STELLA, Mo. — Law officers and volunteers spent several hours Sunday searching in vain for a 9-year-old girl who disappeared from her home in Stella late Friday or early Saturday.

Rowan Ford was last seen inside her home at 777 Grove St. about 10:45 p.m. Friday, Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland said. She is the daughter of Colleen Spears and stepdaughter of David Spears, and is a fourth-grader at Stella Elementary School, Copeland said.

Investigators found no signs of a crime scene at the Spears residence, and no charges had been filed by Sunday night in the missing-person case, the sheriff said.

“But we have every reason to believe there is foul play involved,” Copeland said.

He said the girl’s mother left the house about 8:30 p.m. Friday to go to work at the Wal-Mart store in Purdy. She told investigators that her daughter was getting ready to go to bed at the time, the sheriff said.

Copeland said the stepfather and two of his male friends were with the girl at the home until they decided to go out together about 10:45 p.m. The stepfather told investigators that he looked in on the girl in her bedroom before leaving, and she was asleep.

David Spears did not return to the house until sometime around midnight, when one of his friends dropped him off, the sheriff said. Copeland said Spears told investigators that he did not check on Rowan again before going to bed.

The sheriff said the girl was discovered missing when her mother returned home from work about 9 a.m. Saturday.

“Her daughter didn’t greet her like she normally does,” Copeland said. “So she went to her room, and she wasn’t there.”

The mother then woke up the stepfather, and he told her he did not know where the girl was, the sheriff said. The stepfather later told the mother that Rowan might have half-awakened him during the night and mentioned something about going to a friend’s place, but he could not be certain because he is a sound sleeper, the sheriff said.

Copeland said the house apparently was left unlocked throughout the night. He said the Spearses spent the better part of Saturday looking for Rowan at various acquaintances’ places in the Stella area before reporting her missing to the Sheriff’s Department at 6:50 p.m.

Investigators canvassed Stella for witnesses who might have seen any suspicious people or vehicles during the night and came up empty, Copeland said. He said they also checked for registered sex offenders living in the vicinity and did not find any.

Law officers and volunteers combed some woods near the girl’s home Sunday on foot, horseback and all-terrain vehicles. A Missouri State Highway Patrol helicopter aided the search effort from above.

Sheriff believes foul play involved in girl's disappearance

STELLA, Mo. --Investigators believe foul play was involved in the disappearance of a 9-year-old girl who was last seen in her home late Friday or early Saturday.

Rowan Ford, a fourth-grader at Stella Elementary School, was getting ready for bed around 8:30 p.m. Friday when her mother, Colleen Spears, left for work at a Wal-Mart story in nearby Purdy, the mother told authorities.

Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland said the girl's stepfather, David Spears, was at home with the girl until he and two male friends decided to go out together around 10:45 p.m. David Spears told investigators that he looked in on the girl in her bedroom before leaving, and she was sleeping.

Copeland said no signs of a crime were found at the home, and no charges had been filed by Sunday night.

"But we have every reason to believe there is foul play involved," the sheriff said.

David Spears did not return home until around midnight, Copeland said, and Spears said he did not check on the girl before he went to bed.

The girl was not home when Colleen Spears returned home from work around 9 a.m. Saturday.

"Her daughter didn't greet her like she normally does," Copeland said. "So she went to her room, and she wasn't there."

When the mother woke up David Spears, he said he did not know where the girl was, Copeland said. Later, Spears told the mother that Rowan might have woken him up sometime during the night and said something about going to see a friend, but he wasn't sure.

Colleen and David Spears spent much of Saturday looking for Rowan and eventually reported her missing at 6:50 p.m., Copeland said.

Volunteers and law enforcement officers searched Sunday for the girl in woods near her home using a helicopter, horseback and all-terrain vehicles, but with no luck.

Copeland said Colleen Spears is in shock, but the stepfather has been "less than cooperative."

"She's very upset," Copeland said of the mother. "She's been very cooperative with us. She doesn't know where her little girl is."

The sheriff said David Spears later told investigators that he left home a second time during the night Rowan disappeared.

Spears called his mother sometime after 1 a.m. Saturday and asked to use her vehicle, Copeland said. She took it to him around 1:30 a.m., then stayed at his house while Spears used her vehicle for about 5 1/2 hours, the sheriff said.

Copeland declined to say what Spears told investigators he was doing with the vehicle.

12:49 p.m. Search continues for missing girl

Area residents are continuing their search today for Rowan Ford, 9, of Stella, who has been missing since Friday night.

“This is all just a terrible dream, a terrible nightmare, and I am going to wake up and she is going to be there,” said Colleen Spears, the girl’s mother. “There are other times where I think they are not going to find her, or they are going to find her and she is not going to be all right.”

Ford is the daughter of Spears and the stepdaughter of David Spears, and is a fourth-grader at Stella Elementary School.

Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland said today the FBI also has been contacted about the case.

I don't have a good feeling about this.....I know it is early but I don't like the sound of this.  I already don't like the step father......

FBI Joins Search For Missing Girl
Girl, 9, Disappears From Home

POSTED: 8:15 am CST November 5, 2007
UPDATED: 5:25 pm CST November 5, 2007

STELLA, Mo. -- The FBI has joined in the search for a 9-year-old girl who disappeared from her southwest Missouri home late Friday or early Saturday.

Rowan Ford, of Stella, was getting ready for bed around 8:30 p.m. Friday when her mother, Colleen Spears, left for work at a nearby Wal-Mart, authorities said.

The girl's stepfather, David Spears, told investigators that she was asleep when he looked in on her before going out with friends around 10:45 p.m., said Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland.

The girl was discovered missing when her mother returned home from work about 9 a.m. on Saturday, The Joplin Globe reported on its Web site.

"Her daughter didn’t greet her like she normally does," Copeland told the newspaper. "So she went to her room, and she wasn’t there."

The stepfather later told his wife that the girl might have said something about going to visit a friend while he was partially asleep, the sheriff told The Joplin Globe.

The Springfield News-Leader reported that David Spears later told authorities he'd borrowed his mother's vehicle for about five hours early Saturday morning.

Copeland didn't tell the newspaper what David Spears told investigators he was doing with the vehicle.

The house at 777 Grove St. was left unlocked throughout the night, the sheriff told the newspaper.

Search continues for missing girl

By Derek Spellman

dspellman@joplinglobe.com

STELLA, Mo. — For part of Monday, the seat of the vigil for Rowan Ford was a chair in front of her house, located at the crest of a slope in Stella.

It was here that Colleen Spears sometimes waited for word that her 9-year-old daughter, missing since late Friday or early Saturday, had been found. It was here that she kept watch for someone to come walking up the slope to tell her Rowan was all right.

The view of Stella from outside Spears’ home offers a view of much of Rowan’s world. Not far away is the home of the little fourth-grader’s best friend, the mother said. The two liked to ride their bikes on the nearby back roads that weave around the area’s wooded hills.

“I just want to know where she is,” Spears said Monday afternoon. “I just want to know she is safe. (Sometimes I think) this is all just a terrible dream, a terrible nightmare, and I am going to wake up and she is going to be there. There are other times where I think they are not going to find her, or they are going to find her and she is not going to be all right.”

Newton County authorities on Monday received additional resources to help with the search for Rowan. Officials say foul play is suspected, although no arrests have been made or charges filed.

Sheriff Ken Copeland said eight FBI agents had arrived Monday, and more should arrive today, along with forensic equipment. A helicopter outfitted with a thermal-imaging camera was to carry out a search from the air on Monday. Law-enforcement officers have been combing woods and fields on foot, horseback and all-terrain vehicles.

Investigators found no signs of a crime scene at the Spears residence at 777 Grove St.

Copeland has said David Spears, Rowan’s stepfather, had been “less than cooperative” and “deceitful” after he initially withheld some information from investigators. Copeland said authorities are reconstructing a timeline of David Spears’ activities late Friday night and early Saturday.

David Spears is staying with his parents. In a phone interview Monday with the Globe, he said he is innocent.

His absence from the search efforts, he said, has fueled rumors about whether he played a role in his stepdaughter’s disappearance.
David Spears said he was told by the Sheriff’s Department not to participate in the search. Colleen Spears also said her husband was asked by authorities not to participate.
The Globe’s efforts to confirm that with Copeland were unsuccessful.

David Spears said Rowan was his “whole world.”

“I want people to know that I am innocent,” he said. “I did not harm my daughter. I do not know where she is, and I pray that she is brought home safely. I would like to extend my gratitude to all those who have helped search and prayed for my daughter.”

Colleen Spears saw Rowan just before she left home at 8:30 p.m. Friday to go to work at the Wal-Mart store in Jane. David Spears and two of his male friends were with the girl at the home until they decided to go out together at about 10:45 p.m. The stepfather told investigators that he looked in on the girl in her bedroom before leaving, and she was asleep.

David Spears did not return to the house until sometime around midnight, when one of his friends dropped him off, the sheriff said. Copeland said Spears told investigators that he did not check on Rowan again before going to bed, although he later acknowledged to investigators that he left the home a second time.

Copeland said Spears made a phone call to his mother sometime after 1 a.m. Saturday and asked to use her vehicle. She took it to him about 1:30 a.m. and stayed at his house while he left in the vehicle for about 5 1/2 hours, the sheriff said. The stepgrandmother told investigators that she never checked on Rowan while she was there watching television in the living room.

Colleen Spears found the girl missing when she returned home from work at 9 a.m. Saturday. Authorities said the couple reported that they spent the day looking for Rowan at the homes of various acquaintances to which they thought she might have gone. The girl was not reported missing to authorities until 6:50 p.m. Saturday.

Asked about his leaving the girl alone Friday night in the house, David Spears said: “I can’t answer that, except to say it was a mistake. It was an unforgivably stupid mistake to leave the house.”

Asked about his differing accounts to the Sheriff’s Department, Spears said it was “stupid not to give the whole story” the first time. He said he initially withheld information because he was afraid authorities would suspect him because he had left Rowan alone.

He insisted that he has told authorities the truth.

He then said he would not have any further comment on the case or about his whereabouts late Friday and early Saturday until after Rowan is found.

Meanwhile, Stella residents and friends of the family continued with their own search for the girl, putting up posters with her picture.

Tanya Vest, superintendent of the East Newton School District, said the district brought additional staff and security Monday to Triway Elementary School in Stella. Counselors were available to talk to students, Vest said.

“Our main focus with the students is to stay positive,” she said.

Oh my goodness..the house was unlocked and they did not report her missing until 6.50PM on Saturday!

It does sound like the step-father may have done something to her. How many times have we seen this same scenario? Boyfriend, stepfather, child missing from bed...
I'm just sick.

Video NEOSHO, Mo. -- Monday was the third day of the Newton County Sheriff's Department’s search for Rowan Ford, a 9-year-old girl last seen late Friday night at her home in Stella. The sheriff believes foul play is involved.

State and federal investigators have joined the investigation, which now stretches into nearby counties. Monday night, a car was impounded while authorities searched for forensic evidence.Rowan is fourth-grader at Stella Elementary School. Read on another site that they asked the mother what clothes were missing and there are some-jeans and shirt. You would think that if she was in bed she would have pajamas on. This does not look good at all Sad

So did the stepfathers' mother check on the girl?  I mean was she there when the step-grandma came over?  Because whenever a friend or family member needs me to watch their kid(s), if the child(ren) is asleep, I always open the door a crack just so I can look in on them and make sure they are fine.  Also to make them go to bed in case they are trying to play or whatever.  I am curious about that.  I totally think this man has something to do with it as why else would his story be so lame?  And why would he not have told LE the actual story unless he has something to hide?  Most people don't leave out accounts of where they have been unless they are trying to hide something.  IMO.  I guess he could've been out to see another woman and maybe that's why he didn't fess up to being gone twice?  I don't know.  Need to wait for more info, but I do feel that the stepfather is full of it and if he didn't do something to her, then maybe his buddies did.  ???

Search continues for missing girl

— Jeff Lanza, special agent for the Federal Bureau Investigation, said today the ground search is focused on three areas and they are interviewing a number of people as they continue to look for Rowan Ford, age 9.
Searchers were scouring a wooded area south of Rowan’s House this afternoon.
She has been missing since late Friday night or early Saturday morning.
“Right now we go where the evidence takes us,” Lanza said. “We are in it for the long haul.”
Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland said today no suspect has been identified yet, but he thinks Rowan’s disappearance is the result of foul play.

Missouri Girl, 9, Vanishes From Home
Wednesday, November 07, 2007

By MARCUS KABEL, Associated Press Writer

STELLA, Mo. —  The search for a 9-year-old girl who was reported missing after she was left home alone stretched across the rugged Ozarks countryside Wednesday, and the sheriff said he suspects foul play.

Colleen Spears returned home early Saturday from a night shift at a Wal-Mart in a nearby town and discovered that her daughter, Rowan Ford, was gone. The girl's stepfather, David Spears, told investigators he and two male friends were with Rowan until they went out around 10:45 p.m.

He returned home around midnight but did not check on the girl, Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland said.

David Spears later acknowledged that he called his mother sometime after 1 a.m. Saturday and asked to use her vehicle. She took it to him about half an hour later, then stayed at his house while her son left for about 5 1/2 hours, Copeland said.

Copeland said Wednesday that David Spears has not explained what he did in those hours. "We would very much like to know where that time was spent," the sheriff said.

David Spears, who has said he did not harm his stepdaughter, said it was wrong for him to have left the girl alone.

Copeland has said he believes foul play was involved, but he has not elaborated. No charges have been filed, and nobody is in custody, Copeland said.

About 75 officers and agents searched outdoor locations around Stella and in two neighboring counties, Copeland said. Searchers also were looking for a pink sheet from Rowan's bed that her mother reported as missing, he said.

He urged residents who might be searching on their own to stay out of the woods, and for hunters to report anything unusual or suspicious. About 40 FBI agents and 10 support workers have joined the investigation.

FBI spokesman Jeff Lanza said the FBI is helping with searches and interviews and processing evidence from "indoor locations," although he wouldn't say whether that meant only Rowan's house or others.

Stella, a village of less than 200 people, is surrounded by miles of thickly forested hills, narrow valleys and cattle pastures. Temperatures have dipped to near or below freezing for the past two nights.

"There's not been any news yet. So we're still looking, still hoping. Everybody around here is praying that she's going to be all right," a red-eyed Colleen Spears told reporters as she hugged her daughter's oversized teddy bear outside their ranch-style home.

She said she was grateful for support from the community, including a candlelight march Tuesday night that brought out more than 200 people for a procession from a nearby church to the Spears' home.

I don't know why nobody checked on this poor child either! I t does not look very promising, I'm sad to say. Sad

Well, its not a major metropolis with a bunch of perverts living there and it hardly seems a likely prospect for some child-killer to have been touring the town and spoting his victim on some prior occasion and then stalking her.

Whats this about a woman coming over for the night supposedly because a nine year old girl was in the house and the father had to go out for some undisclosed reason but the woman who came over never checked on the nine year old girl? Spent all night guarding an empty stable did she? Most women aren't quite so dumb as that.

Published November 08, 2007 10:07 pm - NEOSHO, Mo. — Authorities hope DNA tests on evidence gathered from the home of a missing Stella girl will cast light on who might have been involved in her disappearance, officials said Thursday.

Girl still missing as more searchers arrive

NEOSHO, Mo. — Authorities hope DNA tests on evidence gathered from the home of a missing Stella girl will cast light on who might have been involved in her disappearance, officials said Thursday.

Jeff Lanza, special agent and spokesman for the FBI, told reporters at a news conference that authorities hope to have the results of the DNA tests within the next several days. He declined to give specifics.

The bureau also is helping local authorities interview people, including all those who were at Rowan Ford’s house that day, Lanza said.

“We will stay here as long as there are leads to be covered,” he said of the FBI’s plans for the case.

Meanwhile, the search for Rowan, 9, who vanished from her home almost a week ago, continues.

Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland on Thursday said he “absolutely” still believes that foul play is behind Rowan’s disappearance. He said he would not disclose details because the investigation is continuing.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol brought in 25 troopers to help with the search, which took investigators into parts of Newton, McDonald and Barry counties on Thursday. The troopers joined 50 FBI personnel, mostly agents, who are assisting local authorities.

“We have covered a lot of ground,” Copeland said.

Authorities are discouraging residents from mounting their own searches this weekend with the start of hunting season.

But, they are asking hunters to help with the search by keeping an eye out for anything that might help locate Rowan, Lanza said. Such items include pieces of clothing.

Colleen Spears, Rowan’s mother, has said she saw Rowan just before she left home at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, to go to work at the Wal-Mart store in Jane. David Spears, Rowan’s stepfather, and two of his male friends reportedly were with the girl at the home until they decided to go out together about 10:45 p.m.

David Spears did not return to the house until sometime around midnight, when one of his friends dropped him off, Copeland has said.

Copeland has said Spears made a phone call to his mother sometime after 1 a.m. Saturday and asked to use her vehicle. She took it to him about 1:30 a.m. and stayed at his house while he left in the vehicle for about 5 1/2 hours, the sheriff has said. The stepgrandmother told investigators that she never checked on Rowan while she was there watching television in the living room.

Colleen Spears found the girl missing when she returned home from work at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Namesake

Rowan Ford, 9, is named for the heroine in novels written by Anne McCaffrey, according to Colleen Spears, the girl’s mother.

OZARK, Mo. -- A 9-year-old southwest Missouri girl missing for a week was found dead Friday in a sinkhole in eastern McDonald County, a law enforcement official said.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because authorities had not yet made an official announcement, said the body of Rowan Ford was found on private land near Powell, about 10 miles south of the girl's hometown of Stella, a village of about 200 people.

A spokeswoman for the Newton County Sheriff's Department, which has been handling the case, declined to comment pending a news conference later in the day.

Rowan was reported missing Saturday after her mother, Colleen Spears, returned home from a night shift at a Wal-Mart in a nearby town and couldn't find her daughter. Rowan's stepfather, David Spears, told investigators he last saw the girl asleep in her room around 10:45 p.m. Friday before he left her alone and went out with friends.

Calls to the family's home yielded a busy signal Friday morning.

Two Men Have been Arrested in Death of 9 Year Old Missouri Girl Rowan Ford

http://scaredmonkeys.com/2007/11/10/two-men-have-been-arrested-in-death-of-9-year-old-missouri-girl-rowan-ford-2/

Two men have been arrested; however, no names released yet.

Two men have been arrested in the death of 9 year old Rowan Ford. Rowan Ford was reported missing after her mother, Colleen Spears, returned home early Nov. 3 from a night shift at a Wal-Mart. Her body was found on private land about 10 miles south of the girl’s hometown of Stella. Authorities have determined Rowan’s death to be a homicide; however, they have not provided a cause of death yet. Authorities believe that Rowan Ford was killed in Barry County.

What an absolute shame and pathetically sad story.

Stepfather is one of the men arrested in connection with Rowan's murder.  Poor little child.
