EL DORADO, Kansas, Nov. 26, 2007 -- An 18-year-old Butler County Community College student has been missing since late Friday night. Police now say they do suspect foul play.

A bar on the east side of El Dorado was the last place anyone saw Emily Sander. Police say, just before midnight on Friday, Sander was seen with 24-year-old Isreal Moreles. Now sander is missing and police believe Moreles has left the state.

"Foul play is suspected and we are asking for the public's assistance in locating Emily," said Captain Justin Philips, El Dorado Police Department.

And that is all police are saying.

They are staying tight-lipped about whether Sander left the Retreat bar willingly with Moreles and just why they suspect foul play.

"There are certain things that we are not going to comment on that have come to light in the investigation."

Police say they are investigating several areas of El Dorado in relation to Sander's disappearance, and while they won't tell us exactly where those areas are, they do say the 18-year-old's car was found at The Retreat.

While police process the car for clues they are turning they're attention to Isreal Moreles. Police believe the 24-year-old is on the run with his 16-year-old girlfriend.

The two have ties in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Police say they are driving a green 2007 Ford Taurus with Kansas tag XUJ 487.

Police believe Moreles and his girlfriend may very well know the whereabouts of Emily Sander.

"Time is always critical. There is always that potential of losing evidence that may have been lost the longer we sit here and wait."

If you know anything about the disappearance of Emily Sander or the whereabouts of Israel Morales, please call 1-800-KS-CRIME.

Bedspread Clue in Kansas Teen's Disappearance

Rental Car Used by Suspect in Emily Sander's Case Is Recovered in Texas

Nov. 28, 2007
Kansas authorities released an image Tuesday night of a bedspread they say may help in the search for Emily Sander, an 18-year-old last seen Friday night leaving a bar with a man now wanted by police for questioning in the teen's disappearance.

"All we're saying is, we're looking for that bedspread and it's something we'd like to find," Capt. Justin Phillips of the El Dorado, Kansas, police department told ABC News.

Tuesday night, authorities in Vernon, Texas, about 350 miles south of El Dorado, discovered a rental car used by Israel Mireles, 24. According to eyewitnesses, Mireles and Sander left the Retreat Bar in El Dorado together Friday night.

The floral bedspread police are looking for may be linked to the El Dorado motel where Mireles was temporarily living. An altercation took place in his motel room either late Friday or early Saturday that may have involved Sander. Motel managers notified El Dorado police, who since have treated Mireles' room as a crime scene.

"We have found some evidence that Emily may have been the victim of a violent crime," Phillips said Tuesday. "They are still processing that and have been for the last two days."

Mireles, along with his 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend, Victoria Martens, has not been seen since, though investigators don't believe Sander is traveling with them. Phillips said Tuesday that Mireles and Martens might be making a run for the border.

"We have some indication that they are attempting to cross into Mexico," he said. Mireles has family in Vernon.

Several people reported seeing Mireles, who has a "minor" criminal record, and Sander spending time together and then leaving the bar Friday night, but Phillips would not say whether she left with him voluntarily. Sander's car was found parked at the bar Saturday.

Authorities said they don't believe Martens was in the hotel room with Mireles and Sander when their altercation took place.

At a televised news conference Monday afternoon, Sander's grandfather Clement Sander appealed to the public for help in finding his granddaughter, a student at Butler Community College.

"She was a sweet little girl, and she's done real good in school," Clement said. "She had a lot of friends and was easy to get along with."

"Help us find Emily," he said. "We need closure on this one way or another."

Missing porn star
Missing Kansas college student led a double life as an Internet porn star, friend says

Posted: Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at 3:59 p.m.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - A missing Kansas college student believed to be the victim of foul play led a double life as an Internet porn star by the name of Zoey Zane, a friend told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

A young woman resembling 18-year-old Emily Sander appears nude in photos posted on a Zoey Zane Web site.

"She enjoyed it. She is a young teenage girl and she wanted to be in the movies and enjoyed movies. She needed the extra money," said Nikki Watson, a close friend of Sander's at Butler County Community College. "Nobody in El Dorado knew besides her close friends."

Police in El Dorado, where Sander was last seen on Friday, said they are aware of the Web site. But police investigator Chad Young would not confirm whether Sander is Zoey Zane and would not say whether the site was connected in any way to her disappearance.

Sander was last seen leaving a bar in El Dorado, about 30 miles from Wichita, with a man identified by police as Israel Mireles, 24, authorities said. Sander and Mireles met that night at the bar, according to Watson.

Joe Terziu, owner of Bella Casa Italian Restaurant, where Mireles worked, told The Wichita Eagle that he saw blood on a bed and carpet in the motel room where Mireles had been staying. Police have not confirmed the account.

A nationwide manhunt was under way for Mireles and his 16-year-old girlfriend. A rental car he had been driving turned up Tuesday in Texas.

Sanders recently signed a contract for the pornographic work on the Web site, and told her parents about it on Thanksgiving, Watson said. Her boyfriend broke up with her because he did not approve, Watson said.

On the Web site, she appears in various states of undress in a cowgirl costume and a jungle-print bikini.

The New York Post  ( I HAVE TO SAY I AM NOT A FAN OF the NYP, but I will post this anyway)

MISSING GIRL A 'PORN STAR'; KANSAS CO-ED'S FAMILY STUNNED

An 18-year-old college student who led a double-life as an Internet porn star is missing and believed to have been the victim of foul play, authorities said.

Emily Sander, of El Dorado, Kan., went by the name Zoey Zane on a Web site featuring her in various compromising positions.

On her site, she describes herself as "a spunky little teen with a super sexy side," saying "as soon as I turned 18, I started shooting for my site."

Authorities are investigating whether it had anything to do with her disappearance last Friday.

"She enjoyed it. She is a young teenage girl, and she wanted to be in the movies and enjoyed movies. She needed the extra money," said Nikki Watson, a close friend of Sander's at Butler Community College.

"Nobody in El Dorado knew besides her close friends."

El Dorado Police Chief Tom Boren said FBI and state experts on Internet crime have been called in.

"Investigators are aware that Miss Sander was apparently involved in a Web-site situation," said Boren. "Allegations that this may factor into her disappearance are being thoroughly investigated."

The teen was last seen leaving a local bar with a man police identified as Israel Mireles, 24, whom she had just met that night according to Watson.

When Mireles did not show up Saturday at his job at an Italian restaurant, his boss went to the motel where he was staying.

"His motel room was found to appear in great disarray and a large quantity of blood was found in the room," said Boren.

A nationwide manhunt is now under way for Mireles and his 16-year-old girlfriend — a rental car he had been driving turned up Tuesday in Texas, where he has family.

Sander recently signed a contract for the pornographic work on the Web site, and told her parents about it on Thanksgiving, Watson said. Her boyfriend then broke up with her because he did not approve, she said.

Sander's grandmother, Shirley Sander, was shocked.

"What you are telling me now is things we have never been told or heard. I don't know what to say. We have never heard anything like this and truthfully I don't believe it," she said.

The brown-haired, blue-eyed Sander was last seen wearing low-rider jeans and a "Don't Mess With Texas" T-shirt. She has tattoos and body piercings.

Gosh how awful. This girl sounds like she was mixed up in a lifestyle that was very dangerous. At 18, kids never think bad things can happen to them. I guess she didn't realize it either. Poor kid.

I feel for her family. They've had an extra blow, in finding out about her web site.

Body Appears to Be Missing Kan. Student

Nov 29, 5:53 PM (ET)

By ROXANA HEGEMAN

(AP) Highway workers and a Kansas State Trooper close US 54 near Toronto, Kan., Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007....

EL DORADO, Kan. (AP) - A body found in Kansas appears to be that of a missing college student who led a secret life as an Internet porn star, police said Thursday.

Authorities said the preliminary physical description of the body found about 50 miles east of El Dorado matches that of missing college student Emily Sander. Investigators refused to give details about the state of the body or how it was found.

Police Chief Tom Boren said the cause of death was not yet known. An autopsy is planned.

Sander, 18, was last seen leaving an El Dorado bar Friday with a man who has been the focus of a nationwide search since police found large quantities of blood in a Kansas motel room where he was staying.

Prior to finding the body, investigators said they had not found a link between Sander and her activities as an online porn star named Zoey Zane. But publicity about her explicit photos brought a flood of tips, many of them false leads.

"No tips were generated from it," Boren said.

Sander, who attended Butler Community College, left the bar with Israel Mireles, 24. Authorities are looking for him and his 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend.

The rental car Mireles was driving was found abandoned Tuesday in Vernon, Texas, where he has relatives. Investigators interviewed family members and planned to bring the vehicle back to Kansas for processing.

"We feel they know where he is at, but they haven't shared that with us," Boren said.

On Thursday, searchers on foot and all-terrain vehicles were checking the tall grass along each side of Highway 54 near Neal, Kan., as they traced the route Mireles may have taken Saturday on the way to Baxter Springs to pick up his girlfriend.

So far searches using dogs, planes, underwater equipment and divers at the Walnut River dam have yielded no new evidence.

"We have about exhausted a lot of the resources we have until we can focus on a particular area," Boren said.

Dozens of people gathered Wednesday in El Dorado for a candlelight vigil for Sander. The turnout moved her grandfather, Clement Sander, who said Emily Sander's disappearance shows tragedy can suddenly strike anyone.

"All I can say to you young folks out there is be careful," he said. "It is a cruel world."

Emily Sander Case Now a Homicide Investigation

Updated: Nov 29, 2007 06:06 PM EST

Authorities in El Dorado say a body found 50 miles east of town matches the description of Emily Sander. For that reason, police are now calling her disappearance a homicide.

Police have notified Sander's family. A positive identification will take some time.

Sander was last seen Friday night leaving a bar. She was last seen with 24-year-old Israel Mireles. He has now been named a suspect in her death

Police say they have talked with the operators of an adult website that Sander posed for and are convinced that it did not play a role in her disappearance.

Dec 1, 2007 2:04 PM (2 days ago) AP
WICHITA, Kan. (Map, News) - Police on Saturday identified the body they found Thursday as that of missing Butler County college student Emily Sander.

Police found the body Thursday and said at the time that it appeared to match Sander's descritpion. Saturday's identification by a forensic orthodontist confirmed that.

The body was released to Sander's family after forensic examinations and an autopsy. The results of that examination and the cause of death were sealed by the county attorney's office, and police would not release details about the cause of death.

Police also said Saturday they were re-intervieiwng witnesses, family and associates of suspect Israel Mireles, 24 and his 16-year-old girlfriend, Victoria Marten. They said his whereabouts were still unknown, but they believed Marten was still with him.

If Mireles fled to Mexico it would pose special legal challenges for efforts to prosecute him, officials said.

Sander, 18, disappeared late Nov. 23 after leaving a bar with Mireles outside El Dorado. A body matching Sander's description was found Thursday. Police now say Mireles is a suspect in Sander's disappearance.

If Mireles went to Mexico, where he was born and has relatives, local authorities would have to compile especially detailed warrants and translate them into Spanish, El Dorado Police Chief Tom Boren said.

Mireles, who had been in the United States legally, moved to El Dorado from Hays.

El Dorado officials would have to use the foreign extradition process to bring back Israel Mireles, 24, said Butler County Attorney Jan Satterfield, whose office would prosecute him.

"It's a whole lot more complicated" than a case totally within a U.S. jurisdiction, Satterfield said.

If the crime qualifies for the state's death penalty and Mireles is charged that way, authorities could be legally blocked by Mexico, Boren said.

Mexico would require that authorities submit the most serious charges that Mireles would face, and Mexico would not allow someone born there to be extradited to face capital charges, Boren said.

"They would have to be assured that the death penalty won't be sought."

No homicide charges had been filed as of Friday night, Satterfield said.

Boren said his understanding is that U.S. marshals could go into Mexico to pursue Mireles only at the invitation of Mexican authorities.

If U.S. authorities don't follow the protocols, they risk creating an international incident, Boren and Satterfield said.

"And, of course, that would jeopardize any possible prosecution," Boren said.

On Friday, an autopsy was conducted on the body found Thursday about 50 miles east of El Dorado.

Close to the body, along U.S. 54 near the Woodson County town of Toronto, investigators found the bedspread that had been missing from Mireles' El Dorado motel room, Boren said. Investigators found a large amount of blood in the room.

Although authorities and Sander's family members have concluded that it is her body, no official identification can be made until dental records from out of state arrive, Boren said Friday in an e-mailed statement. Sander had previously lived in Texas and has relatives there.

A positive identification could happen Monday, Boren said.

Sander's grandfather, Clem Sander of El Dorado, said Friday afternoon that relatives have begun preparing funeral arrangements, but details weren't settled.

Meanwhile, authorities remain concerned that Mireles hasn't been located and that his 16-year-old girlfriend apparently is with him. The 16-year-old is seven months pregnant.

Investigators think the girlfriend remains with Mireles "on her own volition, but investigators fear for her continued welfare, as well as that of her unborn child," Boren's statement said.

The missing teen's grandmother told The Eagle on Wednesday that she worries about the health of her 16-year-old granddaughter, Victoria Martens, and doesn't want the public to forget about her.

Authorities think Martens, now in the eighth month of her pregnancy, has been accompanying Israel "Izzy" Mireles. In El Dorado, Mireles has been named as a suspect in the death of Butler Community College student Emily Sander.

Martens' grandmother also told The Eagle that investigators found possible evidence -- including a blouse with what looked like blood spots -- in her trash container Nov. 24 after Mireles and Martens left her Baxter Springs home on their way to Texas.

Mireles, 24, was charged Nov. 30 in Hays with aggravated indecent liberties with a child, says a document filed in Ellis County District Court.

A felony warrant alleges that Mireles had intercourse with Martens when she was under 16, Ellis County Attorney Tom Drees said Wednesday.

Mireles allegedly is the father of Martens' unborn child, Drees said.

The Ellis County charge alleges that the sex crime occurred around May 7, 2007. Martens turned 16 on Sept. 23, 2007, according to the Web site listing for her by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The Web site says Martens and Mireles could travel to Mexico, where he was born and has relatives.

"Victoria may be in need of medical attention," says the center's listing, which includes photographs of her and Mireles.

Martens' grandmother, Sue Martens of Baxter Springs, said her granddaughter is expected to give birth at the end of January.

She said she worries about whether her granddaughter has been to a doctor.

Her granddaughter had told her that Mireles had treated her well, she said. Partly because of that, she said, "I have faith that he's keeping her safe, wherever they're at."

Still, she said, "We want her found. We don't want people to forget."

Last week, Martens' mother, Sandy Martens of Hays, issued a plea for her daughter to let her know she is safe. On Wednesday, Sandy Martens again asked that her daughter "contact anybody to let us know she's OK."

She last talked to her daughter by phone Nov. 25, the day after the teen left with Mireles, bound for Texas.

Sue Martens said her granddaughter has looked forward to being a mother and has become more mature.

"She's proud of that belly," Sue Martens said, sobbing at times during a telephone interview Wednesday.

She said her daughter and granddaughter spent the Thanksgiving holiday with her in Baxter Springs.

The expectant mother ate a lot of her grandmother's homemade pumpkin pie.

Sue Martens said she didn't approve of her granddaughter's involvement with Mireles because her granddaughter is so young and he is eight years older.

"But she was crazy for him," she said.

Sue Martens said she ignored Mireles when he came to her home to pick up her granddaughter before leaving for Vernon, Texas, where he has relatives.

Investigators found Mireles' rented Taurus abandoned in Vernon.

The couple left Baxter Springs on Nov. 24. Late that night, investigators found items at the bottom of her trash container, Sue Martens said. She said she saw what looked like a leather knife sheath, car keys and a new white blouse still bearing tags.

The blouse appeared to have blood spots on it, she said.

El Dorado police have said that Sander went missing the night of Nov. 23 after being seen with Mireles leaving a bar, the Retreat, just east of El Dorado. The next day, police said, they found a lot of blood in Mireles' El Dorado motel room, where he had been staying while working as a waiter at a restaurant next to the motel.

On Nov. 29, investigators found Sander's body and a missing bedspread from the motel room along U.S. 54, about 50 miles east of El Dorado.

Although authorities have called Mireles a suspect in Sander's death, they have not commented on whether he faces charges in her death, nor have they disclosed results of an autopsy.

Authorities have been referring questions to the Kansas attorney general's office, which has taken a lead role in the homicide investigation and any potential prosecution. On Wednesday, Ashley Anstaett, the attorney general's spokeswoman, declined to comment.

I hope this girl can get to a hospital when the time comes to deliver the baby. She is really in a vulnerable position - young, pregnant and on the run. I worry about what will happen to her and the newborn baby if she isn't found before she has her baby. And she obviously isn't getting medical care, so that could be an issue as well.
What a sad way for a baby to enter the world.
