Didn't all this Chavez saber rattling/troop buildup/tank movement at the Colombian border happen suddenly within the last 48 hours ?  Chavez began this right after learning about the number two guerrilla leader/terrorist Paul Reyes [ FARC's Zawahiri ] being killed/taken out by Colombia yesterday.  The Persistance has no meaningful means of self defense I would think.  It seems prudent to leave the area, imo.

Red isn't by his computer right this second... but I will weigh in and say this - I personally have always and will always believe that they did put Natalee in the landfill... it's why they were never allowed to fully search there. Remember the fires set, the back hoe that filled in all the marked spots...

it's just MHO... but they never allowed that to be fully searched - and I know that Dave, TIM and all of them came back sick as dogs from the toxicity of that

I asked earlier about the chit  between Columbia and Venez.  as far as timing goes..on events there and Persistence leaving.
I for one would not want to be a chip on the table  just because I was on the water when VENEZ.. gets Pissed off..

I absolutely agree. 

i think if i had 20 men and a million + dollar boat entrusted to me, and the next part of the operation could be done cheaper, with fewer men, and less expensive equipment committed, i'd have done the same thing persistence did. especially with the volatility of colombia and venezuela l3 miles away.
