Excerpt from Dave Holloway's book on the blood in Deepak Kalpoe's car which was later identified by testing as cleaning fluid and chocolate.

Page 180

Excerpt from Dave's book on Page 180.

Art and I met with Ms. Flanegan at a local restaurant, and she seemed very apprehensive. We told her how we felt about the way the infestigation was going, how the evidence had been dealt with, Dennis Jacob's handling of the interviews, and that there were important things missing. We explained how we were first told there was blood in Deepak's car. The, there was no blood in the car. The seat had been cut out of the car and it tested positive for blood. Then, it supposedly tested positive for CHOCOLATE SYRUP and CLEANING FLUID. But the prime minister had said that it was definitely blood, and a police officer that Art talked to said it tested positive for blood.

Here is a website posted by Poster LDSTLOU in the Lively Discussion Thread.

She also explains that it is possible under the right conditions for the cleaning fluid GBL to present a false positive in a Luminol test.

Gamma Butyrolactone (GBL)
www.ukchems.com - A versatile & safe cleaning solvent.

There is also a tremendous amount of other information on that site such as the effects of GBL as a possible date rape drug.

Nothing is implied by this onformation other than what was originally reported as blood later seems to have tested as chocolate and cleaning fluid.  Certain cleaning fluids have been used as date rape drugs.

So we have Natalee in a place where a cleaning fluid/solvent was found.  Certain of these fluids have been used as a drug to subdie rape victims.

No official report has ever been released on the results of this testing.  It is not known if the actual substance found in the car is GBL or if that is some component in the make up of what was found.  It is a precursor and ingredient used in the better known pharmaceutical drug GHB which has legitimate uses in medicine and surgery as well as being known as the date rape drug called "roofies."

"Roofies" were mentioned at one time on one of the now defunct websites of JVDS possibly as a joke but included in comments from a friend.

Here are the effects of the ingestion of GBL as posted by ldstlou from internet research:

It produces deep, unarousable sleep. So far, it seems that the memory of what happened while under the influence of GBL will never come back. Side effects of GBL include: severe amnesia, vomiting, lethargy, confusion, hypothermia, coma, respiratory arrest, seizures, agitation, loss of bowel control, and even death. Victims of GBL often become unconscious after ingestion. However, one of the most dangerous parts of GBL is that a victim may act normally after the drug has been ingested. The victim may not seem drunk, but rather alert and fully functioning. The victim may not remember a thing starting from 30 – 45 minutes prior to the time the drug was administered.

http://tinyurl.com/2x98o5

Again, there is no information available as to the chemical composition of the alleged cleaning fluid found in the back seat material of the car belonging to Deepak Kalpoe.  During one of the searches, there was an empty Lysol bottle found along with other items that were taken into evidence in this investigation but no results ever released as to whether or not there was a connection.

The greatest puzzlement in all of this is how even the Prime Minister and FBI could have told the parents there was the presence of blood and yet testing concluded only cleaning fluid and chocolate.

What kind of preliminary testing was used to give out this information that there was blood present?  Did FBI agents actually see the substance that was tested?  Is it possible that during the ten days the prime suspects were given before the car was even impounded, the interior was changed out completely or such strong solvents used that whatever was there originally was degraded beyond use?

More unanswered questions that are part of the largest unanswered question of what became of Natalee Holloway.

Thank you for posting that, Klaas.  I wish the deVries staff would get back to us with any details they might be able to supply on that strange murder case of the Kelly man.

When new things are posted here, I guess one of us should contact the staff at the deVries website so they will know to come back and read what we have added.  I will try to remember to do that tomorrow when someone is likely to be in the office to receive the information.

You are probably right that if they are interested, they will continue to check this thread.  I may, however, send them a reminder every two to three weeks just in case they forget.   Wink

New article about Max DeVries

http://www.theoaklandpress.com/stories/020908/loc_20080209218.shtml

Family wonders what happened to missing boy

By VALERIE WEST
Of The Oakland Press

Photo courtesy of DeVries family Max DeVries, 14, takes a dip on the warm waters off Aruba in one of the last photos of him before he disappeared in May 2004.

A black scrapbook with a dried rose encased inside the cover holds photos, cards and memories of Max DeVries, a 14-year-old boy who was lost at sea in Aruba on May 12, 2004, one year before Natalee Holloway went missing. Nearly four years later, his mother, Yvonne DeVries of Brighton, still wonders what really happened to her son. "In the beginning, you want to believe it's an acci- dent," Yvonne said. "But then you think the worst."
Yvonne's husband died of a heart attack 18 months before Max's death. Still feeling the loss of her husband, the family - Yvonne, Max, daughter Dominique and Yvonne's sister-in-law - went to Aruba for a vacation. While at the hotel, they were befriended by a man and his adopted adult son.

On the day of Max's death, the father had invited Max to go out on personal watercraft with him. Yvonne, who said she was hesitant at first, gave in to Max's pleading.

The ride was supposed to last only 45 minutes, but when the two didn't show up after an hour, Yvonne knew something was wrong.

A few hours later, a rescue boat found the man floating without the watercraft four miles from shore, but not Max.

A three-day search ensued - with help from the Aruban Coast Guard, helicopters and a marine plane - but was eventually called off when nothing was found, according to police reports.

Both Yvonne and the man were questioned by the Dutch police in Aruba, but the man was never considered a suspect, according to transcribed reports.

The man told police that the two went for a ride on the personal watercraft and stopped at a sandbar. Max turned off his machine and dived into the water. He could not get the machine to start again. They made several attempts to tow the watercraft, but to no avail. There were, however, inconsistencies in the man's statements. On May 12, he stated that the two had agreed to float while holding onto their own craft with rope, and that Max let go and floated away. In a May 15 report, he said Max was sitting on the watercraft and, when he looked up, Max had jumped off and was swimming to shore.

Yvonne requested a polygraph and offered to pay, but the police did not find it necessary, she said.

Looking back, Yvonne believes they were targeted by the men, who she said had told her earlier in the week, "ÔWe were looking out of our bedroom window and we saw you playing with your kid and thought we had to meet you at the waterslide.'

"That's where it started. They stalked us out there," Yvonne said, adding that the police looked for the man's son, who did not show up until 10 minutes before he was brought to shore.

"At first you get these red flags, and these signals and instincts everyone talks about," she said. "And I ignored them."

Yvonne recalled that the men told her different stories of why they were in Aruba. Originally they said that the son's mother had died a year ago, but during a pool game, the son said his mother died when he was a baby.

"It was like they were trying to mirror our tragedy, so that I would believe and feel sorry for them and catch me off guard," she said, adding that they succeeded.

Yvonne was also disturbed that the man said he did not try to talk to Max as he floated out of sight, saying that they had made an agreement not to speak.

"When I saw Max for the last time, he was floating very calmly, moved now and then, but did not try to swim. We did not have any eye contact and we had not said anything to each other," he said in his statement.

It wasn't until 2005 that Yvonne found someone interested in her case.

Believing that the police in Aruba had not investigated thoroughly, she spoke with Lt. Cory Williams of the Livonia Police Department, who looked over the reports.

He believes the evidence suggests there is more to the story, he said.

"The first time I saw it, some of the things jumped out to me that didn't make sense," Williams said. "Based on what I found, they weren't being truthful or giving the full story."

Williams looked up information on the men, which he declined to comment on, but said if the police in Aruba had looked into their backgrounds, it would have prompted further investigation, he said.

Williams took the file to the FBI, which would not comment on the record. The case is still open, and Yvonne continues to hope that she will find an answer to her son's disappearance.

Through everything, Yvonne said traveling out of the country should still be a fun experience, but that travelers should not be naive and think they are as safe as they are in their own back yards.

"You just have to be always aware of your surroundings and who you're with. It's OK to be afraid. It's OK not to be friendly, not to be outgoing," she said. "And you know, you get lost, you want to have fun, and that's where we were. You want to not always have your guard up, and I should've, I should've."

Yvonne has taken her grief and made a positive contribution to the lives of families in need. She started fundraising in her husband's and son's memory, Max to the Millions. Each year, she plans at least one event and to give the proceeds to a family in need. The first year, the event aided a family who had two prematurely born boys. On March 15, a Sweet Sixteen Goes Mardi Gras event is planned at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi. Dancing, snacks and a silent auction will be featured at 7 p.m.

Case is similar to Holloway disappearance A little more than a week ago, Aruban prosecutors said they were reopening the investigation into the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway after seeing secretly taped material from a Dutch journalist of a confession by Joran Van der Sloot, one of the men last seen with Holloway. An Aruban judge denied a prosecution request to detain Van der Sloot. Aruban authorities have appealed that decision and expect a decision next week. - The Associated Press

Occasionally I have a flash about one of the many despicable things about Aruba. Today's despicable thing was the matter of Max de Vries, which makes me livid to this day.

So I decided to check out the “Max to the Millions” web site. (This will warm Anna’s, Kat_Gram’s, and Rob’s respective hearts. In fact, Rob might already have posted some of what’s below; he has been in touch with Yvonne deVries off and on.)

For those slightly newer to SM, Max deVries was a 14-year-old boy who apparently drowned while jet skiing in Aruba on May 12, 2004. For some ungodly reason Aruba decided to start a rumor that Max and his family (some said his mom's "boyfriend") was alive and well, living somewhere in Latin America, and his “death” actually was an INSURANCE SCAM. (Aruba loves it’s insurance scam rumors.) This rumor was “planted” (IMO), and it was done shortly after Natalee went missing - feeding rumors that Natalee's death ALSO was an insurance scam.

More info about Max deVries here:
http://scaredmonkeys.net/index.php?topic=725.20

The following article was in Amigoe.com; I believe the date was August 5, 2005. We used to have the link, but none of the old ones work anymore {emphasis added by msmarple} --

Insurance company in the US asks the police for information on Max de Vries

ARUBA – The police is still not sure whether the American Max de Vries is still alive. According to chief of police Gerold Dompig, the police have only heard that there are rumours going round. “District Noord is busy investigating the rumours via official channels.” He means the American FBI and Interpol.

Dompig denies the fact that he had gone to La Cabana Hotel with the developments of the case. “They have come to us. They have found information on the Internet and informed us. We are now busy investigating the information they found on the Internet.”

La Cabana’s story is different though. The hotel employee has again confirmed to the Amigoe today that the police had informed the hotel that Max de Vries is probably alive. The boy is supposedly in Brazil. The American Insurance Company had asked the Aruban police for more information. Dompig didn’t want to say the name of the insurance company. “That is not in the interest of the investigation.” On the question of why the police is cooperating with the request of an American insurance company, Dompig answered that “Aruba would like to close the case of Max de Vries. That’s why we have to investigate new information.” Max de Vries disappeared over a year ago after an accident with a jet ski during a vacation in Aruba.

{Ha! "Naming 'The American Insurance Company' would not be in the interest of furthering this rumor." -- msmarple.}

* * *

Meanwhile, Max’s mother, Yvonne deVries (whose husband had died 18 months previously) started a foundation in Brighton, Michign, in memory of Max – so Max’s little sister Dominique would have something to remember her brother by. Dominique had been born very premature, and spent weeks in a neo-natal unit. So the foundation benefited C.S. Mott’s Children Hospital’s neo-natal unit. (More about that below.)

In a particularly twisted development, when Dominique was in school, her classmates stumbled on web posts about the article above, and the rumors and comments it set off were horrifying for her.

From the “Max to the Millions” web site ( http://www.maxtothemillions.com/ ) -- bolding added by msmarple --

UPDATE - April 1st 2009

I want to send a big heart felt thank you for all you have done. Thank you for being part of Max to the Millions. It is because of you and your kind, generous heart that we were able to help so many. Know that over the years your donations mattered and your help was appreciated. Without you and your help, so many great things would be left undone. It truly is magical when we reach outside ourselves to help others.

Max would have been 19 years old on April 18th, and May 12th will mark the 5th year being without him.  I could never write or express what his loss has meant. I can only hope  by extending to others it shows in some small way that Max was here and he  was loved by me and so many others.

With sincere warmth and gratitude, thank you for sharing.

{UPDATE October - 2008}
(above heading inserted by msmarple for clarity)

An update on Max… The FBI called in October 2008 and informed me they closed their investigation on Max. Never knowing what happened in the last moments of Max’s life will be forever hard. I can truly say our Government as well as the Aruban government did not do enough to find out what happened to my son. It is so sad when a child is lost, killed, missing, or taken. But when it happens in another country you have no help or paper work to fill out. Lose a piece of luggage though, and the paper work and calls never end.

Everybody knows of Natalee Holloway, few know of Max DeVries.  Max was lost almost one year before Natalee went missing. With all the money and resources Natalee's family had they still have no answers. It is doubtful anything new will turn up about Max or Natalee.

I will always wonder if Max’s dad would have been by my side through all of this if there would have been more done to help this little boy and maybe a different outcome;  his father died 18 months before Max. I will always feel cheated and abandoned by our government and those who had the power to do more. I am thankful for the friends who stayed by my side in my darkest days; the angels by my side.

It has been almost five years since the disappearance of Max. Time moves forward and waits for no one even if you’re lost in grief. The best thing you can do is appear that you’re moving forward and hope you doing something right when everything seems so wrong.

This is the time of year I normally do our annual fundraiser, Max To The Millions. Times are hard and seem to be especially hard in Michigan and therefore I am putting this year’s event on hold.

Max To The Millions has made a difference and has helped so many. The room created at Mott's Children Hospital is still there for all  Moms of premature babies to use. The Tourette's Syndrome support group is still active and growing in strength. We will never know how many people we truly helped with our gifts of love given to those in the community. We give with an open heart in hopes that only good things happen.

To those who helped and were part of Max To The Millions, we thank you. For those who sent thoughts and prayers our way, we thank you. For those who were there for us, we thank you and those who were not we understand.

We hope you make wonderful memories with those you love to treasure for a lifetime.

With Angles Watching Over Us And Friends By Our Side We Are All Blessed.
Yvonne and Dominique DeVries.

Max to the Millions was created in hopes that Max's sister will always remember her father and brother.  We want to give and to remember while someone else receives a gift of love.  The money raised had been gifted to premature babies thru C.S. Mott's Children's Hospital each year at Max's birthday, April 18th.

* * *

(Per the web site's calendar, apparently no events to raise foundation money have been held since 2008.)

Imagine the astonishment here at SM when Peter de Vries got involved in the case! (Mrs. deVries does not use a space after “de”.)

Okay, I just wanted to do this in case any of those disinformation specialists are capable of a twinge of guilt.

Thank you monkeys for all you do.
