Authorities seek relatives of Robert V. Payne, man found dead in East Lake
Posted by Birmingham News staff November 20, 2007 10:43 AM
Authorities are searching for relatives of a man who was found slain in East Lake.

Children playing behind a house discovered the partially burned body of Robert V. Payne, 41, about 4:30 p.m. Saturday in a garage behind the home at 7422 First Ave. South.

There was blood on the scene and leaves were scattered around the body, which appeared to have been set on fire. Police said it appears Payne was beaten.

Authorities used fingerprints to identify Payne, said Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Jay Glass. Authorities have been unable to locate Payne's next of kin. Prior arrest records indicate Payne may have had parents or other relatives in the Oneonta area, Glass said.

Family member's are asked to call the coroner's office at 930-3603.

Hell of a way to inform the family, eh?  Rolling Eyes

My father heard of the death of his father over a car radio while driving home after a business trip.  His brother had been notified their father had frozen to death during a long walk along a levee on the Ohio Riverin the winter.   He had tried to start a small fire  Sad  This was before the times of cell phones and such, and I suppose since next of kin had been notified, the news was free to be announced.  An awful way to find someone you loved has passed on Sad.

What I have not found yet, is if this is in relation to a conviction of the murder of Mr. Payne. Once I know for sure, I will move this to solved.
