Fugitive Chimp Shot Dead At English Zoo
Zoo Says Killing Escape Animal Is Standard Procedure

AP) A runaway chimp was shot dead after breaking out of his enclosure at an English zoo, his keepers said.

Chimpanzees Jonnie and Coco broke out of their compound Friday at the Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, about 35 miles north of London. The Zoological Society of London, which runs the zoo, said Coco was recaptured, but Jonnie could not immediately be caught and had to be killed.

Jonnie was still in the zoo at the time he was shot, said Christine Drabwell, a press officer at the Whipsnade Zoo. Officials declined to say how long he'd been free, saying an investigation was pending.

"It's just standard procedure, if the animal cannot be quickly and safely recaptured it will be shot," ZSL spokeswoman Alice Henchley said.

When asked why the chimps weren't shot with a tranquilizer gun or in another non-lethal manner, a zoo spokeswoman said that under their procedures, they have to shoot to kill when they have an animal who might be of danger to the public.
 It's just standard procedure, if the animal cannot be quickly and safely recaptured it will be shot.

"We can't be sure with a tranquilizer," said the spokeswoman for the zoo who spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with the organization's policy. "It doesn't work quickly enough."

Jonnie, an adult male, was gunned down by the zoo's specially trained firearms squad, Henchley said. She added that Jonnie and Coco's keepers were still trying to figure out how the apes escaped.

I hate seeing any animal killed anywhere for any reason..Especially when it's a human problem and not theres!! That ZOO has a very @#$@$@% procedure!! Why the hell wouldnt you use a tranquilizer?? Wait it out until the chimp is out cold!!!!

Alright who got me addicted to that John Secada song  I should be listening to my hard rock preparing myself for MNF

Tonight's 6PM WCIA news broadcast said that the body could be identified as early as tomorrow. The remains were found in a shallow grave in some woods next to a creek (Two Mile Slough) that runs through corn fields south of Sadorus.

OLDF The estimates were from between $400.00 to $700.00-we checked more places than the rental car place.  The problem was, the ignition key had a computer chip in it and it also acted as the keyless entry/remote.  The deal was to replace the ignition.   Plus, we live out in the boonies.  They probably would have added some charge to that.  DH said something about some places didn't have the software, what ever that meant.  I let him do the calling around and etc. I think if just a key could be made, the prices started at $140.00, but there was some problem with that too.  The folks locally couldn't do it.  We checked larger, nearby towns.  Just don't lose the keys...

Maybe you need to buy DH one of those key things that clip on and have a cord that pulls out and rewinds... for when HE  rents a car   as a XMAS  present ...
