What a great idea for a thread. I'll throw in my two cents, mainly because my opinion on this is so completely unwavering.

As a kid, as early as 5th grade, I would throw pillows down on the floor of my bedroom. I had an old-fashioned stereo system that I had connected 4 speakers to. Not "quad", but 4-speakers on a regular stereo. I'd lay the speakers down in the shape of a diamond pointing inward and lie on the pillow in the center and crank up Pink Floyd's "The Wall" at high volume. Being a child of the late 70's, my room also had a respectable collection of disco lights. I sat them on top of the speakers and placed a blanket on top my my little audio cocoon. Hey, who needs acid? Smile

One day when I was sick and stayed home from school, I laid there on the floor and listened to the album all the way thru 4 times.  (Album, as in LP, having to get up every 22 minutes to change sides.)

There are a few songs on that album that continue to spellbind me. One in particular, even today as I approach 40, captivates me as if it were a religious experience. David Gilmour's wailing guitar solo at the end of "Comfortably Numb" is firmly rooted in my mind as the greatest piece of guitar work ever committed to tape. When they were recording "The Wall", David took 9 months perfecting that solo. It was time well spent. If that song comes on the radio, my wife is conditioned to sit in respectful silence as I listen. I have also been known to sit in the car, eyes closed, volume cranked, after arriving at my destination just to experience David's wailing on that stratocaster.

It's very ironic that I tell this little tale, because there's a teenage kid that lives across the street from me that cranks up his crappy "vietnam rock" all hours of the night and annoys the whole block. And I am notorious for hating music from burned-out hippie bands. But for some reason, Pink Floyd is a real exception for me. I won't be so hard on the neighbor kid next time he cranks it up and wakes the neighbors.

Neat,

I have 3 nephews that had a pretty popular band. They are not together anymore, but play in different bands.

One of them is now in a group that got permission from Kiss to do a Kiss Tribute, costumes and all. I heard they are really good.

Ok, here's a funny for ya.

when I saw the topic Great Guitars, My mind went to Roy Clark of Heehaw. lol He was the only one I could think of and he is a great guitarist. chet Atkins is another great but that is for another topic.

Showing my age and music preference I guess.

I did think of Jimi Hendricks, he should could play. Never knew he music until he died.

Have a good one,

OS out

Dear Dugga,

I became a fan of Pink Floyd late in life (50s).  I was working for a computer company and one of the young guys and I used to talk about music. He loaned me Pink Floyd's Pulse, the one with the battery and flashing red light.  I kept it for six months and bought him a new one.

Then "The Division Bell" came out and I was blown away. Then I bought the boxed set and was blown away some more.

One of my favorites was Comfortably Numb. Wish You Were Here was a very sentimental favorite of mine.

Anyway, if I were on a desert island, I would want all of Pink Floyd's music with me.

Louise

Saw 'Roger Waters' end of May in the Garden. Not a Pink Floyd fan -- but DH was/is.  Concert was great. He did 'the wall'. I was most impressed with one of his female vocalists. What a set of pipes.

Great guitar riffs?

ANYTHING by Carlos Santana

(and let's not forget 'Peter Frampton'  Razz )

I have to agree with you about Carlos Santana, he is a great guitarist. He had the misfortune(?correct word?) IMO, to be from the era of such greats as Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to head the list, so he had a lot of competition.......

Thanks for that BB

I was just a bit too young for Woodstock -- but I was there in spirit.

Carlos Santana has always been awesome.
