NOTE:  SUMMARY AS OF 1/9/2007 IS ON PAGE 16

http://tinyurl.com/y872v3

.
The purpose of this thread will be to list documented murders and violent crimes in Aruba.  Eventually it would be helpful to compare and contrast this with the "official" version given by authorities and especially the tourism industries to determine accuracy of information.

Comparing events reported in local Aruban newspapers and other sources on the island will give a better picture than statements made for the benefit of enhancing tourism.

Please list any known murders or crimes of violence that you have as well as the date and a source if possible.

Thank you in advance for any participation in this collection of data.

Recently there was an article published in USA Today where an alleged expert on travel, speaking to a group of travel agents claimed that there had been only one murder in Aruba in the last twenty years.  We know this is not true as at one time we had about a dozen listed on a thread similar to this one.

Here is information including contact information concerning that article:

Here is the address of the man who wrote the article stating that there had only been one murder in Aruba in the past twenty years for USAToday

travel@davidgrossman.net

Here is his address at the paper.  You put Grossman in the subject line to see that it is directed to him:

travel@usatoday.com <travel@usatoday.com>.

This is a link to an article in USAToday and this Grossman who wrote it says that Aruba has had one murder in the last twenty years. I have already written to him protesting that statement but the horror of it is he made it apparently speaking to a group of travel agents!!

Please write to Mr Grossman if you feel so inclined and request that he correct this horrific disinformation. Here is the article and his email address is at the bottom of the article.

http://tinyurl.com/mg6ju

Justinsmama found this:

This what Grossman at USA Today wrote:

Quote:
Many people say they feel safe when traveling. But our sense of "safe" is often distorted by media coverage (or the lack of it) and distance, according to Tarlow. For example, the disappearance of Natalee Holloway gained worldwide attention and caused a decline in visitors to Aruba, even though it is the safest island in the Caribbean with only one murder reported in the last 20 years.

To report corrections and clarifications, contact Reader Editor Brent Jones at 1-800-872-7073 or e-mail accuracy@usatoday.com

So here we can have all the contact infomation at one place although you can go to the USATODAY website and write to the travel editor who is also the boss of this Grossman who write one murder in the last twenty years in Aruba and tells that to a group of travel

Subsequent to being questioned on this absurd statistic, Mr David Grossman of USAToday travel department did contact me and at least one other poster, MSMarple via email and state that he could only substantiate a couple of murders in Aruba per year.  Thus he concluded based on per capita, one stood twice the chances of being murdered in the U.S. than in Aruba.

I have sent him a listing of several murders over the past few months and received not response.

One has to be actually looking to be able to substantiate much of anything and I have to wonder if that is the case in his inability to find more than a couple of murders per year.  I will try to assist in his endeavor.

SUNFREAK2 submitted the following list of murders:

>>
Other Deaths on Aruba:

Robert Wayne Benson, 56 year old American Harley Davidson mechanic, found locked in a storage container behind the shop in Cura Cabay where he worked on 11-16-05. Death was ruled a suicide by Dr. van der Linden who performed the autopsy.

RENE MICHEL VAN HEYNINGEN – partially decapitated man found at cemetery on 6-18-05

Dinesh ‘Pitbull’ Djoegan, the 25 year old bouncer from Choose a Name Bar that was found on 4-5-06 in Guadirikiri cave. His body was mutilated, crucified, and set on fire.

Margarita Nedd-Panaqua, 35, from the Dominican Republic. She was stabbed by a jealous boyfriend on 11-4-05
.
Galyson Lucas Winster, a 27 year old choller. was shot in the head on 11-4-05.

And this from LESLIE:

Another murder in Aruba:
Raul Croes - attacked in a restaurant with a machete
see Solo di Pueblo April 18, 2006 edition (available online)

Gee, you don't suppose there were any tourists in that restaurant do you?  Could have been dangerous for them. Like the armed hold-up of one of the casinos in the last few years was as well.

Counting Benson a suicide, this is five murders.  Natalee Holloway would make the sixth bring Aruba ahead of the US according to Mr Grossman's method of calculating per capita murders.

Please add more as you are able to find them.

KvK wants to put an end to deterioration of the center

ARUBA – In an open letter to the government, the committee of the Chamber of Commerce (KvK) expressed her concern about the deterioration of the center of Oranjestad.  They urge the government to discuss the establishment of a policy to tackle all the problems with all the parties involved.  “If this does not happen carefully, and without knowledge, it’s going to hurt the Aruban community financially and more”, warns KvK.

The recently demolishing of a building that was being used by drug addicts and all the following violence against the different businesses in Oranjestad is an indication of short-sighted policy, says KvK.  “The consequences for the businesses in the inner city and for the safety of the individual residents and visitors are not being considered.”  It’s not just about drug addicts, but also problems with the traffic, lack of parking spaces, criminality, littering, deterioration of the buildings, and uncertainty about the business licensing policy for new businesses.

The problems are not just the responsibility of the ministry of Justice, but also of the ministry of Economic Affairs, Tourism, and Infrastructure and Planning.  They do not show enough attention and interest.

Putting the shelter for drug addicts in the center of Oranjestad didn’t solve the problem; on the contrary, the problems have become bigger and had caused the economy more damage.  KvK urges the government to revise the policy soon and to move the shelter to somewhere else.

The business life in the center demands the authorities to provide them and the public with around the clock protection.  “The tax payers have the right to that.”

KvK is willing to render full assistance to the improvement of the situation in the center of Oranjestad.  “Some of the responsibilities are exclusively the government’s though.  It’s about time that the government gives clarity on her intentions with the center of Oranjestad.”

Let us not forget the strange incident of the body that was dug up before the Holloway searchers found it. (The Aruba-Bay video of body recovery.)

This was called an "old body" and not related to the Holloway case. How did the polis know where the body was? Why wasn't it in a cemetery? Where is it now?

From SunFreak's timeline:

June 10 – Aru-Bay video of what appears to be the recovery of a body is filmed. It is later claimed to be that of a 7 year old illegal immigrant from Columbia, although the body is later reported to have been found a year earlier

This is the "strange incident" mentioned in previous post. Wanted to get the date in.

Woman found in trash - Reported by Bondia 6/23/2006

There is an article on the front page of Bondia from 6/23/2006 regarding a body that was found - WARNING GRAPHIC PHOTO.

http://www.cspnv.com/archivo/pdf/23/A-23-06-2006.pdf

It's about the body of a woman in advance state of decomposition. No clothing on her, but some clothing articles are scattered around her. Appears she had worn some type of bracelet, possibly one of the "drink pass" rubber/plastic bracelets. (Or may have been ligature mark?)

Posted just to get the date in. Bondia page no longer available.

Diario article on 6/24/2006

diario article writes its lamentable and sad to have to report what has occurred. Usually these things have been known to apppen in los angeles or in cancun but never here in aruba!
to report that false police are going around gives aruba a very bad name in light of the tragic circumstances that has already occurred with the natalie case.
A man speaking spanish and dressed in police blues stopped in front of a american tourist enjoying the brreze on the beach and told her she owed 500 for a fine. It does not say what the fine was for . In a Nutshell when the tourist said she was not aware of commitiing anything she could be fined for as she had just arrived not only was she unaware of what crime was committed to incur that fine.
the blue uniformed polis then spoke with someone on his cell phone, she believed him to be asking something about the fines to whomever he was tlking to. He then said to her ok if you preform a sexual act in front of me we can then forget the fine ,but you must do this. the tourist ran to the hotel desk and asked for help in reporting what occured. while the desk person took down identification of guests and locals the woman also called the consulate to report the icident.
This put our polis and tourism in poor light and can only be useful in hamperin tourism.

Not a word to word translation but pretty much it in a nutshell.

Innocent 16 yr old female raped by man and then by schoolmates:
word has come to the paper that a group of males student aged from the same school as the victem had been loitering around .

this crime is considered to be punishable and condemming by law.
thee innocent 16 yr old Virgen was accosted by many from within her own class and school.
This was a forced act of violence agaisnt this child and she was raped anally and vaginally.
What makes this crime more sickening is that many of the male students used thier cameras on thier cellphones to record the act.
By midday the photos were circulated to other males via cellphones.
The family of the girl wishing to protect her is not wanting to go to the polis in order to protect her identity further and prevent her from bieng marked as a raped female within the community. She has been thru a horrific ordeal and they dont wish to upset her more. They will seek professional help for her but are fearing to go to the polis.
the photos continue to be distributed via MMS now more than ever diario has found out.
The family upon learning this has decided the girl will not return to school in august and instead they are looking to send her off the island with other family abroad.
Diario is supplicating to the family to protect the girl and press charges annonymously so that these group will not get away with this crime so that they may be brought to justice and not have a chance to do this to another female.
The author of the article states he cannot believe what is happening to the islands youth today. He says the goverment and the judicial branches of Arube must take a firm stance against this behavior, and prosecute these thugs.
In another case he sites that a roaming group of youngsters have terrorised an entire area in Cas Palamos. In that case polis did nothing to disband this disruptive group of young males.
In yet another case last night polis did stop a group of youngsters who were out of control after leaving a concert for the band called of the highway in area of Boegoereio. while awaiting the arrival of more polis to the scene the youths scattered in different direction.
Diario is asking that the photos circulating in JPG form via MMs cellul;ar co be removed from airwaves. If not they risk falling as accomplices to the actions of these rapists.

Best ranslation I could do. Sandy

High Command in Holland wants to conduct DNA tests on all suicide victims
DIARIO Aruba
1/6/2006

ORANJESTAD (AAN): A report which is circulating in Holland caught DIARIO’s attention, related to a declaration from the High Command of the police in Utrecht. Among other things, it is mentioned that with suicide cases, it is desired for all these cases, that DNA tests be conducted on the bodies.

Two unsolved cases were illustrated, in the first instance the victim committed suicide but it resulted later after the test, that this was not the case.

It is desired to introduce a law so that in this type of case, DNA tests can take place. What the High Command brought forward is based on a case of more or less 20 years which is considered a cold case after the test resulted in something else.

Recently in Aruba, also in past years, experts from Holland along with investigators and authorities in Paradera opened a cemetery in which the Dutch man Maas, who was owner of a pet shop here in Aruba in the Andina Ice building, was buried.

At this time, the doctor could not determine what caused Maas’s death. It has been suspected for some time that the man was poisoned. But the prosecutor ordered a DNA test be conducted on the corpse.

Now there is a result which indicated that a crime took place, this opened the way to hear suspects. One of the suspects in this case is the wife of the deceased who is a Canadian woman and who at the moment lives in Canada.

It is not known if the Public Prosecutor in this case, the Attorney General, proposed to the government of Aruba or the Kingdom to solicit the extradition of the woman whose initials are M.J.H. of 47 years of age. It is also not known if the Kingdom in these cases has a treaty. Meanwhile, this could last many months, or perhaps light will never be shed on this case.

Amigoe June 8 2006 article re. Pitbull:

ARUBA — Dinesh ‘Pitbull’ Djoegan had died of overdoses cocaine.  At this moment, the Public Prosecutor (OM) does not have evidence that the 25-year old man that was found dead in the vicinity of the Guadirikiri cave on April 5th was murdered.  Four suspects have been arrested and the examining magistrate has prolonged the custody of one of them with 8 days.

On Tuesday, Pitbull’s widow and her mother had talked with the district attorney, who leads the investigation on the death of Djoegan.  The OM does not comment on the contents of this conversation.  All they said was that in order to determine the cause of death, they had to send tests to the Netherlands.  The family was informed that Pitbull was not murdered, but had an amount of cocaine in his body.  There is a possibility that he was forced to take the drug. The OM is also investigating the relation between the cause of death and the fact that Djoegan was found burned and crucified.

Last weekend, the police arrested two men and two women in connection with this case.  One of them, M.L. was taken before the examining magistrate on Tuesday afternoon.  He was already in prison for illegal possession of firearms and cocaine balls.

Article on Rastaman murder 5/31/05

Prosecutor asks for 10 years of punishment for rastaman who has said that he didn’t have the intention to kill the person
http://www.diarioaruba.com/diasabra/noticia/news4.html

ORANJESTAD(AAN): The case of C.E.B., who is accused of intentionally taking someone’s life, took place in court on Friday. This happened on May 31, 2005, where a problem arose on the beach, where a Rastafarian man stabbed a person, with fatal consequences.

The accused, C.E.B. admitted that it was he who stabbed the person, however he explained that he went to defend his friend V. His friend lives on the street and another person who lives on the street J. was looking for trouble with him and took away his license plate [placa?]

When C. and V. ran into J. on the street, C. asked J. how he could take advantage of V. According to C. the the person attacked and they started to fight.

When J. was down, J’s friends were saying “stab him”. That is when J. took out a knife and the rastaman (C.) took the arm away from him. The rasta continued to say that they fell on top of each other and after a while he noticed that he had stabbed the person.

He took off his shirt that was soaked with the victim’s blood and walked away. Afterwards, someone came to say that J. had died. After the witness’s declaration, the rasta was detained.

The judge said to the court that there was a witness who declared that they say the rasta standing behind J. and saw that it was in this way that he stabbed [the victim]. According to the prosecutor, the fact that the victim had cuts on his chest [y su banda robez], it couldn’t be that the person fell on top of the rasta and in that way suffered the mortal wound.

According to the prosecutor, C. perhaps stood in front of him, when he stabbed him twice. The rastaman explained to the judge however, that if it were true that he stabbed the person in the way that the prosecutor said, he wouldn’t have had so much blood on his body.

It was said that before J was stabbed he fought back, for this reason there was so much of the victim’s blood on his clothes and body. The prosecutor asked C. about an event that in the past where he was punished for stabbing a person and that it was known that he always carried a knife.

C. explained about this that he was attacked by someone with a pipe and that he defended himself. He also said that at the time he had a knife, because he used [base?] , using a plastic pipe and he needed a knife.

C. explained to the judge that all people who use base with a plastic pipe, have a knife. Now that he uses a metal pipe, he doesn’t carry a knife anymore. According to the judge, in the police report, C. himself stated that he had a knife and that he stabbed the victim with it.

According to C. the police report isn’t correct, since the knife belonged to the victim. The prosecutor asked for an unconditional punishment of 10 years, less time served.
