DOUGLAS COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTM/RENO GAZETTE-JOUR
Dennis Kelly, 62, left, of Indian Hills, has been missing since Jan. 14.

Tip Line
Detective Ron Elges at 782-9911

Douglas County Sheriff's Department has received many tips on the whereabouts of a missing Indian Hills man but nothing has panned out, an investigator said Tuesday.

Dennis Kelly, a resident of Vassar Street in Indian Hills, was despondent over personal problems and walked away from his home Monday morning, Jan. 14. His wife didn't report his disappearance until Wednesday evening, Jan. 16.

The 62-year-old retired man is a survivalist and is known to spend nights on his own in the hills, said Detective Ron Elges. His wife may have waited to call police because of this, Elges said. On the day Kelly left, the area was blanketed with fog and dipped below freezing.

"He could be, unfortunately, deceased or he could be at a friend's or he could be camping and not come out until he's ready," Elges said.

County search and rescue members and the Sheriff's Mounted Posse spent three days searching the hills behind James Lee Park, a wildlife refuge area, along the Carson River and the residential areas in Indian Hills and Sunridge.

"We searched all the trails and off the trails. We searched road culverts and anyplace somebody might seek shelter," said Shaun Thomas, search and rescue team operations leader.

Kelly's wife is "distraught and concerned," Thomas said.

His wife was interviewed by detectives and has been ruled out as a suspect, Elges said.

So far, no clues have surfaced about where Kelly might be. Besides camping out in the wilderness, Kelly also was known to ride the Reno bus system.

The sheriff's department asks anyone who might have seen Kelly to call and make a report.

Kelly was wearing olive green pants and a green flannel shirt when he walked away from the home where he worked for his wife. He is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds. He has a full grey beard and grey hair. He is in good health but suffers from depression, according to a sheriff's department release.

Search suspended for missing man

January 26, 2008, 4:01 AM
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has suspended a search for a 62-year-old Indian Hills man missing for nearly two weeks.

Dennis Kelly was last seen at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 14 by his wife who reported him missing two days later.

She told deputies she last saw Kelly when he left their home to take a walk in the Indian Hills/Jacks Valley area of Douglas County.

Sgt. Jim Halsey said the search was suspended pending further information. He said Kelly's wife had been questioned about the disappearance and was not a suspect.

"We have no reason to believe there was foul play," Halsey said.

He said an investigation into the disappearance was ongoing.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Search and Rescue will return to the area this weekend, and cover new ground as part of training, Halsey said.

He said Kelly was in good physical health at the time of his disappearance, but suffered from depression, according to his wife.

Kelly is 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds. He has a medium build with blue eyes, gray hair and a long, gray beard. He was wearing olive-green pants and a green flannel shirt when last seen.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Douglas County Sheriff's Office dispatch center, 782-9935, ext. 7.

Thanks Bleached.  I think the weather has had an impact on the search too.  We have had back to back storms for 10 days here.  Lots of snow, especially in that area.  It is way too cold for him to be "camping" or hiding in the wilderness.  Hopefully something will come to light soon.  Even if he hurt himself (depression is mentioned), he needs to be found.

.......YW, the weather in many of these cases has me concerned.
Mr Kelly, in his photos looks a bit to frail to undertake any vigorous camping trip.

Authorities in Douglas County found and identified the body of a dead man right on the border of Carson City and Douglas County, near highways 50 and 395. Because of the location of the body police from both jurisdictions are involved in the case.

The body was identified as that of 62 year old Dennis Kelly from identification found on the victim. Officials say they found a wallet near the body. Dennis Kelly was reported missing in the area in January.

Police say a local stumbled upon the body at 8.30 a.m. while hiking this weekend and notified law enforcement.

According to investigators, the body appears to have been by the creek for a while and looks partially decomposed; worn down by elements.

The clear creek area is now an active crime scene and investigators say they will continue to comb the scene for clues as to how the body got there.

In the meantime, they say they have not ruled out foul play. An autopsy scheduled for sometime today should shed some light on the cause of death for the victim.
