~WE LOVE YOU PEACHES~

« on: October 20, 2007, 09:58:25 AM »

At the risk of looking like a dork, I am going to admit to loving polka music.  It's another one of the midwestern things I guess.  When you grow up around Germans, Danes, Czech, Polish, etc., you are exposed to many wonderful things.  Food is outstanding. Kolaches at the Wilbur Czech Festival.  When I think music in the midwest, I think POLKA!  All the best weddings and parties of any kind had a polka band.

I found this clip of the Beer Barrel Polka, a standard if ever there was one.  The band seems to be having a grand time.

I see people reading without comment.

Nice.  Go ahead.  Keep your polka proclivities to yourself.  I don't mind.

I'll just go on my merry way  humming "Roll Out the Barrell".

hehe.  I was humming "Roll Out the Barrell" myself.  I had been doing some research, looking for some polka songs I've enjoyed.  I lived in an area in South Texas for a while when I was in high school and a lot of the kids used to go over to Moravian Hall and and dance country western, polkas ,the schottische and such, and I was looking up some of those songs.  Al Dean and his All Stars played... Smile  We had a lot of fun.  New Braunfels is not far from my home, and they have an annual  10 day Wurstfest.  (complete with sqeezeboxes and lederhosen, and tubas.  So everyone round here can get their polka fix Smile

When I read this topic it was like a visit from my grandmother... she loved, loved polka!!  I secretly like it...  Shocked Shocked Shocked
but I think it's just a sentimental thing...

funny thing is my grandmother was so very strict with us grandkids that I was the only one that remembered this until my dad died and we were all talking about her.... I was mentioning the fact that she would play polka on the record player all day... surprised the three oldest but not my younger brother.. anyway, all the rambling aside... I am so glad that you took me down this memory lane trip!

Muffy, do you realize that you are geographically close enough to have a chance to see Asleep At The Wheel and Sunny Sweeney on New Years Eve in New Braunfels?

I am simply ILL that I don't live closer to that show.

More fun Polka Floyd stuff.  Live in Hamtramck, wherever that is.

I'm surprised Angie hasn't pooped in here.... from a geographic standpoint.  I would bet polka is still rocking in PA.  Especially at weddings.

I have seen Asleep at the Wheel a number of times, but haven't seen Sunny Sweeney.  I have an Asleep at the Wheel cd in my car right now.   Laughing   One of the reasons I live in Texas is the live music and singer/songwriters.  I met my dh at a music festival in Kerrville, TX.  Not sure what I will be doing for New Years Eve yet... Smile  Lots of nice choices around  Smile

I am so jealous you have seen Asleep At The Wheel.  I've been listening to them for years.

Peaches ~  You may still get the chance to see Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel. You just never know... Smile  I've surely enjoyed hearing/seeing them.   Smile
