What did happened with Carrie Culberson?

On Wednesday, August 28, 1996, at around 11:30 p.m.,  Clarissa Ann Culberson, (a.k.a., Carrie Culberson) arrived home from a volley ball game with her friends in Blanchester, Ohio. By all accounts, Carrie Culberson then vanished into thin air. Carrie's mother, Debra Culberson wakes up the next morning of Thursday, August 29, 1996 to find that Carrie's bed had not been slept in from the night before and her 1989 Red Honda CRX was also missing from the driveway. Alarmed, Debra contacts Carrie's friends and begins a search of Carrie's whereabouts. To no avail, Ms. Culberson is unable to find her daughter. During the course of August 29, 1996, Ms. Culberson would speak with Carrie's on and off again boyfriend of two years, (3)  three times that day in which he would change his account of when he last saw Carrie Culberson. Carrie Culberson had dated Vincent Doan for two years, and this relationship caused much concern of those closest to Carrie. Many would describe the relationship as volatile and witnessed Carrie's abuse at the hands of Mr. Doan. Less than a month before Carrie disappeared, she had sustained an injury to her head causing her to need (5) staples to close the cut from where she had been hit in the head with a space heater thrown by Vincent Doan. Carrie had pending assault charges from this past altercation as well.
After days passed without Carrie's return, suspicion would begin to focus on none other than Vincent Doan. Shortly after, witnesses would come forward to say that they witnessed Doan fighting with Carrie Culberson the night she disappeared. The sister-in-law of Vincent Doan would come forward to say that Vincent Doan arrived the same night Carrie Culberson disappeared covered with blood asking for his brother Tracey Baker. The searches continued for Carrie Culberson and ended up with neither Carrie or her vehicle. Charges of aggravated kidnapping and murder would fall onto Vincent Doan. As many witnesses came forth to say that they witnessed Carrie Culberson and Vincent Doan in what was believed to be the final violent altercation between the couple, many would come forward to say that they had seen Carrie Culberson in various areas in her CRX. Although none of the eye witness accounts panned out, the trial would move forward with Vincent Doan. Many would speculate that the eye witness accounts were none other than the new girlfriend, Shannon Hodson that Vincent Doan moved into his residence less than two weeks after Carrie disappeared. Ms. Hodson bore an almost identical resemblance to Carrie Culberson as was even not allowed in the court room at certain times because of the eerie similarities. Vincent Doan's defense team would contend that Carrie packed up and left town and that Doan's sister-in-law was simply a jilted lover, because she had a previous affair with Vincent Doan. Those closest to Carrie Culberson and the prosecution felt otherwise. Carrie had met Vincent Doan through a friend while he was incarcerated for an attempted murder charge against his then best friend. Vincent Doan had shot his friend in the face for having an affair with his girlfriend. The charges were later dropped to a misdemeanor and Vincent was released to begin a relationship with Carrie Culberson.
The speculation that Vincent Doan was obsessed with Carrie Culberson and then it later drove him to her murder would now be in the hands of the jury. Almost a year to the date of Carrie's disappearance, the jury found Vincent Doan guilty of the murder of Carrie Culberson. Vincent Doan was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Charges would later be filed against Doan's half brother, Tracey Baker, Doan's father, & Lawrence Baker for assisting in destroying evidence and discarding Carrie's body and car. Tracey Baker is serving an eight year sentence for evidence tampering and will be out on parole in June of 2005. Lawerence Baker was acquitted of his charges due to lack of evidence.
Sadly this would not be the end of the mystery of Carrie Culberson. Shortly after, the police chief, Richard Payton of the Blanchester Police force was also charged in his role in allowing the junkyard pond to not be secured the night after cadaver sniffing dogs picked up what was believed to be Carrie Culberson's scent, allowing someone to remove the contents before it was drained the next day. Payton plead no contest to charges of mishandling of the case and mishandling valuable evidence. He was fired from his job.
The family of Carrie Culberson sued and won a civil suit against the City of Blanchester, Ohio. They contended that due to the mishandling of the evidence, it robbed them of having Carrie's retrievable remains back. With those responsible behind bars, Carrie Culberson and her 89 Red Honda CRX are still currently missing. This website was created to make those aware of the dangers of domestic violence and to keep the world aware that we are still searching for Carrie.
Anyone who is searching for more information on Carrie should be read all the witness testimony and newspaper article links we have provided. Carrie was taken away and what happened was wrong. This website is the voice of a young woman who put her trust in some people who violated her as a human being. Carrie Culberson is still missing, but she is not forgotten. We will look for her until she is brought back.
Please read over all the information on this site about Carrie Culberson. Somebody has to stand up and have the voice for those who can no longer speak and that is what the purpose of Carrie' site is for. Thanks to all who took the time to search for Carrie online and came here as a result.

Carrie Culberson

Carrie Culberson with her car, that is missing still also

Carrie Culberson her mother and sister

In which part of this is to find the suspect(s) and her body with car?
When is the right to remain silent for the witness over? Maybe 2008?
And have God this in this hands? And decides when there an opening comes in this mystery?

Court TV commissions Culberson documentary

Brenz Salon and Day Spa in Wilmington served as the setting for a scene in a Court TV documentary on the Carrie Culberson investigation Thursday.

Brenda Mahoney, owner of the salon, said she received a phone call last week asking permission to use Brenz as a "host" location for a scene in the documentary.

Carrie Ann Culberson, formerly of Blanchester, disappeared on Aug. 28, 1996. Her body was never found, but on March 27, 1997, a Clinton County grand jury indicted her boyfriend, Vincent Doan, on four charges of kidnapping. On Nov. 17, 1997, Judge William McCracken officially sentenced Doan for Culberson's murder.

Culberson was employed as a nail technician in Wilmington at G & G Hair Studio. The salon is no longer in operation.

Libby Sallaway, an employee of Story House Productions (the production company Court TV is using to produce the documentary), said Brenz will be used as a backdrop location for a re-enactment scene of the investigation. The scene depicts Det. Brian Edwards of the Clinton County Sheriff's Department entering the salon to ask questions about Culberson's disappearance. Appearing in the scene is Mallory Minton of Lynchburg, who plays the receptionist, Mahoney and Sarah Arnold of Dayton and Jeanine Anderson of Russelville, who both act the role of Culberson's salon "friends."

Sallaway said the documentary would be used for a Court TV segment called "Missing Persons Unit."

Story House Productions, a production company based in Washington, D.C., will be filming in the area through today. The crew arrived last Monday.

"The Clinton County Sheriff's Department has been wonderful," said Sallaway. "We're really grateful for all the help we've received with this documentary."

Sallaway also mentioned she is very pleased with the assistance the production crew received from Massie Township Fire Department.

"They really helped a lot with the search scene we did at Caesar Creek," she said. "We're just really happy to tell the story of this investigation and the great people who helped it happen."

Culberson Slaying Case Could Be Reopened
Clinton Co. Man Convicted, Although Body Never Found

POSTED: 10:26 am EDT October 29, 2008

CINCINNATI -- Lawyers asked a three-judge panel Wednesday to reopen the case of a Clinton County man convicted of murder in the death of his girlfriend.

Vincent Doan was sentenced in 1997 to life in prison without the possibility of parole in the slaying of 22-year-old Carrie Culberson.

The Blanchester woman had disappeared Aug. 28, 1996, and prosecutors said that Doan kidnapped and killed her.

Culberson’s body was never recovered, and Doan’s attorneys argued during his original trial that she might still be alive because there is no concrete evidence that she is dead.

According to court records, Culberson filed assault charges against Doan following a violent dispute, and prosecutors also said Doan had a history of violence against Culberson, his girlfriend of two years.

Witnesses testified that the pair became involved in another violent dispute on the evening that Culberson disappeared.

Culberson’s family was awarded $3.75 million in a 2001 lawsuit filed against the village of Blanchester, after jurors faulted police for calling off a search for the missing woman’s body in a pond on land owned by Doan’s relatives.

Doan’s attorneys argued in federal court that authorities should re-examine the case, but no decision has been made.

Carrie Culberson's Mother Finds Peace 13 Years After Murder

Last Update: 10/21 2:43 pm

It's been 13 years since Carrie Culberson was killed by ex-boyfriend Vince Doan. Her mother, Debbie, has spent 13 years searching for where her daughter's body was hidden.

Debbie Culberson thought finding her daughter would give her peace. But as Local 12's Deborah Dixon tells us, she's found peace in an unlikely place.

"The search, the murder trial, the horror stories about Carrie being cut up with a chain saw, fed to hogs or buried under a barn, I never guessed I could have handled it."

Debbie thought she was handling it by staying in Blanchester where Carrie was last seen being beaten by Vincent Doan. She wanted to be a reminded that Carrie's body has never been found. She would sit on the front porch, see Vince's family, a relative lived across the street. "It's time for me to have some peace in my life. I've found it here."

Debbie has a new home, miles away from Blanchester. Inside are lots of pictures of her three grandchildren by daughter Christina. "Life left behind a lot of memories good and bad memories. I can leave the bad ones and carry the good ones here."

In Debbie's new life she is a powerful voice in Washington D.C. "I'm going to be leaving to go to national roundtable for Amber Alert invited by Justice Department."

She just returned from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and spent a week in D.C. with survivors such as John Walsh lobbying for new laws. "We were in D.C. lobbying for collection of DNA upon felony arrests rather than felony convictions. It's because of Carrie and for Carrie."

Debbie found out she doesn't need to be in Blanchester to get tips. Police get them too. Last year Clinton County dug up a well. Brown County drained one because of information received. Now, Debbie understands what daughter Christina told her years ago. "She said to me you need to let go of the dead and concentrate on the living."

Vince Doan's appeals have all been rejected. Debbie says if he would say where Carrie's body is - she would lobby prosecutors for his release. Doan is serving a life sentence
