I am close to the Bandy canyon/San Pasqual Valley that the mayor of San Diego refered to tonight. They did the reverse 911 to notify us to prepare for evacuation and to stand by. We are packed and ready to go if we need to. The road from Bandy canyon was soldid cars for a while. We live over that hill.

Can you see the fire from your home? Must be so scary.  I'm not even sure what I'd pack.  I'd probably just take my purse and dogs.

Shell

Sanders, Jarman describe San Pasqual Valley threat
12:12 a.m.
As many as 250 homes in the San Diego region of the San Pasqual Valley were under mandatory evacuation.
Fire officials said in an 11 p.m. news conference that they fear the fire will spread into the region by 2 a.m.

"This is a very quickly evolving situation," said Mayor Jerry Sanders.

Fire Chief Tracy Jarman said the Witch fire has two heads. One head is moving south toward Poway. It is moving slower than the northern head which is spreading toward San Pasqual Valley outside Escondido.

Brian Maienschein said the valley has green brush and officials are hoping that it will help slow the progression of the fire.

Jarman said winds are very strong. And "it's causing the fire to move quicker than we anticipated."

Officials have requested 100 strike teams from outside the area to help battle the flames.

Residents were urged to use caution, listen to police officers, obey their orders and not panic.

At least 350 evacuees were registered at Steele Canyon High School in Jamul. Evacuees were being calmed by volunteers who gave them chocolate cakes, water and Tylenol.

In one corner, several evacuees gathered around a television to get information on the fire and their homes. Dozens others slept on cots in the school's gymnasium.

San Diego residents who want information on evacuation centers can call (619) 570-1070.

Lots of smoke all day, could not see the valley, red and black sky towards Julian  and smoke all the way to Rancho Bernardo.
Packing clothes, meds, and important papers. My pictures are not together, I have them stored in various places. I have high hopes it will not actually come here and destroy my home. Besides, I can't physically handle moving what needs to be moved. We can't go to sleep because they might give us the evacuate order at any time.

Good morning Monkeys  sunny  We have wet, colder weather here this morning, with the high to be in the low 50's.  I wish I could share some of the rain here with those areas that need it so desperately.  I hope Shell is alright this morning and  that the fire has spared her home.  We had extreme drought too here in Texas for a number of years, until we got a lot of rain this past year , which has replenished our lakes and reservoirs.  There are winds predicted here today up to 45 mph. I think I will take my son to school in the Suburban this morning, instead of the small Scion XB.  Both are slab sided and can be difficult in the winds, but at least the Suburban has more weight.  Hope all Monkeys stay safe today, and hope Shell can check is and let us know how she is.

OMG! Shell had to evacuate!

Klaas..........this is so foreign to me and it frightens me. How much threat is her home in to get that call? Traffic wouldn't keep her from being able to get away, right? They give it plenty of time in the evacuation plan, I'm sure. Where will she go? Are there places to go for folks with pets? Wouldn't all the Hotels be full in mass evacuation situations?

Is there anything we can do? I'm going to go pray for Shell and her family and her house. I don't have a clue if she has pets, but God does and I'm including critters knowing He'll understand my intentions....

Ooops! Almost forgot, Patti! You look marvelous! (and no, it's no problem getting rid of a background color!) I LOVE what you found!  Wink

Actually I found Patti's new avatar when I couldn't sleep last night. Wink

SHELL's home is in a great deal of danger.  Hopefully the fire department will save homes.

Just saw on local TV, the fire in the Irvine area is arson.  Makes me so mad.  You should see the sky here, nothing but smoke and I'm not near a fire.  It's horrible.

The fire in Irvine is arson?!    That is really warped.  Sick.  I hope the person/persons responsible are found and punished.  Not that it changes anything as far as those that lose their homes, cars, pets and possibly their lives, but I wouldn't want someone to get away with it.  Sad

Yes, the fire in Irvine is arson and was started in 3 locations.  The one in Malibu I believe was do to downed power lines.  Not sure about San Diego county.

To be honest, the hills are so dry everywhere in Southern California it doesn't take alot to get them started.

"The situation has gotten dramatically worse overnight -- worse than many of us could have imagined just a few short hours ago," said Bill Metcalf, a fire chief in San Diego County.

"We've been unable to do any suppression effort because, in most cases, the fire resources are being used ... to do rescues," said Metcalf, chief of the North County Fire Protection District in Fallbrook.

Arson? Oooooh, it wouldn't do for me to be on a jury if they catch whoever did that.

Klaas, I've been trying to make this suitable for an alternate to the Natalee Case Discussion Thread first page. Here it is if you should want it:

Calif. fires force 250,000 to evacuate
By ALLISON HOFFMAN and GILLIAN FLACCUS, Associated Press Writers
 24 minutes ago

Wildfires fanned by fierce desert winds forced the evacuations of nearly 250,000 people Monday in San Diego County, including hundreds who were being moved by school bus and ambulance from a hospital and nursing homes.

More than a dozen wildfires had engulfed Southern California, killing at least one person, injuring dozens more and threatening scores of structures.

"We have more houses burning than we have people and engine companies to fight them," San Diego Fire Captain Lisa Blake said. "A lot of people are going to lose their homes today."

About a dozen blazes erupted over the weekend, feeding on drought-parched land from the high desert to the Pacific Ocean. One person was killed and several injured in a fire near the Mexican border, and dozens of structures have burned across the region.

Warm temperatures and strong winds created "dramatically worse" conditions overnight as flames shot 200 feet high, said Bill Metcalf, chief of the North County Fire Protection District. Some of the worst damage was in Malibu, where a church, homes and a historic castle were destroyed.

In Orange County, a 1,049-inmate jail was being evacuated because of heavy smoke, sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said. Inmates were being bused to another facility in Irvine.

All San Diego Police Department officers and off duty detectives were ordered to return to work to help with evacuations.

The fires have burned about 100,000 acres in San Diego County, said county Supervisor Ron Roberts. Across the region, 40,000 acres — or 62 square miles — had burned by Sunday.

"This is a major emergency," Roberts said.

In many cases, crews couldn't begin to fight the fires because they were too busy rescuing residents who refused to leave, fire officials said.

"They didn't evacuate at all, or delayed until it was too late," Metcalf said. "And those folks who are making those decisions are actually stripping fire resources."

More than a dozen people were being treated at the UC San Diego Medical Center Regional Burn Center for burns and smoke inhalation, including four fighters — three in critical condition, officials said. Some of the injured were hikers, and others may be illegal immigrants.

One blaze devoured more than 5,000 acres in northern San Diego County and forced the evacuation of the community of Ramona, which has a population of about 36,000. Several structures were burned on the edge of town and sheriff's deputies called residents to alert them the fire was approaching the city, San Diego sheriff's Lt. Phil Brust said.

"The winds are up, it's very, very dangerous conditions," San Diego County spokeswoman Lesley Kirk said. "Fires are popping up all over the place."

Qualcomm Stadium, home to the NFL's Chargers, was added to a growing list of evacuation centers.

The fires were being fueled by stronger than usual Santa Ana winds roaring out of the region's canyons, scientists said Monday. The powerful, dry winds typically blow between October and February and peak in December.

Typically, Santa Ana conditions last about a day, but the ones that flared up over the weekend were expected to last through Tuesday.

"For it to be this strong for so many days is unusual," said Stuart Seto, a weather specialist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

In Saugus, north of Los Angeles, resident Senorina De La Torre said smoke from the fire poured through Lilly of the Valley mobile home park Sunday, prompting police to order her to leave her trailer.

"We couldn't breathe," she said.

She rushed to get her passports, bank statements and other important papers before fleeing.

"I haven't been able to go back to my house since yesterday, so I don't know if it's still there or not," she said.

I'm fine, no fires near us just alot of smoke and soot in the air.

Down in San Diego county they have evacuated over 250,000 now.  I'm a little upset all they show on TV is Malibu, it appears to be much worse down in San Diego County.
