This was our first time to Aruba- we stayed at the Marriott Ocean Club.
Within 2 hours of checking in, someone had broken into our room from the rear window (between 7-9pm, which was still daylight), and stolen my laptop, video camera, and other items. The path behind the window was certainly not "lonely", so how could someone know which room to break into and walk out with the stuff raises serious doubts about the hotel staff.
When the front desk was alerted about this, it seemed like this was a common occurrence- they took their time calling security, very casual about the incident, and we never saw the hotel manager at all.
Later on, we learnt that several of my friends had their cars broken into in Aruba, and hotel staff said that thefts were common in Aruba.

Hotel Security Useless
Reviewer: Darren, Massachusetts
We stayed at the Divi Divi for 7 days. The hotel was clean and it was very beautiful. The buffet at both the Divi Divi and the Tamarijn did have lots of flys but nothing that caused us not to eat.
We only experienced a problem with the security. On the second night of our stay at the Divi, my father who was staying in an adjoining room from my wife and I heard a loud noise when we were out around 11pm. He walked into our room to find that a man was standing over our cameras and valuables in our room. He had taken the "permanent" side of the sliding glass door off the track and basically walked in. My father yelled at the top of his lungs and the man ran, dropping his cell phone, which we kept and gave to the police. It was a local person who broke in.

Bleachedblack,
And we were originally told that this thread was BS because all the crime happened away from the tourists! Seems that most of it happens TO the tourists! The high number of robberies, burglaries and room invasions is appalling and something I am very stunned to see.
Obviously from the manner in which many of these burglaries and thefts are conducted, this is not the first time they have done this, either.

Depending on the ruling on the infant death, one of these would take the annual count to seven or eight.
Isn't suicide by hanging very rare for a female? Her photo seems so
full of life, I have to wonder about the circumstances surrounding this death. One can only hope there will be an adequate investigation
instead of the usual tendency to obfuscate and jump to conclusions
that place guilt with the victim.
The body on the beach has the word cocaine in the article and no name
which seems to be pending location and notification of the family but a black car is shown in a photograph. I suppose the car belonged to the
victim? This one seems to be the all too common cocaine-related mess from which there is never any answer.
MsMarple, end of the year entries for the Summary for and taking the
count even higher. I also assume suicide is a crime of sorts, a tragic one.
I wish we had kept count of the suicides as well as they are also abnormally high given the population. I wonder if there are suicide stats
anywhere on One UnHappy Island.
What would be the effect on tourism of having one of the highest
suicides rates in the world be? This has to be approaching that of
the Scandinavians who are reported to have the highest rates.
Anyone want a new project?
We did it on the murders and our count was verified by the officials who had previously said no stats were kept crime was so low. That was not true. Somewhere there are likely
suicide stats as well if someone will only ferret them out.
A death has to be given a reason if other than natural causes and I can't think of one that is conducive to tourism.

Crime in Aruba
Just some articles and links to crime in Aruba that is supposed to be non-existant. Some of them, mind you, are a few years old, therefore may not apply, but should at least clear up the myth that there is no crime in Aruba.
The Evening Standard (London, England); 4/1/2004
A BARBER who was unmasked as Britain's biggest ever crack cocaine dealer was behind bars today and facing a lengthy jail term - but police are still trying to trace his missing millions.
Evidence from around the world suggests Lincoln White created an international drugs empire, amassing a [pounds sterling]170 million fortune.
White, who told the court he was a "freelance barber", imported the cocaine from Panama, Mexico, Aruba, and Grenada before turning it into crack at Tulloch's flat.
Crack in Aruba? Gee, what a surprise

Caribbean Update
December 01, 2001
There has been an increase in crime in Aruba, reports the U.S. State Dept. (Nov. 9, 2001),which notes: "Although strolling downtown or in other tourist areas after dark used to be generally safe, Americans should note that there has been a sharp rise in armed robberies.
Newspapers report these incidents as being mostly drug related. There have been incidents of theft from hotel rooms. Petty crime and credit card fraud continues to be a problem."

Authorities have detained four Dutch marines on drug-smuggling suspicions, sending two back to the Netherlands and keeping two in custody in Aruba while the military investigates, a spokeswoman said Friday.
The four suspects, who have not been identified by name, were low-ranking marines serving in a 200-strong military presence at the Savanega base in this Dutch Caribbean territory, spokeswoman Lt. Melanie van de Haak said.
They were detained March 17 during raids at their homes in Aruba, and "had been suspects during an ongoing investigation," she said.
I came across several links related to the casinos in Aruba and the Gambino crime family. The mob in casinos? Tell me it isn't so. Do a google search for more info on that one.

A majority of the people imprisoned in the Netherlands are foreigners or immigrants, the Central Bureau for Statistics said Monday.
At the end of September 2003, 55 percent of the Dutch prison population was born abroad, compared with 50 percent 10 years ago, the government agency said.
The increase could reflect the drive in recent years to crack down on crime, especially drug offenses.
The overall number of people in prison rose by 7 percent to around 13,000 from September 2002, the statistics office said.
Around 9 percent of prisoners are from Suriname, the former Dutch colony, and an additional 9 percent from the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba, both Dutch possessions in the Caribbean. Moroccans comprise 7 percent and Turks 5 percent.
About 2 percent of prisoners are illegal immigrants awaiting deportation. That figure does not include the 46,000 asylum seekers detained in dormitory-like "deportation centers" while their applications are processed.
Of the 1,600 prisoners serving a sentence of longer than four years, 70 percent were convicted of violent crimes and 25 percent of drug offenses. The Netherlands is believed to be one of the world's largest producers of the synthetic party drug Ecstasy, and a gateway for cocaine traffic through Europe.

The crime in Aruba needs to be publisized. We were there Thanksgiving weekend, there is not enough police presence or security. Our battery was stolen from our rental car & while we were at the police station, we met Americans who had their room robbed. I WILL NEVER TAKE MY CHILDREN TO ARUBA AGAIN> I also was told that a tourist was robbed last year in the same area our battery was stolen. WE WERE STRANDED IN A TOURIST AREA WITH OUR SMALL CHILDREN & HAD TO HAVE THE RENTAL CAR TOWED> ARUBA GOVERNMENT DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE CRIME... WE PAY ENOUGH IN HOTEL TAXES & UTILITY CHARGES IN ARUBA WHEN WE VISIT. WE SPEND OUR AMERICAN MONEY. .

I don't understand the concept of someone going to a public beach to OD on Cocaine. That seems like one of the last places a person would go especially with all the government-provided crackhouses.
One might think a person would go to some place more private if the use of cocaine is illegal to avoid arrest instead of to the beach. And it seems a very lonely place to go for this as well.
If these deaths are in fact cocaine overdoses, are they dying some other places and their bodies being dumped on the beach?
This is a very strange phenomenon. I don't think the beach is a favorite place to overdose in this country. At least, I have never heard of this happening.

- and any I've missed from the last few pages -
Thanks to all of you for your posts.
Off the top of my head - we already had the Bulgarian guy (he was shot in a hotel elevator!); I do not think we had the marines arrested re. drug transporting, although I do recall hearing about that a while back.
Others I am not sure of. It's good to try to nail down a date or some other way to identify these incidents; otherwise it's hard to tell if they're duplicates. Especially for thefts.
But by all means post whatever you find.
I would like to know, with all of the drug ODs, if the police are finding the baggies or whatever the supply was in, at the death scene, and are there any "leftovers"? If you think along those lines, and mull over the number of times these bodies are found on the beach (... within the tide line? where small objects would be presumed to have washed away ...) No one is going to leave "good drugs" with a body - too valuable.
I too am very suspicious of the hanging. Not at all a woman's method of suicide. ALE will be very remiss if they don't investigate what would bring an apparently successful, young, attractive woman to such a demise.
I will do an updated
Summary
of the murders and
violent
crimes that will cover all of 2006. (Within the next few days.) I am still hoping to find out what has been determined about charges in the death of "Baby D". Baby D could be the 7th murder
that we know of
for 2006. I doubt that we will learn anything about these two new "Arubacides" by year end.
Sometime during the early morning of 12/22, this thread passed the
6,000
views mark. It is now early morning of 12/28, and it looks as though it might hit
7,000
by dawn!
I honestly do not know what to make of this.
I wish some of the folks who are reading here would post and tell us what they're looking for ...
You can post on the front page without registering ...
Again, thanks to all the Monkeys who do post incidents here. Good eyes! Good job!

MsMarple,
I think it would be good to wait until we have a ruling on all the deaths in 2006 before doing the update. That is, unless you can just add the rulings on these last two plus Baby D sort of after the fact.
We are looking at what I believe is an eight murder year, a tie with 1998, and I think all of them included would be a very good thing.
The crime in Aruba surpasses anything that I expected us to find. I still had in mind to make folks aware of the crime there but never thought that there was this prevalence of it.
Once the Summary is complete with the latest rulings, even if it takes all of January to get them, I am going to relaunch my emailing campaign and send the NEW Summary out to all I sent it to before as an Update.
I do believe some have sort of come to ssort of depend on this as almost a service for reporting serious crime in what sells itself as a crime-free environment. Even the Bulgarian was killed right in the midst of the tourists, too, for those who like to say this does not happen where the tourist are. It does and it is very dangerous and nothing like what we were told to expect from the once-popular tourist destination.

- Yes, I know what you mean ... about the "outstanding Arubacides".
Baby D could be No. 7
If both of these Arubacides are foul play, they would be No. 8 & No. 9.

I have posted A. C.'s story from Aruba 1996 numerous times...She was drugged, kidnapped, beaten & raped...ALE did NOTHING about it...later she sees the man & even then they still are reluctant to arrest him...But, in her story she names the places she was taken to.....
My heart aches for Natalee and her family. I've known from the minute Natalee was announced missing on the tv, exactly what happened to her. I have been in touch with the FBI, and they have my statement. I have been to Aruba 3 times, and the last time was HORRIBLE. In 1996, I went with my husband and 4 friends. We stayed at the same hotel Natalee stayed at. My husband and I were both drugged, taken from the hotel casino.
My husband was locked in a back room of the bar The Rio Grande, I was taken out to the desert, and didnt come out of a black out until the next morning. I had been raped and beaten.
I was fortunate enough to talk my way out of the situation, promising I wouldnt go to the police. When I got back to my hotel, my husband and a friend did go to the police station..........it is just like you've seen on the tv for the Holloway-Twitty family. They did NOTHING to help us at all. Even with the police knowing, that the casino-workers and the Commishioner of the casino had a problem with the "man", and were also willing to help my husband and I.
We switched hotels that day, and stayed in most of the time we were there. The night before we were to leave all 6 of us decided to go to the beach. That "man" showed up. My husband and cousin got a hold of him, we asked a hotel worker to call the police (they took almost an hour to get there). We told them what had happened and they simply put him in the back of the police jeep uncuffed, and drove away with him. I guess we were all in shock, my husband and I just glad to be leaving both alive.
They have never mentioned on the news the brothel out in the desert behind the Holiday Inn pass the light house, thats were I was taken to, a police-woman told me that it was a wh*re-House, no big deal??
I have tried to get in touch with the Beth Holloway, I think I could maybe help her or at least tell her that Natalee didnt feel any pain, as I said I was drugged and I dont remember anything until the next day. A lot of parents are now coming on tv again with the same situations of missing children from all islands, but none have gotten any justice or even an answer. It seems I am the only one to have survived. I pray for Natalee and her family every morning and every night, and badly wish there was a way to comfort her mom, who has been, and has had to be, a very strong woman. My husband had to only endure a couple hours of not knowing if I was alive or what happened. He said he cant imagine how they feel. So our hearts and prayers are with them daily. I hope this all ends soon for them, no mother should have to be put through this.
I havent been able to talk about what happened to me for 9 years, but I would do ANYTHING to help Natalee and her family.
A.C.

Another aspect of the recent body on the beach that is troubling is the position of the arms. They are in the position of someone having been dragged, not dying of a self-induced overdose. I have nurses training and have never seen a person die in that position. I don't think even a seizure would account for the arms being straight up like that.
So at the least, this person has been positioned in this manner most likely by dragging his corpse. I seem to recall other suicides also being in very strange positions like this. Not fetal position or even losing consciousness while sleeping but dragged by the arms.
Others of these beach bodies appear to have been dumped or tossed out and not in a position one could imagine one would assume in death.
So at the very least we have some sort of tampering with the corpse as in dragging by the arms. I suppose it will be said ALE did it for some unknown reason, etc. in order to stick to the story line but how unprofessional can they be!
Next time they should remember to put the arms back down!

I was thinking that also...about his arms over his head....But, as alot of these men live with their families...it's not inconceivable for someone to go off to a beach to be alone.
I wish the Papi translator worked better....
About Brigitte Katelaan...I "assumed" she had everything going for her & no reason to end her life. Turns out, she was suffering from depression, separation from her daughter, & guilt over a promotion she received over other deserving collegues. How sad.

Does anyone find these photographs gruesome & inappropriate?
The victim was identified..
Why the need to display them like this in the media?

The corpse pictures are examples of "sensational" or "yellow" journalism; used to be prime tabloid fodder here. (Before photos, there would be graphic, sometimes exagerated sketches, possibly by an artist who had not even been at the scene.)
I'm not sure about this, but I think family lawsuits may have eventually ended this particular practice. Or perhaps the Police did, on the grounds that it interfered with investigation.
There is no argument, unfortunately, that the public LOVES this stuff. Always jacks up news stand sales.

I have no way of finding information on suicides in Aruba and given the
language differences, probably could not read it if I found it. However, here is a link to suicide stats for this country with method by gender which is pretty hard to find even on line.
It would seem males use the method of hanging five to seven times more than females. That alone it would seem would be grounds for at least a little curiosity on the part of law enforcement in Aruba concerning this strange suicide. The location of being on her front porch is a further anomaly. The vast majority of suicides by hanging in this country happen in very small minorities such as Native Americans and newly migrated from Africa but seldom in the general population.

I am not saying this is anything other than suicide, only that it deserves an investigation as does any suspicious and so far out of the ordinary death. A complete investigation and autopsy was required for my own sister's death merely because it was unattended by any other person. Natural causes but because there was no one else present, it had to be investigated as a possible suspicious death, something we understood and were thankful for the concern.
