Many offenders in child sex cases avoid prison
10/22/2007 3:11 PM
By: Associated Press

DALLAS -- Many Texas offenders sentenced in the most heinous of child sex crimes initially receive no prison time at all.

That's the finding in an analysis published in Sunday's Dallas Morning News, which comes despite new get-tough Texas laws aimed at harshly punishing child rapists.

The newspaper found that in 13,000 cases involving aggravated sexual assault of a child since 1991, four of every 10 sentenced offenders received deferred adjudication.

When an offender was sent to prison, less than one in five got 25 years or longer.

Under stricter sentencing laws passed in Texas this year, prosecutors can seek the death penalty for some repeat child rapists.

But experts say that dealing harshly with sex offenders isn't as easy as it seems.

One reason: Federal statistics show that 93 percent of juvenile sexual assault victims know their perpetrator, and parents are often reluctant to take a relative or friend to trial.

Some victims' advocates say that while the new legislation may be politically popular, it doesn't attack the root of the problem.

Monkeys
Was just checking to see if Shell had gotten to some place safe and what else was going on.

I see CBB found a different link for the Hang Man Game...  Why that one would not work for her

Looking for updates on the fires.  Saw troops have been called out.  I guess that is to assist in evacuations.

Klaas, with some of these being arson, you never know what can happen.  Maybe you should pack a toothbrush and undies just in case something should happen near you.  Also any meds you and hubby must have.  Just in case.  Surely they will get it under control but always better to be prepared.

I've been watching the news about the fires and thinking of the CA monkeys with prayers.  I see Shell had to evacuate and glad to see your safe Klaas.  Any word from IBE and how she is?

All CA Monkeys, please keep us all posted.  We've been getting alot of rain here, wishing I could send it to those who need it too!

Prayers to all!

I actually have everything ready just in case.  I think we'll be fine though.  The winds have died down alot now and have changed direction a bit too.

Thank you, I am fine.

Klaas Ch 9 gave a coverage of the fire and he was in San Diego Co along with Malibu and other places.

Troops might be for protection of property while evacuated; I don't know.

Klaas, CBB... Hey!

I wanted to say thank you for my new avatar.   I don't know how it
evolved and don't really care because all I can say is, "I LOVE IT!"

I spent the day with my grandson and went from listening to Sting
to 2-Pac, all in a day of fun.

I love you all and always will .... Thank you.
