 Aruba Needs Your Help!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hi everyone,

we have a bit of a problem that needs your help. as we all know, petty crime has been on the increase in aruba. we can do something about this but not without your help.

the obvious help is protect your belongings. don't be foolish tourists and leave items for other tourists and local criminals to take. remember, although aruba is safer than just about anywhere in our own country, petty crime does exist.

then there is the less obvious help. as requested by the powers that be, we are compiling a list of any crimes that you have witnessed or been the victims of. I don't mean the stupid kid trying to sell you a joint. I mean vandalism, petty theft, and any categories I am missing that have occurred since the first of this year. we want as many details as you remember. location, action, were police called, did they respond in a timely manner, and anything else that you can think of.

We are working closely with the authorities to maintain a safe Aruba as it has always been and continues to be relative to most places. We can be that much more effective at this with your feedback! We would like you to send an email to us with the aforementioned details. if you are uncomfortable sending it to people you don't know, you are welcome to pm me.

i will sticky this post and close this thread so that all replies can be sent to us.

thanks!!!!

Regarding the September 3rd assault at Cafe Bahia...

The bouncer has been released from custody.

Thanks Grande. Wonder what the disposition of the case was? I think we had a previous post that he had been fired ....

Summer 2005 – Two security guards jumped off building (separate episodes). La Cabana Hotel was the site of one (maybe both) of them. A Tourist in 1996:

My heart aches for Natalee and her family. I've known from the minute Natalee was announced missing on the tv, exactly what happened to her. I have been in touch with the FBI, and they have my statement. I have been to Aruba 3 times, and the last time was HORRIBLE.

In 1996, I went with my husband and 4 friends. We stayed at the same hotel Natalee stayed at. My husband and I were both drugged, taken from the hotel casino. My husband was locked in a back room of the bar The Rio Grande, I was taken out to the desert, and didnt come out of the black out until the next morning. I had been raped and beaten. I was fortunate enough to talk my way out of the situation, promising I wouldnt go to the police. When I got back to my hotel, my husband and a friend did go to the police station..........it is just like you've seen on the tv for the Holloway-Twitty family. They did NOTHING to help us at all. Even with the police knowing, that the casino-workers and the Commishioner of the casino had a problem with the "man", and were also willing to help my husband and I.

We switched hotels that day, and stayed in most of the time we were there. The night before we were to leave all 6 of us decided to go to the beach. That "man" showed up. My husband and cousin got a hold of him, we asked a hotel worker to call the police (they took almost an hour to get there). We told them what had happened and they simply put him in the back of the police jeep uncuffed, and drove away with him. I guess we were all in shock, my husband and I just glad to be leaving both alive.
They have never mentioned on the news the brothel out in the desert behind the Holiday Inn pass the light house, thats were I was taken to, a police-woman told me that it was a wh*re-House, no big deal??

I have tried to get in touch with the Beth Holloway, I think I could maybe help her or at least tell her that Natalee didnt feel any pain, as I said I was drugged and I dont remember anything until the next day. A lot of parents are now coming on tv again with the same situations of missing children from all islands, but none have gotten any justice or even an answer. It seems I am the only one to have survived. I pray for Natalee and her family every morning and every night, and badly wish there was a way to comfort her mom, who has been, and has had to be, a very strong woman. My husband had to only endure a couple hours of not knowing if I was alive or what happened. He said he cant imagine how they feel. So our hearts and prayers are with them daily. I hope this all ends soon for them, no mother should have to be put through this.
I havent been able to talk about what happened to me for 9 years, but I would do ANYTHING to help Natalee and her family.

There are also several accounts, usually written about on the tourist boards, about  robbery that occured while in Aruba.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"On the third night (still with many of the problems unresolved) the villa was broken into while we were sleeping. The thieves were actually in two of our bedrooms while we were asleep!!! We lost everything that was not in the safe in a different bedroom - 2 cameras, cell phone, Tag Hauer watch, cash from that evening, jewelry from that evening, etc. I hesitate to think what could have happened if one of us had awakened. This was a very scary and potentially lethal situation. The next morning we asked to be moved and were transferred to a lovely villa at Tierra del Sol. One of the couples was so traumatized that they returned home to the US immediately. "

ripped off at the Mill Inn
What a nightmare. I booked this hotel as an add on to our one week timeshare in Aruba. The night before our departure home we went out to eat and returned to find our room ransacked, robbed, the room's safe wide open with our stuff gone. Missing: $250 from the LOCKED safe, $1200 worth of cameras, GPS, etc. Compensation from hotel management: $122. Sorry, we expected more-- lots more. WHY? This was a "set up" room. The lock mechanism was exposed from the outside. ( I only noticed in the darkened entry way AFTER the robbery when I tried to understand how they got in.) The 2nd floor patio door was left open. Well, they used a simple tool(pliers, etc.) to reach inside the mechanism and simply open the front door, MUST have had the safe company's electronic overide device to override the digital PIN only I knew and opened the safe, picked all the electronics from the dresser, opened the patio door to retrieve anything they may have missed and walked right out the way they came in. Paid 60 days in advance with Expedia and no compensation there either. Lesson learned: never book with an independent hotel where there is no "corporate" leverage to keep the locals honest and, CLOSELY inspect your door security before you agree to stay in a room. This room was one of TWO on the entire second floor with this "open" door to burglars. There is nothing that explains the cash stolen directly from the safe except them HAVING the hotel's safe override deviceThe hotel mgmt agreed to write a note to me indicating the inadequecy of their room security but never did so and refused answering my emails. Disgusted. Will never return to Aruba and will tell all I know not to visit. They want my American money-- all of it.

Aruba: Paradise Beach Villas: "Trouble At Paradise"
Jan 21, 2005  A TripAdvisor Member, Boston, Ma.

I would have given a zero rating, but the people we met were too nice. The first nite of our stay we got robbed in our room while we slept. As far as the resort goes our first impression of the place started out less than stellar, the buildings are all pink, not that I mind pink, but it's just a bit too much pink. The first set of hallways we walked down smelled very badly of mold, the carpets were ripped up and dirty, the vending machines were beat up. When we finally got to our room after walking for about 1/4 mile, we opened the doors to see a set-up from the 1970's, from the kitchen stove that had rust holes to the pink tub with mold around it that didn't drain when you showered. After complaining to the staff they reluctantly moved us to the front building, which was built in the late 1990's. Anyone that gives the Paradise Villas a good rating had to have stayed in these units since they are in much better shape and don't wreak of mold, we actually liked our unit except for the floors which are like an ice skating rink, do to the humidity and lack of a dehumidifier. As far as the staff and security, they blamed everyone but themselves for someone climbing up the balcony and breaking into our room while we slept, they said we should have had the money in the safe. But unfortunately our safe did not work. As far as the 4 security guards well when I went downstairs the next night after midnight they were all hanging out in the lobby sipping coffee. The staff was absolutely no help after the robbery, I wanted to call the USA to cancell my ATM and the lady at the front desk said she couldn't help me, she told me to go to the pay phone around the corner, which I went to but it didn't work. Also don't ever get robbed in Aruba on a Sunday like we did, because the police station is closed on Sundays.
By the way if the robber ever reads this, you missed the 21 $100 bills right underneath my wallet. Thank You!

Greta,
I have been following the Natalee Holloway story since the beginning. My family and I were vacationing in Aruba when Natalee disappeared. We follow the story nightly on your show for the latest updates and as a parent, I appreciate your coverage and determination to keep this story in the public eye and assist the Holloway family in their search for the truth. I fear if it were not for the media coverage, this case would have already been set aside as an unsolved disappearance.
There is one comment that is continually made by Arabian authorities in regard to the low crime rate in Aruba. Could this statistic be due to the record keeping of the same authorities that are also responsible for the current investigation? When you reported last night that authorities had stated that security cameras were being installed in several hotel areas for security purposes I felt inclined to share what happened to my family while we were vacationing there. We were burglarized while we were sleeping in our bedrooms in Aruba House. One of my daughters, returning from visiting with other family members at another location, walked in while this was going on but was unaware of the danger. We discovered that we had been robbed the next morning and was advised to report the situation to the property manager. We did so and was advised that the security company would be notified to review the film from the security camera and that we would be notified of their findings. When we did not hear back, we again contacted the property manager to be informed that they were not able to determine anything from the film. This was on the night before we were scheduled to fly out the next morning. Upon returning home we contacted the owner of Aruba House and was advised to contact the property manager to file a police report. I did so but was advised that I would need to do that in person. All I am trying to say is that security camera are not necessarily a deterrent to crime. I continue to think of what could have happened to any member of my family if we had awakened during the robbery. I do not consider Aruba "One Happy Island."
I just wanted to share this experience with you and as much as we loved the island of Aruba, I do not plan to return because of the way the Holloway case has been handled as well as our personal experience. I would like the Holloway family to know that we will continue to pray for resolution to the disappearance of Natalee. Please continue with your coverage.

Back from first trip to Aruba and didn't have a great experience. We rented a private home near the California Lighthouse and on our second night there it was robbed. We lost two passports, cell phones, an iPod, a laptop, a necklace, sunglasses and camera cords. It was only our second night there so it put a damper on our trip.

We tried to make the best of it and did have some fun but were always a little nervous as to what we would find when we got back to the house. We did go on the Kuku Kinuko bus, the Mi Dushi, and the Tattoo and had a blast. Also, did a lot of snorkeling.

So, please make sure you lock your valuables up but even that may not help. Our safe was ripped out of the floor and the room was broken open with a crowbar.

Sorry about your experience. I am also very familiar with getting robbed in Aruba. When I was robbed there last year, the thiefs ripped the safe out of the wall and took it with them. My other two experiences were in connection with my car.

Drugs are a major problem among the natives.

I was robbed on the beach. Aruba is no longer a paradise. Word has spread--be careful.

ARUBA BY KAREN MARINO

My  Mom and Dad just got in last night from their 1-month trip to
Aruba. Of course they loved it and had perfect weather.

They  did  mention  a  couple  of things that surprised me -- but
maybe  some  of  you  have  already heard about them. I thought I
post  what  they  told me...of course, stories to get embellished
along the way.

First  they  said  just  before  they  got  there  2/1  Columbian
Emeralds  (at  the  Marriott,  I  believe) was robbed my men with
machine  guns  who shot up the jewelry cases. I don't believe the
store  was  open  at  the  time,  however  I'm  not  certain. Now
Columbian Emeralds has security all around with 9mm pistols.

Then  there  was  a supposed "hit" on someone in town. The gunman
shot  the  wrong  person  and  an Aruban woman was shot (I do not
know  if  she  was killed).
Evidently the Arubans were protesting
on  the  streets  after  this  incident  because  the  hitman was
Venezuelan or Columbian.

My  parents were visiting friend of their who were staying at the
Americana.  They  were  seated  under  a  few  palms close to the
sidewalk  that  runs  between  the  hotels and the beach - on the
edge  of the Americana near the watersport place by the Radisson.
My  mom  left  her  beachbag  with  nothing in it but sunglasses,
lotions,  an  inexpensive  watch  and  some  "junk".  She had the
beachbag  fastened  closed  with the rope that secures it and had
it  tied  to  the  lounge chair while my parents took a walk into
the  Radisson  for  something.  When they came back she went into
her  bag  which  was  still tied to the lounge and she found that
someone  had taken her watch and sunglasses.
After they had taken
her stuff they had the time to secure the bag like she had it.

She  then  noticed  a  Dutch  couple  nearby  them  who said that
someone had stolen their entire beach bag!

So  don't  bring  much to the beach and take it with you when you
wander.  They've  been  going  for 10 years and never have had an
incident.

An  interesting  note  was  they said there was a yacht about 150
foot  long  docked by Sonesta. My Dad was talking to the crew who
told  him  that  Tom Cruise had been on it, and had just left the
day before.

Also  they mentioned that they are opening a brewery jointly with
Grolish  (sp? I'm not up on the proper spelling of my beers). And
that  it  will  be  an Aruban beer. Maybe the beer prices will be
more reasonable.

All  in  all  they  had  a  great  time,  good food and came home
slightly  up  a few $$ on the gambling end. I can't imagine going
to  the  casinos  every night for 30 days. They're ready for next
year and so am I.

The crime in Aruba needs to be publisized. We were there Thanksgiving weekend, there is not enough police presence or security. Our battery was stolen from our rental car & while we were at the police station, we met Americans who had their room robbed. I WILL NEVER TAKE MY CHILDREN TO ARUBA AGAIN> I also was told that a tourist was robbed last year in the same area our battery was stolen. WE WERE STRANDED IN A TOURIST AREA WITH OUR SMALL CHILDREN & HAD TO HAVE THE RENTAL CAR TOWED> ARUBA GOVERNMENT DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE CRIME... WE PAY ENOUGH IN HOTEL TAXES & UTILITY CHARGES IN ARUBA WHEN WE VISIT. WE SPEND OUR AMERICAN MONEY. .

Excerpt from a lengthy Aruba Trip Report. Follow link for full report.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

One interesting, upsetting thing that happened while we were there was an
armed bank robbery at the Aruba bank near the high-rise hotels on Palm Beach. One of the bank tellers was actually killed. They arrested 20 or so people but didn't get all of them. The Arubians were very upset by this crime,
stating in the tourist paper that there hadn't been a crime like that since
1983. Aruba has always seemed to us to be a peaceful, safe place. We hope
that our little piece of paradise does not change too much with the infusion
of drugs and influence of other countries.

Now for the BAD NEWS!! The second day we were there we were robbed yes believe it or not I guess you can not get away from crime no matter where you go. I was told by someone on the B.B. that the best place to snorkle on the island was Mangel Halto which it was. I never saw so many great fish in such shallow water. But then we get back the the car and I opened the trunk to get the bag out and it was gone I said someone took our bag. I then said how did they get in then we go around to see that they had pop the lock on the car door. So had to call the police and it was off to San Nicolas police station for 2 hours so they could fill out a report. Did not have much of value in the bag it just left a bad taste in my mouth for the rest of the day. I did not let it ruin my vacation just please watch where you go.

ROBBERY AT DIVI VILLAGE ARUBA

Just a note to warn people I thought I was safe, my family was safe
in ARUBA, but his year would have been our 5th year, my husband
retired on the 31st of October, so we didn't use our week but my
daughter did, the room was broken into, a $300 Nextel phone her
friend's was taken her ESQ watch I bought her when she started at
DELTA, her camera, and her friends clothes, even his bathing suits,
we are in D Bldg unit 8202, they even took the VCR she noticed that
today, it makes you feel very unsafe, so thank God she was not alone
or in the shower, they didn't get into the safe. LOW CRIME??I don't
think so I have noticed people smoking pot on the beach in broad day
light natives?? Things can be replaced and thank God no one was hurt
but I will never feel safe there again. Does anyone know crime
statistics for Aruba???

There was an account on a blog of an armed robbery of a casino full of gamblers in Aruba a few years back.  Does anyone know where that can be found?  I used to have it on my other hard drive.

Seems the man was present when armed masked robbers entered a casino and robbed it as well as the customers and left.

If anyone has information on this please post.  Thanks.

And thanks for all these posts.  So many burglaries while the people in the room asleep.  I wonder what would have happened if they had awakened while the burglars were still at work in the room?    I also wonder how so many could gain entry into supposedly locked hotel rooms.

Leslie posted this 11/14/2006 at the LCD; it's a Bon Dia article from the same date:

Here is another murder to add:

Page 3-Look for the phrase " curpa sin bida" translated means "body without life". The vistim's name was Igmar Camallo.

I'll see if I can get a little bit more translated later.

Yes, Sharon's account from Combat Jack is the armed robbery of a casino full of gamblers that I was trying to recall.

Thanks!  We have had so much help with this, they have really covered a tremendous amount of crime in just a very few short years.

How on earth Aruba could have ever claimed to be crime free just boggles my mind!
