Anna,

Just heard this on our local TV, a field fire happened this morning by a train on the tracks-sparks from the train caused the fire.  So it doesn't take much to spark a fire with grass as dry as it is.

That is so scarey.  In times like these, it's good to keep an emergency bag nearby in case you have to get out.  You should have medicines you might need and such.  We had a fire not far from my home last year.  It was just so dry, we lost many acres.  My son and I were prepared to leave with our dogs, and I had small wire boxes for the cockatiel and parakeet in case we had to flee.  Keep close eye on the news, and please be safe.

They interviewed a woman who lived in a house by the tracks and she did have to leave her home until they got it under control.  You are right, keep a bag near by in case you have to leave your home.  It is 102 degrees here and it is 6:15 in the evening.  Unheard of.  It is scary.

I know my grandmother used to do that, back in the days of wringer washers.  We don't need rain here at the moment, and we are due for more the next two days.

Klaas
I am moving this over from the other thread. I think it got lost in all of Ramms posts.

I know that in one part Joran's book, he says that Freddy is mistaken about when he told him the beach story. But in the following quote, isn't he admitting that he told this to Freddy on the 30 th. Or am I reading it wrong.

Carlo asks several times why Freddy thinks that Joran left his shoes
behind.
Freddy answers: Joran did not want to walk with his shoes on the beach
and probably left them behind because of that.
Freddy tells the beachstory again that I would have told him on Monday May 30. Carlo in between asks questions all the time.
Freddy: I felt he asked me those things because he thought that me as a
good friend of Joran could understand why he had done these things. I
do not believe he asked those questions because he thought Joran would
have told me, because he repeated every time: Why do you think that?
My father does not ask Freddy anything, but he does react on Freddy's
answers to my mother. He says: why does Joran lie.

I don't think I could take all my dogs in the car with me at the same time and I won't leave them.  Just hope there is no need.  We used to have one of the highest water tables in the country.  No more, I am afraid.

My washer does empty far out in a pasture so at least there is a small area of greenery for the horses.

BlueMoon,
Yes I am starting to think of all the ways a fire could start and it is very scary.  Lightening is always a biggie in starting them not that there is any danger of us ever having rain.  We have had lightening without a drop of rain falling this summer.

Trains, people throwing cigarettes out of car windows, all sorts of ways fires get started.  And it is almost impossible to fight fire uphill I am told as it spread up to sixteen times faster.

Wisconsin Optometrist Charged in 'Twisted Made-for-TV Movie' Murder
Wednesday, August 15, 2007

A suburban Milwaukee optometrist has been charged in Minnesota with murdering a woman who apparently left him at the altar in Las Vegas.

Prosecutors allege in a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court that Dean Barrette tracked the woman down in a Minnesota hotel room last week and shot her in the head.

Authorities said the 44-year-old Cudahy, Wis., optometrist then returned to Wisconsin, cut the grass at the home he shared with his mother and left for an extended stay at a suburban motel.

The body of Alison Daniels, 24, was found at the Radisson University Hotel in Minneapolis on Aug. 6. Police said Daniels was an online escort from East Lansing, Mich.

"This is one twisted made-for-TV movie," Cudahy Detective Glen Haase said.

Court documents allege Barrette gave Daniels $4,000 to enter into a "sham marriage," but Daniels left Barrette behind in Las Vegas after receiving the money.

Barrette was in the Milwaukee County Jail on Wednesday and fighting extradition to Minnesota. A message left for the lawyer listed for him in court records was not immediately returned Wednesday.

The complaint did not say why the pair were meeting in Minneapolis nor what connection, if any, either had to the city. It also gave no indication why Barrette and Daniels planned a sham marriage.

The criminal complaint said Barrette booked two rooms at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas on July 24. A witness reported seeing Barrette give Daniels an envelope of money there in exchange for her entering into a "sham marriage."

The ceremony was scheduled for that day, but the bride and groom never showed up, according to the complaint. The witness "left Las Vegas with Daniels, knowing Daniels didn't make good on the wedding — essentially stealing Barrette's money," the complaint said.

Another witness told investigators he got a telephone call from Daniels shortly before she died. She said she was at a Minneapolis hotel with the man from "that situation in Las Vegas" and that he had a gun to her head.

Daniels asked the witness to send her $4,000, but he hung up on her because he thought she might be trying to steal from him.

At about 6:30 p.m., about 2 1/2 hours later, police responded to Daniels' room and found signs of a struggle, including large chunks of blond hair like Daniels' and a broken cell phone. The complaint does not indicate what prompted police to go to the room.

Daniels' uncle and godfather, Gary Schafer of Charlevoix, Mich., said he couldn't believe his niece was a professional escort.

"I certainly had people come up to me during the funeral who said they had Alison go to church with them and had received the Lord, things like that," he said.

Daniels became a beautician after graduating from Haslett High School near Lansing in 2000, Schafer said. She was a studying for a new career as an ultrasound technician when she died, he said.

"She loved helping people and she loved being around people," he said.

Well, this sounds like a bit much but I can't muster any shred of sympathy for Vick and hope he continues to be the target of any number of problems.  I can't think of anybody more deserving at the moment.

Breaking news report :

Quakes rock Peruvian capital

Article from: NEWS.com.au..By Reuters and staff writers..August 16, 2007 11:12am

TWO powerful earthquakes within minutes of each other struck Peru today shaking buildings in its Pacific coast capital and cutting power in some areas.

A tsunami warning was issued for Ecuador, Chile and Colombia , said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii.

The first quake, with a magnitude of 7.7, hit about 30km west of Chincha Alta, at a shallow 18km from the earth's surface, the US Geological Survey said.

It said the second had a magnitude of 7.5.

Workers ran into the streets in fear as office buildings in Lima shook in at least two different bouts that lasted around 20 seconds each, witnesses said.

Authorities in Australia said there was no danger to the east coast here.

Geoscience Australia seismologist Clive Collins said although today's quake was large, it would have to have a magnitude in the high eights to travel across the Pacific.
