MsMarple,
Your recently posted response to yet another travel writer ignoring crime in Aruba is excellent and I think should be added here.

After all, it was the claim of just two such travel writers that inspired us to start this thread in the first place, their claim of one murder in Aruba in the last twenty years when we knew full well we were seeing murders with alarming frequencies in the Aruban newspapers.

And I do note with the exception of these giddy travel writers, Aruba no longer seems to make that ridiculous claim of being totally crime free.  Like many of the other islands, they now admit that tourists should exercise caution.  Too bad they were not far more honest about this before Natalee Holloway disappeared with not a trace ever being reported as having been found.

Had they done so, it's likely that particular group would never have chosen Aruba as its destination for their graduation trip.  But then, that was the point in withholding the information concerning Aruba's high crime rate.

So please post that here if you feel so inclined.  It isn't about a particular crime but it does apply in that it shows the travel writers are still portraying Aruba as safe when in fact it is far more dangerous than many areas and has a murder rate at least as high, and most of the time we have checked, higher than that of the U.S. and the crimes usually happen in or around the tourist sectors.

I posted this on the LCD Friday 04/06/2007:

Quote
OMG! No wonder Diario has been looking/acting different these last couple of days ...

http://www.amigoe.com/english/

Diario turns to Queen

ORANJESTAD – In an open letter, staff and management of the morning paper Diario have asked the Queen’s attention for the commercial boycott called by the MEP and her leader, Prime Minister Nelson Oduber.

MEP demanded the owner and also director and chief editor Jossy Mansur to publicly apologize to MEP and premier Oduber for all the articles he has published with the intention to damage the reputation of the government and MEP. Mansur has till last Monday to do this, otherwise, the MEP will announce a boycott against Diario.

Since Mansur ignored MEP’s ultimatum, the party decided on a total boycott of the newspaper. No information must be given to Diario. MEP-member had to cancel their subscription as per immediate.. They are also not allowed to buy the paper separately. They cannot place ads in the Diario.

That’s the reason for Diario’s letter to the Queen. He expressed his concern in this letter and asks the Queen to ‘safeguard our constitutional rights’.

Clay Pigeon posted the link to this on the FP, in comments re. the Boycott Diario story. I believe this is at Easy's web site. These are Jossy's comments.

I have spaced some lines differently, to make a list ...

"The MEP party is a party of delinquents and promotes delinquency (a Minister (Ramon Lee) who raped a woman, was accused by her to the Police, and was never even questioned!

Another Minister (Rudy Croes)who brought in young girls from Santo Domingo and wanted to force them into prostitution with him and his friends;

another Minister (Nilo Swaen) who was accused by his own department head of manipulating figures to make the government look good;

another Minister (Rudy Croes again) whose departments sold permits to foreigners, and under whom driver's licenses were also being sold;

another Minister (the Prime Minister Nelson Oduber) who is a habitual liar and will stop at nothing to carry out his Chavez-inclined plans for Aruba;

members of Parliament of the MEP party who were caught by the police in drunken driving (Junior Arends)

and hit and run (Robert Maduro);

and so much more delinquency and violations of our laws it would take an encyclopedia to hold them! THESE ARE ALL PROVEN FACTS! not lies or inventions made up to slander them. They are a group of the most corrupt public figures ever to participate in Aruban politics. Just go over the Holloway case, and now the Michael Saladin case, and you immediately know the anti-American sentiments of those now in power in Aruba.

To answer the stupid allegations in that MEP inspired and promoted piece of garbage:

1. I never funded any party in Aruba, much less the one Glenbert Croes started because Nelson Oduber, the actual Prime Minister, forbade him to participate in the party his father (Betico) founded. He was so disgusted with that prohibition that he decided, with a few friends his age, to start his own party called the OLA. This is another FACT! When you make this kind of allegation, you better have the necessary proofs (documents, transfer of money, etc.) to back up your allegation. In this case it is non-existent! Just another lie propagated by the corrupt officials who have now been discovered in the biggest of their foul deeds!

Do you remember the Holloway case and the flagrant cover-up that is going on? Well, this party will stop at nothing to slander and invent things that do not exist, or to harm Americans or American interests on the island).

2. The manifestations in front of the Government building in the past were about to get seriously out of hand by the violence inspired by the MEP party fanatics (car burning, invasion and destruction of government property, etc.) that I did meet with one labor leader to put sense into his head. That is another FACT impossible to deny!

3. I never met and have nothing to do with the Namdar group. Ask the FBI to interrogate Richad Lacle, who will soon be serving a prison sentence in Florida, to find out who is behind this group that offered a big bribe to Nelson Odbuer's party and was never denounced to the police or the prosecutors in Aruba. My attention was brought to this case by the revelation of a letter containing a bribery of 1 million guilders to Nelson Oduber and his party. The man to whom the letter was addressed is Michael Williams, ex-campaigner for the MEP party, and who is now in Holland in contact with the Dutch authorities. Williams stated unequivocally that he gave the original to Marisol Tromp (another MEP Minister), to Frerdis Refunjol, actual Governor in Aruba, and to Nelson Oduber (Prime Minister) and Edison Briezen (Minister of Tourism). None of these ever denounced the offered bribery to the authorities! This case is far from having reached the end. It is now beginning on an international level. I wouldn't be surprised if in the U.S., Effy Namdar will be arrested and interrogated with regards to this offered bribe. It's his signature that appears in the bribery letter! U.S. Laws strictly forbid this kind of commercial outright purchase of local and foreign officials in Government, regardless of how easy it is to buy the officials now in power!

4. When the previous government (AVP) was way off track, it was I and the DIARIO who confronted it and brought its government down. Not the MEP party, because they didn't have the credibility to convince anyone that they could do better. They lied their way through the campaign and were able to win with the DIARIO's help. I do not cater to any party in government or to any government! That too is a proven FACT.

5. There is no set up in this case, only the TRUTH! And it came out with a signed letter by Effy Namdar with a one million guilder bribery offer to the MEP party for the purchase of 100 acres of prime land at the port. Can you imagine the corruption involved here? And whether Nel Oduber, the habitual liar and head of the most corrupt government ever in Aruba, likes it or not, the DIARIO will do whatever it takes to stop the sale of public property against the offered 1 million guilders in the form BRIBERY!"

Meant to say - I really wanted to post the above, because we have not had the benefit of translations of so many of these things we've been reading in Diario. It is good to have the clarification.

Arriba Aruba!
Get on a plane and take that vacation

by donna m. airoldi / metro new york

APR 4, 2007

ARUBA. Overworked? Burned out? Or simply want to jump-start your summer tan? Why not head to Aruba, one of the Caribbean’s most accessible islands.

My fiancé and I were in need of some serious warm-weather rejuvenation recently and the myriad flights to the Queen Beatrix International Airport — enhanced by JetBlue Airways’ daily service launched from John F. Kennedy International Airport last year — made Aruba an easy choice.

On the drive from the airport, we spotted iguanas lounging on the trunks of the island’s iconic divi-divi trees, which are sculpted into graceful bending shapes by Aruba’s constant trade winds. The beautiful stretches of beach, piercing turquoise waters and gorgeous orange sunset assured us we were on our way to renewal.

Located just 15 miles off the coast of South America, this former Dutch colony isn’t your typical island paradise: Much of its 70 square miles is desert, with cacti, rock formations and sand dunes. The north and east coasts are stunning, but rugged and hammered by rough waters. De Palm Tours (depalm.com), the island’s main tour company, offers a 4x4 jeep safari to this side that includes stops at the Chapel of Alto Vista, Aruba’s first church, and the remains of abandoned gold mines. (The name Aruba comes from oro ruba, which means “red gold.”)

Visitors seeking typical sun and sand activities should stick to Aruba’s western coast. The island’s winds make parasailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing popular, while snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts can explore numerous coral reefs and ship wrecks. During our Pelican Adventures (pelican-aruba.com) snorkeling excursion, which offered lunch and unlimited beverages (such as refreshing rum punches), we saw a wide variety of marine life, including a small octopus.

Aruba got a bad rap after Natalee Holloway went missing in 2005, but those who know Aruba know the island is safe — and more than $250 million has been invested into its tourism industry, according to the Aruba Tourism Authority, with many hotel renovations wrapping up in recent months.

We stayed at the Westin Aruba Resort (westin.com/aruba), which debuted in December after completing phase one of a multimillion dollar upgrade of the former Wyndham hotel. Each guestroom boasts private balconies with ocean views and the aptly named Westin Heavenly Bed.

The resort sits on the south end of Palm Beach, arguably the best stretch, being cleaner, softer and less rocky than the rest. Anchoring the opposite end is the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino (arubamarriott.com), which recently expanded its casino and also renovated rooms. Between the two properties are more than a dozen other hotels — such as the surprisingly attractive Holiday Inn Sunspree Aruba (aruba.sunspreeresorts.com) and the Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort & Casino (aruba.hyatt.com).

The Radisson Aruba Resort & Casino opened its luxurious Larimar Spa (larimarspaaruba.com) in February. The 80-minute Aloe Vera and Rum Massage, the spa’s signature treatment, costs $175. My thoroughly enjoyable, 60-minute Relaxing Massage at the Westin’s Intermezzo Day Spa was a comparative bargain at $75.

Happy hours abound in the beach bars, where drinks often cost no more than $3 or $4 during the early evening. For continued beverage bargains, hit the numerous hotel casinos. Be warned that beer comes in small bottles. Better for it to remain cold, locals say.

Meals, on the other hand, are more costly, but the food is terrific. Moist conch fritters and savory coconut shrimp appetizers at the over-water Pelican Nest Bar & Seafood Grill will set you back $8.25 and $16.50, respectively. Restaurants at the Westin were excellent, particularly its Pago Pago Steakhouse and the outdoor Azul, where guests dine barefoot beachside.

Our dining highlight was at Le Dôme Restaurant (ledome-aruba.com), located near Eagle Beach and specializing in Belgian-French cuisine. The Dover sole melted in our mouths, and if you’re a fan of offal, the sweetbreads are not to be missed.

We packed in a lot, but didn’t get to it all. Luckily JetBlue adds another direct flight out of JFK May 1.

Aruba travel

- As of January, passports are required for U.S. citizens, who upon their return go through customs in Aruba rather than in the United States.

- The equator is just 11 miles south, so strong sunscreen (the locally produced Aruba Aloe is recommended) and hats are a must.

- Aruba is south of the hurricane belt — the last tropical storm classified as such that passed near the island was in 1877 — making it a safe bet for vacations year-round.

- The local currency is the Aruba florin, though U.S. dollars are widely accepted, and ATMs give the option of receiving either.

Here is my response:

"Aruba got a bad rap after Natalee Holloway went missing in 2005" for a good reason - not only is she still "missing," but Aruba's government and business officials went to great lengths to avoid prosecution of the the Holloway case.

They also went to amazing lengths to officially and systematically trash the victim and her family.

Aruba is "safe" compared to what? Despite what you travel writers have been told, Aruba's homicide rate in recent years is at least twice, possibly three times, the U.S. rate.

I don't have a "blog" but for more information about Murder & Crime on Aruba, go here:
http://tinyurl.com/wjjsz

Ms. Airoldi, if YOU or a relative or close friend vanished from Aruba, and the case was handled in a like manner, dismissive comments such as yours would rub very raw indeed.

And yes, I believe Natalee is dead, and Aruba would do anything rather than prosecute the fair-haired child of one of its leading Dutch citizens.

I don't know any of Ms. Holloway's family, but I raised two daughters and have two granddaughters. I can only think, "There but for the grace of God ... "

I do give permission to publish this, but please do not include my name or any other personal information. There is a very hateful anti-Holloway community out there. Many of them are computer savy, and hacking is the least of the problems they have created. If you would like to see some of that in action, look up Refugees Unleashed or Freedom of Blog.

Thank you.

Dana had Jossy Mansur on his program 04/09/2007, and Jossy discussed the MEP boycott of Diario, as well as answering some other questions.

Angie911Dispatcher transcribed these parts - these are excerpts (Thanks Angie!):

Quote
Jossy said you never know if they have to be concened for their saftey for him or his staff.. he watched out for that. You never know?

Diaro wont be silenced Jossy said. Wants to know who got the money and when.
Jossy said anything in Aruba.. anything can happen.

Jossy said he will not be shut up.. exposes corruption.. and when govt is exposed. they want to shut them up.

JOssy was told to keep quiet and not give interviews. The truth the way they see it needs to be silenced. Jossy said he will never do it.

How can we listeners help with this.
Jossy said Write to Miama.. Press association? (I cant understand him that well)
Jossy said this kind of dictatorship attiutde wont be tolerated

Dana asked about the 17 yr old boy that was missing..
Jossy said this boy ran away from home.. to St Nikolas.
Boy is back home now.

Why was greg Kelly killed in Holland?
fight broke out while drinking in bar.. no additional news to that.
From police in Holland case is closed

Dana asking about Max Devries

Jossy knows very little. His name doesn't appear in the computers or police recrods now?

And Lala'sMom caught these parts (Thanks Lalas!):

Quote
Jossy said that the problem is more than just the Holloway case. He said he was told to keep quite and not say anything. Wants the govt to look good.

Jossy says there is a strong tie with Chavez and the MEP. He says people are seen travelling to Venezuela. Emphasizes strong ties with the Chavez govt.

He is going to investigate the bribery and who got the money. Says you have to go after the people that got the bribe.

Wever that was identifying himself as a minister in Aruba, got a large sum of money and bought his freedom.

Corruption in Aruba...Jossy says that he hasn't heard much on Holloway case. Has a man in Holland trying to talk with the people that took the Holloway documents about the Holloway case with them. He has a man there.

klaas posted this on LCD 04/16/2007. A searing editorial from Jossy in Diario. Emphasis added.

Quote
Diario editorial 4/16/07 translated by Jossy from Easy's blog (thanks Easy):

Quote
A TRAITOR AND HIS ANTI-ARUBAN GOVERNMENT (2)

The truth can hurt when it’s exposed without circumlocution! What could have led the mediocrity of the MEP party to lose their heads in such an ugly manner? Could it be the bribery of 1 million guilders? Is that what made them try to look for any distraction from this most shameful anti-Aruban act known in our history? Is it because Nel Oduber is searching for a way out of the atom-bomb that the Namdar offer exploded in his face, and that has converted Neldar into another victim that “can be bought and sold?"

Gentlemen, go ahead with your attempts to distract the attention from the offered bribery of the most shameful 1 million guilders that exists, and the delivery afterwards of our port to the same foreign group that put that money under the table! Is this or isn’t this the greatest demonstration of anti-Arubanism known until now? Must the Aruban continue on the path of the cross to get his rights, while the foreigners with money can just wave a few bills in their faces to at once get the permits or properties they want? Just consider all the cases that the most anti-Aruban government has lost in court so far! Two great doctors, real Arubans, Lacle and Posner, had to take the path of the cross to get their rights, and even so, are being politically persecuted until this day! Is this, or isn’t this one more demonstration of the most pathetic anti-Arubanism that exists?

Then Henny Eman and Otmar Oduber, another two Arubans with a long history of political persecution coming from the same Government and members of the MEP party, hungry for vengeance, moved by hate and rancor. They too had to suffer years of political persecution, to finally obtain in Court for the truth to conquer the lies, the slanders, the ridiculous accusations, thrown at them by a Government that has characterized itself as mediocre and totally anti-Aruban!

And we could go on and on to fill this whole paper with the long list of politically persecuted Arubans, just because they think different and want the good of their people and their island. To expose the truth in a newspaper, on the radio or on television, has become for the anti-Arubans in power the cause for unbelievable hysterics, a drowning in a glass of water, and an attempt to hide the bribery offer of 1 million guilders with shouts coming from the handful of mediocrities at their disposal. Mister Neldar can turn and turn, trying to find any motive that can help him extract himself, but the 1 million guilders hang over his head like the accusation of a judge.

The day I said that Nel Oduber’s government is anti American too, I came with the proofs to demonstrate it, but I left out a couple very painful for Nel, but since he again lost control over his tongue, here are more proofs: Natalee Holloway (American) and the American girl that his son mistreated and then wanted to rape in his own home! The father, a man from Panama, sent me all the proofs, including clinical reports of physical abuse, and I didn’t publish them for discretion’s sake and for consideration of a person that does not deserve it.

What did Nel’s government do in the case of Natalee? Hide their heads in a hole like ostriches so as not to see the truth of what was happening, try to fire Jan and Karin because they did not belong to the group of political yes-men of his government; put the interest for American tourism money above the value of a human life; try to throw the blame on the family of the girl that disappeared, instead of going all-out against the three suspects who are responsible for the bad name Aruba got in other countries, and rightly so because those in power did not lift one finger to defend the victim, but went all out behind the curtain to make the family responsible for the negative image Aruba got, and not against the three suspects in whose company the girl disappeared. She too is an American!

Then his unbelievably stupid anti-American statements; the case of his own son who tried to rape an American girl in his own home! Now there is another American arrested because he pulled a gun against a person that attacked his wife, then committed destruction against her property. A government that has characterized itself as an Anti-American one with unquestionable concrete proofs.

But, the worst is that this government is principally an Anti-Aruban one that obliges the sons of this island that do not belong to the privileged few of the MEP, to go through a truly torturous process to find their rights! For the foreigner with money? Everything! All they have to do is…let everyone complete the sentence for himself or herself, considering the bribery offer. And for the poor foreigners who come to Aruba with his or her work specialization, another road of the cross! A merciless persecution; an extraction of the little money that they have or can borrow, to obtain the papers for a permit that often never comes! Another inhuman persecution of those that did not come to commit acts against the law (like those that many of the delinquents around Nel did commit, some with judge’s sentences hanging over their heads!), but who came to Aruba to look for a better life and to contribute to our labor market with their talents and know-hows!

Nel Oduber has become a synonym for political persecution, for implacable hatred, for “can be bought and sold”, of 1 million guilders offered to a traitor willing to deliver our port in the hands of foreigners! This is a handing-over of the worst kind, of a dictatorial attitude never before seen on an island that always held its impeccable democracy in front of the eyes of the world for it to understand that in Aruba the empire of the Law is in command. We can no longer say that! Now our island has become, in the hands of Nel Oduber and his anti Aruban and anti-American government, an island of the abuse of power, of nepotism, of favors to the small group of privileged MEP fanatics, and political persecution against the rest of the population that do not subject themselves to his amens!

MsMarple,
I hope we can get a translation on those two articles especially as to the location that these crimes happened.  Usually it is in the tourism sector or at least restaurants or bars where tourists could well venture.

Thanks for the good find and perhaps Sandy L will appear and translate for us.

Just wanted to post this; the CIA factbook on Aruba has revised its estimated population of Aruba. Previously it was 70,000+ (don't recall exact figure).

Quote
100,018
note: estimate based on a revision of the base population, fertility, and mortality numbers, as well as a revision of 1985-1999 migration estimates from outmigration to inmigration, which is assumed to continue into the future; the new results are consistent with the 2000 census (July 2007 est.)

I mention this here because the "murder rate" we are using (the FBI stats) uses population blocks of 50,000 ...

We have compared Aruba's murder numbers with U.S. cities of comparable population - 50,000 to 99,999 people.

Guess we'll deal with it when we get the new FBI stats for 2006.

Yes, that will just barely put them into the 100,000 range which will give a slight advantage for comparison but surely that high rate of theirs will not be maintained and steps will be taken to reduce all that crime and especially against the tourists.  Those room invasions are not something a resort area can tolerate for very long.

Natalee Holloway is Not Aruba's Only Crime Problem

By Jim Kouri
Aug 10, 2005

When Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway went missing in Aruba, America and the world began to take a close look at the island.  The way they have handled the Natalee Holloway case has put the tiny islands’ police department and courts under a high powered microscope.  But if you think the disappearance of Natalee Holloway is Aruba’s only problem when it comes to the issues of crime, think again.

Located only 20 miles off the coast of Venezuela,  the island paradise of Aruba serves as a transshipment point for illicit drugs—primarily cocaine from South America. Smugglers generally move large loads of cocaine into Aruba on fishing vessels, private yachts, and go-fast boats. They also move drugs out of Aruba inside maritime containerized cargo and airfreight. Drug trafficking organizations continue to exploit Aruba’s air and sea links to the continental United States, South America, Europe, Puerto Rico, and other Caribbean nations. Most of the cocaine transiting Aruba is destined for European markets—primarily the Netherlands.

Aruba has large free-zone facilities (areas that allow goods to be held and then re-shipped elsewhere without paying an import or duty tax), which provide opportunities for bulk shipments of cocaine to transit the area without the scrutiny of local officials. Cocaine shipments in containerized cargo increasingly are transiting the area, specifically through the free zone. The free-zone facilities on Aruba are conducive to transshipments, not only of drugs, but also chemicals used in illicit manufacture of drugs. Some firms in the free zone are suspected of involvement in money laundering.

Couriers on commercial flights and cruise ships smuggle small (usually from 1- to 10-kilogram) amounts of cocaine and, to a lesser extent, heroin, into and out of Aruba, either concealed in their luggage or taped to their bodies. Commercial air couriers, sometimes swallow up to 1 kilogram of cocaine or heroin per trip. Drug couriers easily blend into the hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit Aruba each year.

The proximity of Aruba to South America, a high standard of living in Aruba, and an underdeveloped law enforcement infrastructure make the country an attractive meeting place for South American, European, and U.S. drug traffickers. Colombian traffickers play a major role in the shipments of cocaine and heroin that transit the island, having forged trafficking relationships with local Arubans. In the past, some airline employees and cruise-ship personnel have smuggled drugs through Aruba.

Aruba plays a significant role as an offshore center for drug-related money laundering. Money laundering organizations are well established on Aruba and enjoy protection from considerable bank secrecy laws and a stable currency. The organizations use Aruba’s offshore banking and incorporation systems, free-zone areas, and resort/casino complexes to transfer and to launder drug proceeds. Although money laundering was made illegal in 1999, the legislation requires a provable underlying crime with a penalty of at least 4 years. The Government of Aruba also has an asset-seizure law that allows for seizure at the time of arrest to prevent criminals from moving assets prior to conviction.

The Government of Aruba has recently issued several decrees on money laundering that include increased oversight of casinos and insurance companies. The Government of Aruba also is in the process of instituting reporting requirements for cross-border currency movements in excess of 20,000 Aruban florins (approximately US$11,200). Aruba has a Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), known as the Meldpunt Ongebruikelijke Transacties (MOT), and is a member of the Egmont Group, an international group of FIUs.

Aruba is not a source country for any of the chemicals used in illicit drug production and has no specific legislation controlling essential chemicals. Difficulties abound when attempting to gauge the levels of chemical transshipment through Aruba, as most chemicals legally pass through Aruba’s Free Trade Zone—an area in which local law enforcement has limited oversight due to local regulations and manpower shortages. The reporting of chemicals transiting the island is strictly voluntary.

The Aruba Organized Crime Unit, a small investigative team of the Aruba Police, or Politie, has responsibility for investigating large-scale drug trafficking crimes. The Coast Guard of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba (CGNAA) is responsible for maritime drug interdictions around Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles. The Governments of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba have agreed to work more closely with the other coast guards operating in the region in order to present a united front against drug trafficking. The CGNAA has its own Criminal Intelligence Division (CID) which is separate from the Politie. However, due to Dutch law, unless the CGNAA can demonstrate that a given vessel is either coming from or going to territorial waters of the Netherlands Antilles or Aruba, any drug law enforcement, other than an administrative boarding, is considered illegal. Dutch investigators also support law enforcement investigations in the Netherlands Antilles.

Cocaine, heroin, and marijuana are readily available in Aruba. Wholesale amounts of cocaine sell for from US$3,800 to US$4,500 per kilogram among drug traffickers; heroin sells for about US$23,000 per kilogram; and marijuana sells for about US$2,000 per kilogram. These low prices suggest a heavy flow of drugs into Aruba. According to Aruban statistics, an estimated 14 percent of Arubans regularly use illicit drugs.

Aruba serves as one of two forward operating locations (FOLs) in the Caribbean for U.S. counterdrug aircraft. The FOL, located at Queen Beatrix Airport near Oranjestad, provides a landing and servicing area for counterdrug detection and monitoring missions in the region. The United States and Aruba do not have a formal maritime law enforcement agreement.

Nice protest photo on Amigoe Dutch today.  Can't wait for the English translation:

Amigoe.com - http://www.amigoe.com/english/ - 04/25/2007:

Quote
Protest against the choller problem again

A group of concerned citizens protested for the second time in a short period of time the inconvenience of chollers that according to them have increased enormously.

ORANJESTAD – A second protest march for Michael Saladin and against the choller problem took place on Monday afternoon.  The march started in front of the court house and finished at the parliamentary building, where Chairman Mervin Wyatt-Ras accepted a petition from Eveline ‘Lienchi’ Merryweather, who led the protest march.

The first protest was more an expression of support for Saladin and this second one focused more on the inconvenience of the chollers.  The protesters want the government to tackle this problem as soon as possible, by moving the relief center Dak riba Cabez elsewhere, away from the center of town.

The protesters are not sure whether this protest will help, because the problem with the chollers is too big, and it won’t go away by itself.  But if nothing happens, the protesters will hit the street again.  Nobody knows how many chollers are currently wandering the streets.  The Centro di Informacion pa Asuntonan di Droga is since February busy inventorying.  This is actually the first time that the number of chollers is being counted.

How many protesters have signed the petition is not known.  The police say that there were more than 100 people at the start of the march and most of them have signed the petition right there.  When she accepted the petition, Wyatt-Ras said that she “will communicate the concern of the protesters to the parliament members”.  She emphasized that a solution for the problem is bigger than just tackling the inconvenience in the town center.  It is more important to do more against the selling of drugs and more attention must be paid in the schools to prevent young people from using drugs at a young age.

I posted Diario's article about this yesterday. Wasn't this Merryweather guy the one who led the protest against Beth?

Oduber's son tried to rape an American girl in their home???  Shocked

Wanted to post that apparently Oduber's son had an America girlfriend. When she tried to break up is when the assult occurred. (That is the "back story" and I do not know if correct, or any other details.)
