Police search for missing conventioneer
6:31 a.m. January 28, 2008

SAN DIEGO – Police are searching Monday for a 23-year-old man who disappeared from downtown San Diego over the weekend.

Dane Chandler Williams was last seen at Sixth and K streets leaving Hard Rock Cafe around 2 a.m. Saturday, according to San Diego police Sgt. Garry Collins.

Williams is from the Los Angeles area and in town forthe Action Sports Retailers trade show. He did not return to his hotel room after leaving the restaurant, nor did he show up for work at the convention the next day, Collins said.

Foul play is not suspected yet, but friends fear something bad may have happened because for Williams not to show up for work is out of character, Collins said. Wialliams works in the marketing department of the action sports manufacturer Hurley.

Williams has blond hair and brown eyes and is around 6 feet 1, weighing about 175 pounds. He was wearing a black shirt with white stripes and blue jeans.

Anyone with information on Williams' whereabouts is asked to call San Diego police at (619) 531-2000.

Search for missing Huntington Beach man

Tuesday, January 29, 2008
HUNTINGTON BEACH (KABC) -- Police are asking for the public's help in finding a Huntington Beach man who vanished during a trip to San Diego three days ago.

Family members of 23-year-old Dane Williams say this is completely out of character for him. They say the Huntington Beach resident loves to surf and loves his job.

He had actually gone down to San Diego over the weekend for work. That's where police say Williams disappeared.

On Monday, friends and family members of Williams went down to San Diego to search for him themselves. They passed out flyers with Williams' photo on them, and posted them around the downtown area.

Police say Williams was attending the Action Sports Retailer Expo in San Diego. Williams works at Hurley International, which is a sports apparel company.

Williams was last seen late Friday night. Friends say they were all hanging out at restaurant at the Hard Rock Hotel in downtown. He left his friends at around 2 a.m. Saturday but never showed up at his hotel, which was located right down the street.

"We went from the House of Blues to the Hard Rock Hotel and that was the last I saw of Dane," said Jessica Bowland, a friend.

Jessica Bolen was out with Dane Friday night. She and her friends drove down to San Diego to meet Williams, but when they reached the Hard Rock Hotel they got separated.

"The friends that came down to San Diego we had no idea that there was a downstairs bar. So every time we contacted Dane he said he was at the bar and come to find out there was two separate bars and that is probably why we never saw him after that," said Bowland.

Police say a homeless man claims he saw Williams near a downtown library around 3 a.m. Saturday.

Williams' family says he actually made a call on his cell phone around 2 a.m. to a number with a 714 area code. They don't know who he was calling, but he never showed up to work at the convention on Saturday.

"We've checked the hospitals, the border. We've checked everywhere," said Hayley Williams, Dane's sister. "It's just so out of character for Dane. All of his clothes were still at his hotel, his money, his charger, his, everything."

Police are now asking for the public's help to find Williams. He is described as six feet tall and 175 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black shirt with white stripes and jeans.

If you have any information you're asked to call the San Diego Police Department at (619) 531-2000.

Police say at this point foul-play is not suspected.

Body found in alley thought to be missing O.C. man

8:03 p.m. January 29, 2008
SAN DIEGO – Police believe they found the body of a missing 23-year old Huntington Beach resident early Tuesday in a City Heights alley.

Police were called by a man who saw the body in a residential area near 52nd Street and Towle Court about 6:30 a.m., said homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney.

Rooney said the physical description and clothing matched that of Dane Chandler Williams, who was last seen about 2 a.m. Saturday near 6th and K streets in downtown San Diego.

“It does appear to be Dane Williams' body,” Rooney said Tuesday.

According to friends who have been passing out fliers and sending e-mails, Williams worked in the marketing department for Hurley International, a Costa Mesa-based clothing company that specializes in skate and surf sportswear. He was attending the Action Sports Retailer trade show at the San Diego Convention Center, which concluded Saturday.

Police were notified after Williams did not show up Saturday morning.

Friends said the 6-foot-1, 175-pound sports enthusiast was not into drugs and did not have a history of violence. They said it was totally out of character for him to not be in touch.

Heather Dickey, 24, said she drove from Cypress in Orange County to San Diego on Sunday and Monday with about 20 other friends to help look for Williams. She described her friend as an avid surfer and outdoorsman who was always cheerful.

“I was absolutely devastated when I heard the news,” Dickey said Tuesday night. “It's so unlike anything we were expecting.”

Rooney said police have notified Williams' parents, who were in town searching for him.

The death is being classified as suspicious and not as a homicide pending further investigation, Rooney said. There was no obvious trauma on the body, and police do not know how it got there, nor do they know the cause or time of death, he said.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday

Wow.  At least they found him quickly so the family won't have to endure what so many others have and that's not knowing where he is.  It is very sad that he was found dead.  I wonder why he was 20 miles away from the bar.  Will keep eyes peeled for further information.

O.C. Man's Death Still Mystery
Toxicology Test Results Shed Little Light

POSTED: 7:23 am PDT March 28, 2008

http://www.10news.com/news/15731530/detail.html

SAN DIEGO -- Toxicology test results are in for a Huntington Beach man who was found dead in a San Diego alley.

But authorities said they shed little light on how Dane Chandler Williams died.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported on its Web site Thursday that toxicology reports show Williams' blood level was .17 percent, more than double the legal limit for driving. The newspaper said the tests also found traces of drugs used in depressants and taken to induce sleep, relieve anxiety, ease muscle spasms and prevent seizures.

An autopsy conducted after his death showed no signs of trauma.

Williams was an intern at the Costa Mesa-based surf and skate clothing manufacturer Hurley International and was in San Diego to attend a sports trade show.

Suspect In Williams' Death To Be Charged With Sex Assault
Philong Huynh To Be Arraigned Tuesday

UPDATED: 11:37 am PDT September 15, 2009
San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit detectives have arrested a suspect in the January 2008 disappearance and death of 23-year-old Dane Williams of Huntington Beach.

On the weekend of Jan. 25, 2008, Dane came to San Diego as an employee of Hurley International for the Action Sports Retailers Convention. In the early morning hours of Jan. 26, 2008, Dane left a bar in the Gaslamp neighborhood and disappeared. On Jan. 29, 2008, his body was found in the north alley of 5200 Landis Street. Homicide Team II investigated Dane’s disappearance and death, including collecting DNA evidence that was entered into the CODIS, the Combined DNA Index System, database.

On August 19, 2009, detectives were informed of a DNA match to the sample SDPD Crime Lab personnel entered into CODIS. The match was related to an unsolved sex crime, committed in San Diego on June 6, 2009, involving an unidentified suspect.

The Homicide Unit investigated the unsolved sex crime and identified Philong Huynh, 39, as the suspect. Detectives also determined that Huynh lived in the 5300 block of Wightman Street, approximately 800 feet from the spot where Dane Williams’ body was found. Detectives arrested Huynh on Thursday, September 10, at 5:05 p.m., as he drove in the 4300 block of Orange Avenue, and served search warrants on two residences associated with Huynh.

Huynh will be charged with murder and two counts of sexual assault, and he will be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Police are asking that additional victims who have not reported a crime or citizens with information about him will contact the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293.

DA won't seek death penalty for man accused in fatal sex assault
11.12.10

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of sexually assaulting and killing an intoxicated man in San Diego and drugging and sexually assaulting another young man will not face the death penalty, prosecutors announced Friday.

Philong Huynh, 39, of City Heights, is accused of killing 23-year-old Dane Williams of Huntington Beach, on Jan. 26, 2008. The charges include murder and a special circumstance of murder during sodomy or oral copulation.

He will face a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The decision was made by District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, who considered the evidence and various factors in the case, Deputy District Attorney Gretchen Means said.

The case was assigned to Judge Robert O'Neill for trial, which is scheduled for Jan. 11, Means said. Lawyers for both sides will probably go to court in the near future to have the date changed, she said.

Williams, who had come to San Diego to work at a convention for a Costa Mesa-based skate and surfwear clothing company, disappeared after leaving the Hard Rock Cafe in the Gaslamp Quarter. He was intoxicated and seen falling to the ground when he left the club, prosecutors said.

His body was found three days later in an alley a block from where Huynh lived.

A cause of death was undetermined, but his underwear was missing and DNA was found on his clothes and body, Means said.

The defendant is also charged with sodomizing a second intoxicated young man who came forward last year. DNA evidence from that man allegedly tied Huynh to Williams' murder.

During a four-day preliminary hearing, Billy Sharrock, the former co-owner of a company that produced amateur gay porn, testified Wednesday that he hired Huynh in August 2006 to take care of the firm's computers.

He said Huynh told him that he liked to show young men a good time, then offer them something to "relax" and "have his way" with them.

He testified that Huynh said he liked straight guys because they were "more of a challenge."

"He told me he would offer a drug to them ... the majority of them took it," Sharrock said.

He said he saw Huynh with Valium at the office, and that the defendant told him he had a medical background and got his drugs in Mexico.

Sharrock said Huynh told him that "these boys were unconscious when he was having anal sex with them. That was his form of entertainment."

The witness said Huynh told him he liked intoxicated men and young men in the military.

Pharmaceuticals were later found in the defendant's home, including a prescription for benzodiazepine that was filled in January 2008, the month Williams was killed, according to prosecutors.

Last month, detectives were informed of DNA that matched an unsolved sex crime committed in San Diego on June 6, 2009 involving an unidentified suspect. The Homicide Unit investigated the unsolved sex crime and identified Philong Huynh, 39, as the suspect.

Detectives determined that Huyhn lived 800 feet from the spot where Williams' body was found.

Homicide detectives believe that there are additional victims of Huynh, who haven't reported his crime. They are asking anyone with additional information about him to call the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A City Heights man behind bars for allegedly sexually assaulting and killing an Orange County man in San Diego last year was previously accused of sexually assaulting a young man in Arizona but served just six months after pleading guilty.

Philong Huynh, 39, pleaded not guilty last week to murder and sodomy charges in the January 2008 death of 23-year-old Dane Williams of Huntington Beach. He was arrested Sept. 10 after authorities said DNA evidence linked him to the case.

The defendant was charged with kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 19- year-old mentally challenged man in Maricopa County, Ariz., in 1998 but pleaded guilty to just unlawful imprisonment in 2005 following a lengthy effort to extradite him from San Diego to Arizona. He was sentenced to six months in jail and three years probation.

http://www.cbs8.com/story/14972834/jury-reaches-quick-guilty-verdict-in-dane-williams-murder-trial

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego medical student who plied an already intoxicated Orange County man with drugs, then killed him during a sexual assault, was convicted Friday of murder and other charges.

A jury took three hours to find Philong Huynh, 40, guilty of murder in the January 2008 death of 23-year-old Dane Williams of Huntington Beach, who was in San Diego for a trade show.

Jurors also found that the murder happened while the defendant was engaged in the sodomy and oral copulation of an intoxicated person.

Huynh was additionally convicted of sodomy and oral copulation of an intoxicated person for a June 2009 sexual assault on a 20-year-old Navy Corpsman who came forward more than a year after Williams' death.
 ::snipping2::

In his rebuttal closing argument, Deputy District Attorney David Hendren noted that the defense conceded that the victim died while with the defendant. He also disputed a defense contention that Huynh couldn't be convicted of murder because a deputy medical examiner found the cause of Williams' death to be undetermined.

The prosecutor said the deputy medical examiner -- and his boss who reviewed the case -- determined that Williams' probable cause of death was asphyxia. Because the doctor couldn't determine how diazepam -- or Valium -- got into the victim's system, he had to list the manner of death as undetermined, Hendren told the jury.

"Their opinions support what we're saying here," the prosecutor said.

Hendren urged the jury to send a message to the defendant that he "can't treat people like they're his own sex gratification tool."

In his initial closing argument on Thursday, Hendren said Williams had too much to drink on Jan. 26, 2008, making him vulnerable to a "predator" like Huynh.

Hendren said Huynh was in his third year of medical school, had studied pharmacology, knew a lot about drugs and had prescriptions for Benzodiazapam and Clonazepam, He said the defendant acted like a "wolf in sheep's clothing" by giving Williams diazepam -- a central nervous system depressant -- rendering the victim unable to fight off a sexual assault.

Williams' body was found three days later in an alley two blocks from the City Heights home that Huynh shared with his mother.

The prosecutor said Williams, the Navy Corpsman and four other men who testified at the trial were heterosexuals who fell victim to Huynh's con game between 2007 and 2009. He said Huynh would meet young, good-looking straight men, gain their trust by talking about women, then offer to buy them drinks and take them to strip clubs in Mexico.

Once he got the victims alone, Huynh would slip them a depressant to knock them out, making them "basically unconscious," he said.

Jeremiah R., the Navy Corpsman, said he felt disoriented for five days after being drugged and sexually assaulted by Huynh, the prosecutor said.

Jeremiah testified he met an Asian man named "Phillip" in the Gaslamp Quarter in June 2009 and went with him to explore the beaches of San Diego. The alleged victim said he drank a bottle of cognac and complained of a headache, and "Phillip" gave him some pills from a Tylenol bottle.

In August 2009, sperm found on Williams' body was matched to sperm found on the Navy Corpsman, and Huynh was arrested the following month.

Defense attorney Terry Zimmerman said there was no proof that Huynh victimized Williams through sodomy or oral copulation, adding that the defendant masturbated on the victim's shirt.
