05/03/2005 Wade Ralph (Avg: 4.08 Review) - I snorkeled this site 5 times in 7 days. Lots of fish around rocks, abundant starfish, saw a Moray Eel, lobster, puffer fish early morning. The reefs were sand covered due to Hurricane Ivan last fall. Malmok and Depalm slope best on the island.
Beware of theft @ Malmok as my rental car was stolen 4-30-2005 while I snorkeled.
They took key out of bag hidden in rocks. Very common per Police.

Angry Watch your luggage!!
We checked in this past Sunday, handed our luggage over to a bellman and headed out to the pool while we waited for our room to be ready. Two and a half hours later, we were surprised to see that our luggage was still outside and even more surprised (and disgusted) to discover that an IPOD had been stolen from a backpack while the luggage was in their care. So far, Marriott has denied responsibility even through it is clear that they were negligent in not putting the bags into their secure area. My advice, don't leave your bags with them or at a minimum accompany them to the secure area so the start of your vacation will not be ruined as ours was.

By the bear
January 12th 2006
Everyone i met there was pretty friendly, taxi-drivers, shopkeepers, etc.
but there was a couple mugged outside of our resort while we were there and i definitely wouldn't go around at night without a big group and at least one boy per taxi.
I certainly wouldn't classify it as a scary place, a little common sense seemed to go a long way in terms of security, and i would definitely go back. Go back and stay at the Hyatt. The gorgeous gorgeous Hyatt. On the beach with a casino and TCBY. Sigh.

Amigoe.com
- 11/15/2006:
Minister accused of assault
ORANJESTAD –A woman has lodged an assault complaint against a minister of the Oduber-cabinet. The Public Prosecutor (OM) in Aruba confirmed that the police are investigating the complaint of a woman against a minister. The OM didn’t say much about this matter.
The case has caused a lot of commotion on the island.
There are a lot of speculations on whom this minister is, and that he has left for Miami. Correspondent of Z-86 in Curacao, Toko Winklaar and chide editor of the Aruban newspaper Awe Mainta reported that the only minister that is currently abroad is Ramon Lee (MEP). He didn’t say though that Lee is the offender.
The victim is supposedly an employee of another minister. It is not clear whether the charge is assault, sexual intimidation, or even rape.
From Amigoe.com/english 11/27/2006
ORANJESTAD – Glenda Oduber, wife of Prime Minister Nelson Oduber (MEP) is called to witness in the matter of the reporting against Minister Ramon Lee. The national detective is currently investigating a reporting on sexual offence against the minister of Labour, Sport, and Culture. Oduber’s wife is interrogated because before the reporting, the supposed victim had telephoned her about what happened. “Hundreds of people call here every day with all sorts of storeys. We cannot check everything whether they are true or not. That would mean that we are in court every day or called to witness”, was the premier’s comment on the witness call.
Oduber says that they received the call to witness via fax around 16:30 on Thursday. Several newspapers reported this the next day already, which is very strange. “Only we and the Public prosecutor are supposed to know about the call”, said Oduber. His opinion is that all the parties have to be careful and reserved about the case. “It’s a very sensitive matter and I regret the way everything is now in the media. I also regret the fact that I had to hear the woman cry again telling her story on several radio stations today (Friday, editor).”
He therefore hopes that the OM will soon have a definite answer on the legal actions and on what had happened exactly. It’s not right for the government and definitely not for his wife. He does not understand why his wife was called by the National detectives. “This is a small community and everybody has stories. Since I receive a lot of calls, my wife has become kind of a secretary at home. She hears so many things, but she cannot determine what is true and what is not. Why didn’t the woman go straight to the police instead of calling my house? Only somebody that has seen what happened or that knows the details can be considered a witness. And that’s not my wife.”

Interesting little tidbit from the dutch amigoe version today .. waiting for chance to read in English.
ORANJESTAD - we have no alien necessary that ounce come say how unsafely our island is. A arubaan who such call things, calls I to a country traitor, lets stand to an alien who gives a bad name to Aruba abroad. That is still more terrible. That says to minister Rudy Croes (MEP) of justice on remarks of Jorge Pesquera, director of Aruba hotel And Tourism Association (Ahata). 16 Nov, 2006, 17.29 (GMT -04:00)

MsMarple,
I hope readers will be able to find this thread over here. It was doing so well I would hate to mess with that.
Also, I was going to post the article about the minister of government being accused of assault but you are just too fast for me and too good.
When something is this systemic, one has to wonder if this is a cultural problem for this man surely is not just some garden variety punk but a representative of the sitting government. I wonder why he left the country if innocent?

Trouble in paradise: Crime in the caribbean
BY GARY LEE
THE WASHINGTON POST
November 17, 2006, 2:35 PM EST
Accounts published in Caribbean news media and on locals' blogs indicate that break-ins at small hotels or vacation rentals are occurring more frequently on some Caribbean outposts and in parts of Bermuda and the Bahamas.
No overall regional statistics are available on vacation home thefts affecting tourists in the Caribbean. However, the most recent U.S. State Department consular information sheets, which give up-to-date safety information on countries around the globe, cite break-ins in the past year in St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Anguilla, St. Kitts, Nevis,
Aruba
, Bonaire and St. Maarten. The reports also have begun recommending that visitors lock valuables in hotel safes and other properties on almost all Caribbean islands, Bermuda and the Bahamas.
Until recently, the biggest worry facing most tourists in the Caribbean was petty crime: aggressive soliciting, muggings and purse snatchings. But in the past two years, according to accounts by travelers and in the Caribbean press, a rising number of infractions have occurred in vacation accommodations. In most cases, intruders broke into quarters and took cameras, cell phones, cash, laptops and passports. In some cases, they raped or killed.
In June, for instance, an American couple at Mago Estate, a small eco-lodge near the southern tip of St. Lucia, were awakened in the night by intruders. They were robbed, and the wife was raped, according to an account on a Web site they created. Two suspects are awaiting trial.
In a string of incidents that have rocked the island of Tobago in the past year and a half, four robbers -- masked and wielding cutlasses -- entered a rental villa in the upscale Mount Irvine area and attacked three men from England. The incident left two of the visitors with cuts from the weapons.
In July 2005, a British teen-ager vacationing with his family in a private residence in St. James Parish, Barbados, was shot and killed by an intruder. Three men have been charged.
To be sure, incidents like those affect a minuscule percentage of travelers to the Caribbean.
"We're not saying don't go to these islands," said a State Department spokesman, who asked not to be quoted by name, in keeping with department policy. "But take the same precautions that you would in other places."
Most tourism authorities and property owners also emphasized the low crime rate in the islands compared with resorts in the United States or other places. In some islands, officials have responded by beefing up crime-fighting forces. St. Lucia added police officers, brought in senior law enforcement officials from England and is installing a forensics lab to assist in crime follow-up, said Kirby Allain, a spokesman for the government of St. Lucia. In Tobago, the government plans to supplement the police force, install new streetlights across the island and introduce more patrols in popular beach areas. Anguilla also has increased its police force.
Faced for the first time with rising crime, many of the locals and travel vendors on the affected islands have been jolted. "Over the years, we have had so little crime that when we have some, it sets us back," said Kimberly Mahabir, a manager at Tobago's Caribbean Estates, Lands & Villas, a real estate and rental agency. "But now we have to adjust and make whatever changes are necessary for our safety and that of visitors."

Only problem I have with the mirroring of the thread, is that the regular forum Index, Natalee Holloway topic, is still THERE (good), but is not visually reflecting new posts (bad). People think nothing new has been added since 11/14, 9 pages.
Once they click it, though, they can see that more than 9 pages are there.

The Minister of Justice of Aruba Rudy Croes writes a letter to the head of AHATA (in English)
Solo di Pueblo
http://www.solodipueblo.com/
It is a fact that tourism is down, but it has nothing to do with crime but rather a lack of promotion by the non-Aruban members of AHATA.

Interesting; more references to the southwest, presumably Saventa. On a sad note,
I understand there was a murder this morning in Aruba
. All I have heard at this point is that the victim worked at a Valero Gas Station in North Aruba, near a gated community. I imagine there will be news coverage in the local papers tomorrow

Would like to clarify that the emphasized portion above was not intended to be a political comment. Or dismissive of Rehab. We certainly hear this a lot when public figures (of all kinds) get into trouble; we don't hear about it for non-public figures, or anyone who, to his/her credit, has not gotten into major legal trouble before going to Rehab.
Indeed one of the helpful things about Rehab is the ability to keep the public, the press, and even one's friends and family totally removed from the process - because no telling who is enabling, supplying, providing the triggers, etc.
I have known too many families that have struggled with addiction to treat the subject lightly. And am aware that not all addictions are directly chemical - gambling, shopping, sex are among many other legal activities that produce a "high" which, as I understand it, is the exact same brain chemical reaction as externally introduced drugs. Addiction to those activities, not normal pursuit, is what leads to trouble.
(I am probably not saying that very well, but hope you get the gist.)
My comment was an unfortunate attempt at humor at the expense of an Auba official, whom I considered to be fair game, and I am sorry that there was more to be read into it than intended.

I don't know if this has been published yet or not, but I am told there was a 16 year old boy was killed last night outside of Carlos & Charlies amounting to the 2nd murder in 10 days.

"Last night there was another killing infront of C&C. A 16 year old boy was killed. From what I heard, there was a fight outside of C&C and the kid was not even involved in the fight. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time. There was no shooting. So, I guess, he was hit and punched and he died. C&C gets very very very busy on weekends. So, a lot of people dont bother going in. They just stand outside the bar, hangout, drink and do drugs and then start fights....Well, that's exactly what happened last night and a young boy lost his life. Well, this is the 2nd murder in 10 days on the one happy island..."
and a follow-up:
Here are a couple other details I have heard...
The alleged suspect was recently released from jail
Was an employee of Tony Romas as of yesterday
Turned himself in today and has apparently taken his own life.
I have no idea how this will be reported and cannot confirm the validity at this point. I am fairly certain on all three accounts. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news regardless of the origin.

Believe the victim was Hoben Mayron Bayne, age 16.
I *think* the suspect is "A.U.I." age 27. Is Carpe saying he committed suicide after he was arrested?

. I read it as the suspect committed suicide also. Tyler is calling it Arubicide which would help to explain some of these very convenient acts of taking ones own life.

Thank you, Elaine. I am just pondering if a murder suicide should only count as one crime when the suicide is also believed to be crime related as in this instance.
Guess so but seems a shame to just ignore that second killing of himself.
Arubicide is the word Tyler uses to describe that, suspicious suicides.
