Stacy Peterson's Sister Wants Missing Mother Declared Legally Dead
Tuesday, Jul 29, 2014 • Updated at 12:19 PM CDT

The sister of Stacy Peterson, the Bolingbrook mother of two who vanished nearly seven years ago, said she plans to file paperwork with the state to have her sister declared legally dead.

"That way it's known that she didn't run off," Cassandra Cales recently told the Southtown Star, countering the contention long-made by Peterson's husband, Drew Peterson, that she ran off with another man in October 2007.

Stacy Peterson’s Family Won’t Have Her Declared Legally Dead After All
October 28, 2014 1:20 PM

CHICAGO (CBS) – Seven years ago Tuesday, Stacy Peterson disappeared from her home in Will County, never to be seen again, and her family said they are now reconsidering a decision to file papers to declare her legally dead.

“No, I don’t think it’s something that we’re considering at this point,” said Pamela Bosco, spokeswoman for Stacy Peterson’s family.

That’s a reversal from this summer, when Peterson’s sister, Cassandra Cales, told the Southtown Star the family would seek to have Peterson declared legally dead to emphasize the family’s belief Peterson did not run off, as her husband Drew Peterson has claimed.

Bosco said the family is concerned if Stacy Peterson were declared legally dead, Drew Peterson might be allowed to collect on her life insurance policy.

Stacy Peterson's sister continues search
October 28, 2014, 5:57 PM

Cassandra Cales on Tuesday searched for clues at a Will County Forest Preserve near Bolingbrook, seven years to the day that her sister Stacy Peterson disappeared..

Cales said she has conducted 10 to 15 volunteer searches this year and more than 100 since her older sister's disappearance.

While Tuesday's effort, which included about a dozen volunteers and cadaver dogs, didn't produce any results, Cales said she won't give up.

"I'm not going to stop until she's found," Cales said. "I will leave no stone unturned until I bring my sister home."

"The Peterson case has always remained active and continues to remain very active," ISP spokeswoman Monique Bond said, noting that investigators may not always be in contact with family over every lead they investigate.

It's good Stacy's family thought this out. Having her declared legally dead would emphasize the family's belief she didn't run off as Drew claimed, but could result in him collecting on her life insurance policy.  I believe her family has made it very clear they don't believe she ran off.  No need to have her declared, especially if Drew stood a chance to gain monetarily from this.  If it were one of my family members, I wouldn't want him to have a cent of her money.  JMHO

It's good to know the investigation remains active.  And Stacy's family are still looking for her even after all this time.     I hope Stacy can be brought home soon.

Stacy Peterson’s Sister Not Giving Up Search After 8 Years
October 29, 2015 2:27 PM

CHICAGO (CBS) — Eight years ago this week, Stacy Peterson disappeared from her home in Bolingbrook.

As her husband, former Bolingbrook police officer Drew Peterson, sat in prison for the murder of his previous wife, Kathleen Savio, Stacy’s sister marked another anniversary and said she’ll never give up the search.

Cales said she takes some comfort in knowing the man suspected in Stacy’s disappearance is in prison, even if he was never charged in connection with Stacy’s disappearance.

She makes the 300 mile trip to downstate Chester for his court appearances on charges he tried have prosecutor who put him in prison, Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow, killed.

“I like to go see him, and how miserable he is, and he won’t even look at me. He looks pretty unhealthy, and I don’t think he’s going to last much longer in there,” Cales said.

Inmate Testifies Drew Peterson Admitted Killing Missing Wife, Wanted Prosecutor Killed
The former police officer is accused of plotting to kill the prosecutor who put him behind bars for his third wife's death

By Charlie Wojciechowski and Associated Press

In an unexpected moment in court Monday, an inmate at the center of a murder-for-hire trial against Drew Peterson claimed the former suburban Chicago police officer, who was convicted in the murder of his third wife, admitted to also killing his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.

The statement came at the start of a trial on allegations Peterson tried to have the prosecutor who put him behind bars killed.

Stacy Peterson, the ex-Bolingbrook sergeant's 23-year-old fourth wife, disappeared in 2007, prompting authorities to reopen the investigation into the death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio.

While Drew Peterson has maintained his innocence, he remains a suspect in the young woman's disappearance and was convicted and sentenced to 38 years in prison for Savio's murder.

Drew Peterson found guilty in murder-for-hire plot

Published May 31, 2016

CHESTER, Ill. –  Jurors have found former suburban Chicago police officer Drew Peterson guilty of trying to hire someone to kill the prosecutor who helped convict him in his third wife's death.

Jurors reached the verdict Tuesday afternoon after deliberating for little more than an hour.

Peterson was accused of trying to hire a fellow inmate's uncle to kill Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow. Peterson is serving a 38-year sentence in ex-wife Kathleen Savio's death and faces up to 60 more years in prison.

Drew Peterson found guilty of trying to have prosecutor killed

Chicago Tribune

CHESTER, Ill. — Drew Peterson was found guilty Tuesday of trying to hire a hit man to kill the prosecutor who put him behind bars for murder. The jury deliberated for about an hour before finding Peterson guilty of solicitation of murder for hire and solicitation of murder.

The charges carry a prison sentence of up to 60 years.

Peterson sat hunched over, his head leaning on his left hand with his elbow on the defense table as the verdict was read by the judge. Peterson showed no visible reaction to the verdict. As Peterson left the courtroom, he glanced at Cassandra Cales — the sister of Peterson's missing wife, Stacy Peterson — and murmured something unintelligible.

Drew Peterson Trying to Get His Police Pension Back
August 3, 2016 5:17 pm ET

Just days after he was sentenced to 40 years for plotting the murder of the prosecutor who put him in prison for killing his third wife, disgraced Bolingbrook cop Drew Peterson tried to get his pension back.

Peterson’s attorney, Steve Greenberg, filed a petition for administrative review in Will County Court Tuesday.

The Bolingbrook Police Pension Board stripped Peterson of his retirement benefits in June. Peterson had put in nearly 30 years with the Bolingbrook police before retiring as a sergeant in 2007. He cashed in rather than face an internal investigation concerning the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.

Stacy Peterson remains missing. The Illinois State police did name Peterson a suspect in her “potential homicide” but have yet to charge him with harming her.

While Stacy Peterson's case was never solved, evidence gathered during the investigation prompted police and prosecutors to take another look at the death of Peterson’s third wife, Kathleen Savio.

The pension board determined Peterson “used his specialized police training, skills and abilities to plan and commit the murder” of Savio, according to the petition for administrative review.

Drew Peterson's son: Father 'probably' killed both wives
By Kate Thayer•Contact Reporter
Chicago Tribune
February 2, 2017, 8:30 AM

In an interview with the Tribune, and on a Lifetime cable network show that aired in January, Stephen revealed that he believes his father, a former Bolingbrook police sergeant, "probably" killed Savio. He further told the Tribune that he's come to believe his father also killed Stacy.

"Over time, you hear enough (from police). They can't all be full of s---," Stephen said. "I don't want to come out and say he did it ... but, I'm sure he did it."

Peterson, 37, said he doesn't know details of what might have happened to Stacy, and that his father still maintains his innocence to him. Drew Peterson has not been charged in connection with Stacy's disappearance.

Since Drew Peterson's arrest, Stephen lost his job as an Oak Brook police officer for failing to disclose details of interactions he had with his father after Stacy disappeared. His marriage ended, and he moved into the Bolingbrook home Drew and Stacy once shared. He is acting as guardian to Drew and Stacy's two children, now in middle school, and looked after Drew's two sons with Savio, who are now young adults

Last summer marked the end of Drew Peterson's pension payments, which Stephen said he had used to support the family after he lost his job in 2011. The day after Stephen Peterson learned that source of support would be cut off, he said he got a call from producers of the Lifetime show, "Monster in my Family."

"The time was right," he said.

Though he has declined interviews in the past, Peterson said he needed the $10,000 he received for doing the show, which also featured interviews with relatives of Savio and Stacy Peterson. The show focused on Drew Peterson's four marriages, his infidelity, Savio's death and the circumstances surrounding Stacy's disappearance.

Stacy Peterson's sister Cassandra Cales did not appear on the show but told the Tribune that Stephen Peterson has refused to let her see Stacy's children.

"Steve was on (the show) because he just wanted to portray himself as this good guy," Cales said. "He wants people to feel sorry for him."

Peterson doesn't dispute that he hasn't let Cales see Drew and Stacy's children, saying he doesn't "trust" Cales.

The Latest: Court upholds Drew Peterson’s murder conviction

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Latest on Drew Peterson’s murder conviction in the death of his third wife (all times local):

9:05 a.m.

The Illinois Supreme Court has upheld the murder conviction of former police officer Drew Peterson in the death of his third wife.

The high court ruled unanimously in an opinion released Thursday. It said that the use of hearsay testimony in Peterson’s 2012 trial for the death of Kathleen Savio did not violate Peterson’s cross-examination rights.

Savio’s body was found in a bathtub in 2004. The death was initially ruled accidental, but the case was reopened after the 2007 disappearance of Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.

Statements Stacy Peterson allegedly made to her pastor and others were used against Drew Peterson in the Savio case.

The 63-year-old Peterson was convicted last year of plotting to kill the prosecutor in the Savio case.

10 years later, Stacy Peterson's family hopes disappearance will be solved
Friday, October 27, 2017 06:02PM

WESTMONT, Ill. (WLS) -- Stacy Peterson disappeared 10 years ago. Her husband, Drew, is a suspect but was never charged. Now her family, friends and DuPage County prosecutors still hope her case will be solved.

Stacy Peterson's disappearance opened the door to a saga that made national tabloid headlines and resulted in the conviction of Drew Peterson for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. While the former Bolingbrook police sergeant is likely to spend the rest of his life in prison, Stacy's sister will never give up looking for her.

While Cassandra is determined to give Stacy a proper burial and prove to people that her sister didn't run off with another man, as Drew has alleged, Will County State's Attorney Jim Glasgow said he doesn't need to find Stacy's body to charge Drew with his fourth wife's murder. Glasgow said there is substantial evidence in the case. He is currently pursuing an avenue he hopes will be the key.

"I'm not going to say we are there, but we've got something we are pursuing that is not a waste of time, so I'm anxious to see us wrap it up as quickly as possible," Glasgow said.

Ten frustrating years later, Cassandra also remains hopeful.

"No, I won't give up. And I will bring her home," she said.

On Saturday, the exact 10th anniversary of Stacy's disappearance, Cassandra will be spending the day with a sonar search team looking for Stacy. She has conducted hundreds of volunteer searches since her sister disappeared.

On Sunday, Stacy's family will hold a celebration of life service and fundraiser in Stacy's memory. Proceeds will go to Team Watters Sonar Search and Recovery.

Sister: Drew Peterson Will Be Charged Soon With Stacy's Murder
On Wednesday night, Cassandra Cales declared that murder charges will be filed soon.
By John Ferak, Patch Staff  | Mar 16, 2018 12:02 pm ET | Updated Mar 16, 2018 4:29 pm ET

BOLINGBROOK, IL - On Wednesday night, the sister of Stacy Peterson posted a lengthy message on social media letting everyone know that criminal charges are nearing against the man suspected of killing Stacy and hiding her body back in October 2007, now more than 10 years ago. Cassandra Cales reminded her murdered sister's followers on Facebook that she has never stopped searching for her sister. "It has come time for me to share with the world what I know as I will no longer bite my tongue and wait.

"Why am I coming forward with this now? What is the rush? It is because the Will County State's Attorney and Illinois State Police are moving forward to charge Drew, in the near future and without her body, for the murder of my sister," she declared.

However, Cales' post was harshly critical of the police. She mentioned that "I have fought this fight for my sister as I trust very few. Law enforcement has never worked with me or kept me apprised of their so-called 'ongoing' investigation. I have to find out my information through a back channel of contacts and my own personal investigating ..."

On Friday morning, Patch reached out to the Will County State's Attorney's Office for comment. The office was aware of Cassandra Cales' comments on social media. State's Attorney James Glasgow's spokesman Chuck Pelkie said that Glasgow has consistently maintained that "he is looking at this case with an eye toward charging it."
