Classical? Choral? Am I Too Weird?
«
on:
August 04, 2007, 10:26:41 AM »
There is some classical music that makes me melt down in a puddle, especially the Baroque stuff like Vivaldi, Albinoni, Pachelbel, etc.
I also love Anglican choral music, especially the more classical stuff by John Rutter. When I listen to some of that kind of thing, I think it must be what it sounds like in heaven.
Am I possibly from another planet, or does anyone else like this stuff too?

Dear BT,
Thank you for your post about classical music. Maybe both of us are from another planet.
When I grew up, the only music was genuine country (Eddie Arnold), opera, and classical composers such as Beethoven, etc. Elvis had not yet arrived. I grew up listening to D'oly Carte operettas (Simon should know) and when I was 17, my mother took me to San Francisco and we saw "The Mikado" and "The Pirates of Penzance."
I have been a big fan of Puccini operas because they are so melodic. La Boheme, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Turando, Manon Lescaut, La Fanciulla Del West.
The Three Tenors did a lot to make opera more popular. "Nessun dorma" from Turando has become part of modern culture. Luciano Pavorotti, Placido Domino and Jose Carreras.
I, too, just melt when I hear the above music. In fact, I'm listening to two Puccini / three tenors CDs in my car for the past three weeks. Certain arias I will repeat as many as ten times.
I also love Anglican choral music and chants.
Yes, this is music from heaven.

OF - Here is some John Rutter for you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8QcpfiU3YA&mode=related&search=
The volume on the first one is a little low, unfortunately.
Also unfortunate is the fact that the very best of John Rutter's music doesn't seem to be on Youtube yet. Sigh.
Louise - I LOVE the three tenors!

Dear Oldfart,
My computer won't play youtubes so I can't send you links. I tried to find a link on Amazon for the three tenors/Puccini operas but couldn't find a link to send you.
I have often thought of my "final arrangements" too, and the music I would want played.
Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman - Time to Say Goodbye
Luciano Pavorotti - Nessun Dorma (None Shall Sleep)
Bob Dylan - Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Because my daughter's Jewish orthodoxy will awaken when I die, she will put me in the ground the next day and no music is allowed. I will have to get an attorney because I want to be buried in Hollywood Memorial Park in my mother's crypt (daughter insisted she be buried in the ground so I still own the crypt) and have a modern ceremony with music.
Oldfart, you could go to a music store and look for a generic CD of Puccini's operas. You will love them.
Love, Louise

Gregorian Chants. They are so soothing to me. Not everyone's forte, though. Can you tell I am a music minor. One of the best choral pieces we ever sang in college was a piece entitled "The Pelican". I have never heard it since. We were a an all female chorale and we had some really good music. I love Chopin nocturnes. I learned to play a few in college, but I can understand why the women would swoon over them. They are both melancholy and soothing. Has anyone ever listened to Schumann's Kinderschien? More piano pieces.

Lalas - I love Gregorian chants too. I am not familiar with that particular Schumann piece, but I will be on the lookout for it. I love piano pieces too.
