Update

http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2007/10/fox-news-report.html

Update at 2:25 p.m. ET: CNN and Fox are reporting the 14-year-old shooter was killed.

Update at 2:34 p.m. ET: WKYC-TV, a fellow Gannett news outlet, has reporters at the scene and says  the gunman had two weapons. MetroHealth Medical Center confirms it has received three victims.

Update at 2:44 p.m. ET: Mayor Frank Jackson went to the scene and told reporters the school had been secured. “We have no reason to believe there’s more than one suspect,” he said.

Update at 2:50 p.m. ET: SuccessTech is located in the center of downtown across from the FBI’s offices and three blocks from where the Cleveland Browns play football, the AP said. The school enrolls students grades nine through 12 and emphasizes technology education.

Update at 3:05 p.m. ET: Mayor Jackson says two men and two male teen-agers were shot. Their ages are 14, 17, 42, and 57. In addition, a 14-year-old female hurt her knee during the incident, Jackson said. “They have the shooter,” he said, without elaborating.

WKYC-TV spoke with a student who says he knew the gunman.

"Screaming, gunshots, everything," the unidentified teenager tells the station in response to a question about what it was like inside the school. “He always came in talking about he worshiped the devil and all that. I didn’t think he actually meant all that. I just thought he was doing that because he was just trying to be popular,” the student tells the station’s reporter in between calls on his cellphone. “He said if he would shoot up the school he would let me and some other dude he knew go, and all that, but I didn’t think he actually meant it. I thought he was kidding around,” the boy says.

Update at 3:15 p.m. ET: WKYC has posted photos from the scene and reports the shooter was a freshman who had been suspended earlier this week. The station's reporters at the scene say they are being told by multiple sources that the gunman killed himself.

Update at 3:21 p.m. ET: The AP says police confirm the shooter is dead and appears to have killed himself.

Police Arrest Ohio Shooter's Brother

By JOE MILICIA
Associated Press Writer
CLEVELAND (AP) -- The brother of a high school student who shot and wounded four people before killing himself was led out of his home in handcuffs by police officers on Thursday, as family members looked on and called his name.

Officers placed Stephen Coon, 19, in the back of an unmarked car, then several officers went into the house. It was unclear why Coon was being taken into custody.

"Please have respect, I just lost my brother," Coon said as he was being escorted from the house.

Did anyone else see the video this morning of how this kid was beat up earlier? It truly startles me how kids are treating each other... and it's a sad commentary on society at large... or the hopelessness that kids feel that somehow the answer is to go on a killing spree....

Not that in anyway I condone any of it... just wondering aloud how we get through to these kids????

Mrs. Red, I don't condone students going back and shooting up the school because they were bullied either.  That said, some kids lives are living hell because of the way they are treated, that goes for boys and girls alike.  When my eldest son was being bullied by a bigger kid, I went to see the principal.  She suggested my son see the counselor for tips on bullying.  One second here.  Why not bring the bully in and have HIM talk to the counselor.  WHY is he bullying smaller kids.  To me, he is the one with the problem.  Get that bully's parents butts in there and find out what's going on with their kid.  They won't want to come in, because it isn't their kid on the receiving end.  Yes, I went over tips for bullying with my son, but I also stayed on top of the other kid that was doing the bullying.  A lot of other kids had gone through being bullied by him too it came out and those kids would join in or face his bullying more.  It perpetuates.  What a sad life for some kids, day after day.  Being pushed around, taunted, teased.  and threatened.

Investigators seek motive for Ohio school shooting
By Emily Bazar and Marisol Bello, USA TODAY
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-10-10-school-shooting_N.htm?csp=34
CLEVELAND — As school officials in Cleveland revise their security plans after a shooting rampage by a 14-year-old gunman, professionals who study youth violence said the solution is simple: Pay attention to threatening behavior and talk.

A week before Asa Coon wounded four people and fatally shot himself at SuccessTech Academy in downtown Cleveland on Wednesday, he had threatened to blow up the school and stab students, said Doneisha LeVert, 14.

School Shooting Prompts Security Review

By JOE MILICIA
Associated Press Writer

CLEVELAND (AP) -- School officials were trying to determine how a suspended student who shot four before killing himself was able to enter his school while carrying two guns - all while 26 security cameras were keeping watch.
(snipped)
Students said metal detectors were intermittently used, but none was operating Wednesday, two days after Coon had been suspended.

McGrath, asked how Coon got past an armed security guard, said he could not comment. He said police consult with school officials on where to locate metal detectors, based in part on crime in schools.

Police found the two guns, .22- and .38-caliber revolvers, a box of ammunition for each and three tactical folding knives, all on or near Coon's body, the police chief said.

McGrath said the guns are older, meaning it will take some time to trace them. He said officials would be talking to Coon's older brother and mother about the weapons.

His older brother, Stephen, was arrested at the family home Thursday on parole violations, said state prisons spokeswoman JoEllen Lyons. She said the arrest was not connected to Wednesday's shooting.

Burns witnessed Coon's troubles with fellow students, recalling an instance in which a child dropped a book on his head and he did nothing. She also remembered verbal abuse over his shabby, at times unclean, appearance.

"They picked on him," Burns said Thursday. "He didn't have decent clothing. He didn't have decent shoes. He had problems. The other children played on that and tormented him at school."

Ohio School Reopens After Shootings

By M.R. KROPKO
Associated Press Writer
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/S/SCHOOL_SHOOTING?SITE=FLTAM&SECTION=US

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Onlookers cheered Tuesday as students filed calmly into their high school for the first time since an armed classmate opened fire last week, wounding four people before killing himself.

The students filed through a newly installed metal detector and sent their backpacks through a scanner.

"I'm excited. Worried? Not at all," said senior Jasmine Lawrence, 17. "I always feel safe here. About the incident that happened Wednesday, I was scared that day, but I feel that was just one person out of everyone who goes here."

Only 15 students were reported absent at SuccessTech Academy with an enrollment of about 250, said Ben Holbert, school district spokesman.

"We're confident everything is going to be OK," said Kim Middlebrooks, a parent who brought her 16-year-old daughter to school. "This is a very close-knit school."

Mayor Frank Jackson said the purpose of the community greeting, which also involved clergy, was to show students and staff members that there is concern for safety in the schools.

He said he has discussed with schools' officials the need to better identify troubled students and give them the help they need. "That is a greater security measure to me than all the metal detectors and security guards you can have," he said.
