I've created a new thread for Drew's arrest.  Since this happens to be more about Kathleen than Stacy (for the moment).

http://scaredmonkeys.net/index.php?topic=5036.0

I've also changed the name of the forum to indicate it's actually about both women Stacy and Kathleen.

Body Found In Des Plaines River
CHICAGO
Illinois State police said a body was found Wednesday afternoon in the Des Plaines River near the Big Basin Marina.

The marina is near the Interstate 55 bridge over the river near Channahon.

CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports workers who found the body described it as a woman that was partially clothed. That is not yet confirmed.

There are also conflicting reports as to the amount of remains that were present.

Authorities have searched the same area in the past for Stacy Peterson, the missing fourth wife of Drew Peterson.

However, the remains have not been identified, and there is no reason to believe today's discovery is connected to the Peterson case.

.........so why bother to mention it??

Could be Lisa Stebic. Chicago Tribune says:

Authorities were working this afternoon to identify the badly decomposed body of a woman pulled from the Des Plaines River near Channahon.

Meanwhile, as investigators worked at the Big Basin Marina, where the body was discovered, the families of two missing suburban women were waiting for word on whether the discovery might yield some resolution in their relatives' disappearances.

"We've been called," said Pam Bosco, a spokeswoman for the family of Stacy Peterson, who disappeared from Bolingbrook in October 2007. "We're in contact by phone. We're just waiting to hear more information. For confirmation though, they said it's going to be a little bit of time.  Obviously we're anticipating that it could be anyone - you know, Lisa Stebic is missing too -- but we just want an answer of who this woman is."

Stebic's family also was aware of the grisly discovery and was waiting for word from Illinois State Police officials, who are conducting the investigation.

"We haven't heard anything from Illinois State Police -- yet," said Melanie Greenberg, a spokeswoman for Stebic's family. "But it could be anybody; there are several missing women. But the location is just south, not very far away. [If it is her], the overwhelming feeling would be relief that we found her and that there is resolution. And we'd finally be able to put her to rest."

Stebic was last seen in Plainfield in April 2007. Plainfield police investigators are in contact with state police investigators, said public information officer Jim Caliendo.

"We're just letting them do their thing -- at this point we're not sure if it's even connected with our case or not," he said. "If we do get that information, we'll send an investigator out."

A barge crew discovered the remains of a female Wednesday afternoon in the Des Plaines River prompting speculation that it could be one of two missing Will County women, Stacy Peterson or Lisa Stebic.

Witnesses said it was around 2 p.m. that a barge crew discovered the remains -- not an intact body -- near the south shore after spending the past four days clearing logs and debris, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The remains were found in the Big Basin Marina, located near the bridge on I-55 near the southwest suburb, an area where previous searches have been conducted in that area for both Peterson and Stebic.

I posted Stacy's thread in Lisa's and now here is Lisa's thread http://scaredmonkeys.net/index.php?topic=1133.100 ... for those who wish to go back and forth. I am finding this quite interesting...normally when a body/bodies are found in and around the Stacy/Lisa area, they are quick to say...NOT related to high profile case. Something is different this time....

DNA needed to identify woman's body
Comments

May 20, 2009

From Staff Reports
CHANNAHON TOWNSHIP — A barge crew discovered female human remains Wednesday afternoon in the Des Plaines River, prompting speculation that Stacy Peterson or Lisa Stebic may have been found.

Witnesses said it was around 2 p.m. that a barge crew discovered the remains — not an intact body — near the south shore after spending the past four days clearing logs and debris.

A source said the remains looked like that of a smallish female wearing underwear, but that DNA testing likely would be required for a positive ID.

State police have taken over the investigation and confirmed remains were found, but would not release any other information Wednesday evening.

Peterson's family called

Relatives of missing Bolingbrook mother Stacy Peterson said they've been contacted by state police, who told them a woman's body has been found in the river near Channahon, though the remains have not been identified.

"We don't know who it is," said Pam Bosco, a spokeswoman for Stacy Peterson's family. "We're just being patient right now. We're waiting."

She believes there won't be any definitive word Wednesday about the identity of the body.

And Bosco said relatives realize the remains could be those of another woman, possibly missing Plainfield resident Lisa Stebic or someone else.

Bosco said Stacy Peterson's family members just hope the remains can be identified so a family somewhere can learn the fate of a missing loved one.

"We just hope they can identify who it is," Bosco said.

Boating to scene

The cleanup crew made their grisly find approximately three-quarters of a mile west of the Interstate 55 bridge, near the Big Basin Marina.

The shore area is only accessible by boat, so investigators spent time shuttling down the river from the boat launch at the marina on the river's north side.

State police and Braidwood canine units were called to the scene. Channahon and Illinois conservation police were also assisting. State police said two investigators were in charge of the scene. A lead investigator for state police rode out and returned around 4 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., Will County Coroner Patrick K. O'Neil rode out to examine the body.

Fifteen minutes later, the Channahon Fire Department brought a boat to the landing as news helicopters circled overhead.

"There are human remains, but that is all that is known right now," police said.

A forensic team was called in to search the area at 5 p.m. and police said they might need lighting to continue the investigation as the sun went down.

Authorities were working this afternoon to identify the badly decomposed body of a woman found by the Des Plaines River near Channahon.

Obviously we're anticipating that it could be anyone -- you know, Lisa Stebic is missing too -- but we just want an answer of who this woman is."

Stebic's family also was aware of the discovery and was waiting for word from Illinois State Police officials, who are conducting the investigation.

According to Roy Taylor, who has been leading the water searches for Peterson's body in the area, a crew cleaning up the river found the body on the shore sometime this afternoon.

The manager of nearby Mugzy's Bar said the body was discovered about 3 p.m. by the Living Lands and Waters clean-up crew, which the bar had hired to clean part of the river.

"We saw the trooper flying into the parking lot, and the Living Lands and Waters boat was coming down the river and the trooper jumped in their boat," said Ben, who asked that his last name not be used.

Ben said the crew, which is based out of Moline, came about four days ago and he briefed them that searchers had been sifting through the waters, apparently looking for Stacy Peterson's body.

"I told them that we had a flood last September, it was the worst flood ever, it was knee-deep in the parking lot. I told them if you're going to find anything, it's probably going to be onshore, because of the flood," he said. "They'd be a big help and get some closure to this case if they came across something. I knew it was a long shot."

The body was not in the water, but was found in the brush on the shore, according to a state police source. Other bodies had been found in the area in the past, the source said, including the remains of the Vaughn family, which were found in a car on a frontage road near the Stevenson in Channahon Township in 2007.

"I found out through a friend. We're just hopeful, I'm so hopeful and I'm ecstatic," said Stacy Peterson's aunt, Candace Aikin, who lives near Los Angeles. "I'm hoping that it is Stacy. Our family really wants closure. Then we'll at least know what happened. We have so many unanswered questions and no closure is really hard.

Body found on Des Plaines River bank

Wednesday, May 20, 2009 | 11:00 PM  By Ben Bradley

May 20, 2009 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Police discovered skeletal remains on the Des Plaines River bank near rural Channahon on Wednesday afternoon.

While it's too soon to determine the identity, investigators who've been working on the disappearance cases of Stacy Peterson and Lisa Stebic were at the scene.

ABC7 learned the body was found within a mile of where a resident discovered a blue barrel.
The remains were found on the river bank and the barrel was found in the Des Plaines River near southwest suburban Channahon
.

The big question is who is it?
State Police removed the remains by boat five hours after a river clean-up crew came across the badly decomposed body along the side of the Des Plaines River.

"They said they found a body. Pretty hard to determine the gender but they think it was a female," said Ben, bar owner.

Just a few nights ago, this bar owner told the out of town river clean-up team how he and others had joined in the search for Stacey Peterson. Together they talked about how a fall flood may make scouring the shoreline again worthwhile.

"I said, keep your eyes open to look on shore and they said they would switch their efforts to shoreline efforts and they did and here we are four days later and they found something. So hopefully someone's family can get closure here," said Ben.

"We're not identifying whether it's male or female. It would be very premature to do that nor are we making any tempt to make an association with any current investigation. It would be very premature," said Master Sgt. Tom Burek, Illinois State Police.

Fairly quickly, forensics experts should be able to determine the person's height, body type and if it's a woman, whether she had children. Dental records and DNA will also be tested.

While it the remains could be those of virtually any missing person, for the families of missing mothers Stacey Peterson and Lisa Stebic, the discovery brings hope tinged with fear.

"It's quiet anticipation but we've been through this situation before so we've learned not to be too anxious about the situation," said Pam Bosco, Peterson family spokesman.

"The not knowing is what's worse. Frankly it would be such a relief if it was Lisa, just to know that we could put her to rest," said Melanie Greenberg, Lisa Stebic's cousin.

Resident sees blue barrel

About a mile downstream from where those remains were found there a blue barrel was found along the riverbank.
Chopper 7HD took pictures of it on Wednesday evening after a resident told ABC7 that she first saw the container on Sunday.

On Monday, Michelle Williams says she saw the barrel again and emailed a picture of it to police.
A blue barrel is of interest because Drew Peterson's stepbrother claims he helped Peterson remove a blue barrel from his home and feared it contained the body of Stacy Peterson.
"A blue barrel in a river -- I would think -- people would want to know about --especially the police," said Michelle Williams.
State police have searched for -- and found -- blue barrels on several different occasions. None has been linked to the case.

Peterson or Stebic Link
to Body?

Updated: Thursday, 21 May 2009, 7:17 AM CDT

Crest Hill - An autopsy is scheduled on badly decomposed human remains found in suburban Chicago on the banks of the Des Plaines River. Illinois State Police Sgt. Tom Burek says the Will County coroner will perform the autopsy this morning.

The discovery yesterday prompted speculation the remains were related to a couple of long-running, high-profile missing persons cases in Will County. Burek declined to say if the body was male or female.

He says he won't speculate about whether the remains belong to Stacy Peterson or Lisa Stebic, two missing Will County women whose cases have garnered national attention.

Peterson's husband, Drew Peterson, is scheduled to appear in court today on charges he killed his third wife, Kathleen Savio. Stebic was last seen in Plainfield in April 2007.

Body found stirs two missing-women cases
An autopsy will be performed today on the badly decomposed human remains found by a cleanup crew working Wednesday afternoon on the Des Plaines River.
Erika Slife and Alicia Fabbre Breaking News Center
May 21, 2009

CREST HILL, Ill. - An autopsy will be performed today on the badly decomposed human remains found by a cleanup crew working Wednesday afternoon on the Des Plaines River.

The key question: Is the body that of either the missing Stacy Peterson or Lisa Stebic? But authorities say there is no timetable for making a determination.

The remains--reportedly mainly bones--were found along the banks of the river near Channahon, just west of Interstate Highway 55, an area where searchers have looked for Peterson since she disappeared Oct. 28, 2007.

Speculation spread that the remains might also be those of Stebic, the Plainfield mother who disappeared in April 2007. Stacy Peterson's family was alerted to the discovery by state police.

Authorities would not discuss the condition of the remains, whether they were male or female, or if clothing was found on the body. Officials said there is no timetable as to when they will be able to make a positive identification.

WLS-Ch. 7 reported this morning that a plastic blue barrel was found by a resident within a mile of the remains, although authorities said there was no sign of one. Thomas Morphey, Drew Peterson's stepbrother, has told authorities that he helped Peterson carry a blue container out of the Peterson home the day she disappeared, and he believed the body of Stacy Peterson was inside it.

Drew Peterson is now in jail on murder charges in the 2004 death of his previous wife, Kathleen Savio. The former Bolingbrook police sergeant has pleaded not guilty. He has not been charged in connection with Stacy Peterson's disappearance, but has denied any responsibility there, too.

Investigators from many agencies remained at the riverbank late Wednesday searching for evidence.

The crew found the body around 2:30 p.m. in brush on the river shoreline, said the manager of Mugzy's Hideout, a bar in the Big Basin Marina.

"We've been called," said Pam Bosco, a spokeswoman for Stacy Peterson's family. "We're in contact by phone. We're just waiting to hear more information. For confirmation though, they said it's going to be a little bit of time."

Melanie Greenberg, a spokeswoman for Lisa Stebic's family, said: "If it is [her], the overwhelming feeling would be relief that we found her and that there is resolution."

Earlier in the day, the Will County state's attorney announced the special grand jury investigating the Peterson and Stebic cases had not returned indictments related to their disappearances.

Attorney Joel Brodsky visited Peterson in jail Wednesday night and appeared unfazed by the speculation the body could be Stacy's.

"I wish I had $10,000 for every time they pulled a body out of a river in the Chicago area," Brodsky said. "People will assume what they want to assume."
