Americans in Aruba...they think they are above the Aruban law to a certain degree don't they??

Rich Boy; Ting:
Natalee Holloway is an American citizen.  While on a post-graduation vacation she disappeared in Aruba.  She is a missing person, an unplanned disappearance, a victim.  Normal mothers would be concerned should their daughter not return as expected.  This is not a behavior reserved strictly for American mothers...this is true for mothers worldwide whether you are Dutch or Aruban or Surinamese.  Ask YOUR mother.

No they do not.  They have been quite patient with the Aruban legal system.  No one from MB has broken any of Aruba's laws.  Aruba is the one who has bungled it.

I totally agree with you in principle -- and thanks for the laugh when I got to the end and saw, "Branson, Mo".

It only took a couple of interviews with a couple of Natalee's family members for me to understand why Caren Janssen made that "cowboy" statement.

Personally, I've asked my mother (the mother of TWO young daughters at one time) and her reply was "I cannot really comment or understand as MY daughters would not have been in Aruba to begin with!"

I am right behind you on this. You said pretty much what I have been thinking. And ANY parent who doesn't know WHERE or WHAT HAPPENED to their child would react the same way, some of us would react even worse. ME included. Natalee was legal to be in the casinos and the bars but Joran isn't. That SHOULD not be overlooked. Also, her parents knew where she was, she was in ARUBA which is supposed to be safe.

Underage drinking and gambling really isn't the issue here. If he IS a murderer, his gambling probably had nothing to do with it, and I doubt there was much his parents could do about it either. That's a very serious personality flaw if you ask me.

She was in ARUBA....said as if "she was in the KITCHEN".  Shocked

It's a foreign country, no matter how safe you think it is. You DON'T send your children there by themselves and your children should not go running off with strangers. We know what strangers here do to kids when they find them, I'd imagine I'd have the same fear of strangers overseas too. But that's just me.

This is a very sad story that did NOT have to happen.

Is there a false sense of security?
Yes they have a low crime rate, BUT you are still
in a foreign country.
Yes it is an island, BUT you are still in a foreign
country.
To think you are SAFER in a foreign country than
your own neighbourhood seems a true sense of
false security.

My ex and I knew we weren't safe in Mexico. We
weren't! And that was 15 years ago. But we were
already married, not fresh in the world so to speak.

Like a posted before, I would NEVER send my child
to a foreign country in that genre. I would have to
be there, or we'd go as a family.

Natalee's mom never said her daughter was perfect. There are conflicting stories about whether or not Natalee was drunk. Regardless, Natalee was of legal age to drink and gample in Aruba. Joran was not.

Natalee is missing. Her mother has every right to be upset. She has been mislead, flat out lied to and must be frustrated beyond imagination.

I would venture to say she has maintained a more positive outlook and demeanor than the vast majority of people in the same situation could possibly do.

Have a bit of compassion here. Beth Twitty is devasted by her daughter's disappearance. She may be tormented by this for the rest of her life.

I don't care if Natalee was running naked and drunk through the middle of a casino, which she was NOT doing, it wouldn't make what has happened to her any less wrong. It wouldn't make it any less horrible for her family.

I hope that you never find yourself in Beth Twitty's situation. I hope that no one does. This is every parent's worst nightmare.

Can we not cut them some slack??
