04/03/2008
KILLAWOG, N.Y. -- The Broome County Sheriff is asking for your help locating a missing woman. They're calling it a suspicious disappearance.

Dougherty, a Killawog resident, is 5’10”, has red hair, green eyes, and weighs 160 pounds. She was wearing purple pajama pants before she disappeared.

The Broome County Sheriff is asking for your help locating a missing woman. They're calling it a suspicious disappearance.

Harder said dozens of people are searching for the Broome County woman near her home on Jennings Creek Road. He said they have leads in many directions and everyone is a suspect at this point.

“We don't know if she's alive or not. We don't know. Unfortunately in our job we always suspect the worst and hope for the better,” said Harder.

If you have any information on the disappearance of her, the Broome County Sheriff's Department wants you to call them at (607) 778-1911.

Second-day search for Killawog woman ends without result

Friday April 4, 2008
KILLAWOG -- The family of a missing Broome County woman tried to remain hopeful Friday, as the second day of a massive search ended without results.

The search involving a state police helicopter, boats, police dogs, off-road vehicles and hundreds of law enforcement man-hours has yielded no sign of Bethanie L. Dougherty, 40, who disappeared early Wednesday morning.

"At this point, it looks pretty grim," said Dougherty's sister, Yvonne Brown. "I'm still hoping that they find her alive, but I don't know."

The search will continue Saturday.

"We will be looking at some more selected rural areas," said Broome County Sheriff's Capt. Michael Fedish. "Those areas will include some state forest and other wooded areas. If the weather is in our favor, we will put boats in and check the shoreline on Upper Lisle and Dorchester parks."

Law enforcement officials said they were still treating Dougherty's disappearance as a missing-person case.

"We have been advised of no reason to treat it any different at this time," Fedish said after the search concluded today.

Police were looking for a mid- to late-1990s Chevy S-10-style pickup truck reported in the area at the time of Dougherty's disappearance, according to the state police Web site.

Despite the wide-ranging search, authorities concentrated a great deal of their efforts at the white-sided, two-story home where Dougherty was last seen around 10 p.m. Tuesday. The dirt driveway leading to the home, fronted by the fast-moving, rain-swollen Jennings Creek, was blocked off by a Broome County sheriff's car and Deputy Michael Kelly kept a log with the time of those coming and going.

Three black vans from the New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit were in the Dougherty driveway. With two exceptions, the unit's technicians remained in the home throughout the day -- they took a short lunch break and one went outside briefly to shoot several photographs of areas around the house.

Dougherty was last seen by her 18-year-old son, according to Broome County Sheriff David Harder. Neighbors called 911 around 3 a.m. Wednesday to report hearing a woman's screams, but police who responded found nothing out of the ordinary, Harder said.

Dougherty was reported missing later that day, and a police search was launched Thursday.

The screams were heard about the same time Dougherty usually would get up for work, Fedish said. Dougherty worked at the Xtra Mart convenience store in Freeville. About a year ago, she lost her job at the Cortland Community Re-entry Program, a rehabilitation facility for people with brain injuries, Brown said.

Dougherty's estranged husband, Bill Dougherty, was among those searching for the missing woman on Thursday and Friday. A telephone number for him could not be found Friday.

The couple separated in January, after Bill Dougherty asked for a divorce a few months earlier, Brown said.

The couple had recently been fighting over their shared Jennings Creek Road home, Brown said. A judge gave Bethanie Dougherty until the end of the school year to find a new place to live after Bill Dougherty took his wife to court, Brown said.

Brown and another sister, Billie-Jo Nuckolls of Homer, said their sister never reported any physical altercations, despite the marriage's struggles. The sisters said they didn't know Bill Dougherty very well, though he had been married to their sister for about eight years.

Since the separation, Bill Dougherty has been living with his parents in Marathon, Brown said.

Bethanie Dougherty has dated a few men since the separation, but there were no serious relationships, her sisters said.

Barb Stiles of Marathon, a longtime friend of Dougherty's, said her children grew up with Dougherty's three teenage children: Logan, 18, Josh, 15, and Samantha, 14.

Dougherty's first husband, Pat McMahon of Marathon, is the children's father, Stiles said. The couple shared custody of the two younger children, with the oldest staying full-time with his mother, Stiles said.

Dougherty's mother, Avis Dufresne of Homer, described "Buffy," as she was called, as "a jovial, fun-loving and compassionate but stubborn woman.

"She loved everybody and everything. She was just a wonderful person," Dufresne said.

Between 80 and 100 volunteers reported to help Friday, and in teams combed woods and hills near the northern Broome County community.

The morning's first searchers, many wearing their orange hunting gear for warmth and visibility, were greeted by a light snow covering the ground and many hilly areas, fog in the higher elevations and a mist-like rain. Searchers going out in the afternoon were quickly soaked by heavier rains.

"Not pleasant," was the way Al Spoor of the Broome County Search Team described the weather. "Mother Nature definitely was working against us. The amount of precipitation in the last few weeks made footing unsure. It was slippery and some of the area was steep terrain. Some areas were actually ice packed. The winter vegetation was simply bent over and quite slippery."

By early afternoon Fedish said searchers had combed approximately 200 acres and some 12 to 15 miles of roads, including Oregon Hill Road, Cook Hill Road, River Road and Killawog Hill Road.

The Broome County Sheriff"s Department and New York State Forest Rangers placed boats in the Tioughnioga River at Chenango Forks and worked their way north and west to where Jennings Creek enters the river in the Killawog area.

For now, the family, which is not allowed to join the search, is trying to spread the word about the missing woman. Nuckolls said she and her boyfriend printed 600 missing-person fliers and were distributing them across the region.

"I can't think of anything else to do but to get her face out there," Nuckolls said.

Ground search ends for missing Killawog woman

April 5, 2008

The search for a missing Killawog woman continued by boat today, but the major ground search is likely over, a detective on the case said.

Law enforcement boats today searched the Whitney Point Reservoir for signs of Bethanie L. Dougherty, 40, who disappeared early Wednesday morning, said Broome County Sheriff's Detective Lt. Patrick Isenburg.

A ground search conducted in the two days after Dougherty disappeared covered about 200 acres of wooded, hilly terrain around the woman's Jennings Creek Road home in the Town of Lisle, north of Whitney Point. Having covered so much ground with no sign of Dougherty, the investigation into the disappearance of the mother of three is now entering a second phase, Isenburg said.

"(Investigators will) keep talking to people and keep knocking on doors," said Isenburg. "That's how these things usually reach a conclusion."

Dougherty was last seen by her 18-year-old son around 10 p.m. on Tuesday. Neighbors reported hearing a woman's screams around 3 a.m. Wednesday, but police who responded found nothing out of the ordinary. Dougherty was reported missing later that day.

Dougherty is a white female, with red hair and blue eyes. She is 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs about 160 pounds. She was last seen wearing purple pajamas.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Broome County Sheriff's Office at (607) 778-1911.

Relatives of missing mother place fliers in Ithaca

 April 7, 2008
KILLAWOG -- Relatives of a 40-year-old Killawog woman, who's been missing since early Wednesday, kept themselves busy over the weekend by going to convenience stores as far away as Ithaca to put up posters with Bethanie L. Dougherty's picture.

Dougherty's sister, Yvonne Brown of Lisle, said relatives also handed out fliers during the Maple Festival that draws thousands to Marathon, about 3.5 miles north of Killawog.

Dougherty has been missing since neighbors reportedly heard a woman screaming for help around 3 a.m. Wednesday outside her house on Jennings Creek Road in the Town of Lisle.

Brown said she talked to Dougherty's oldest son who said he slept through the screams. The 18-year-old boy was reportedly the last person to see Dougherty.

Police had no new information on the case Sunday, but the investigation continues.

Police are still looking for a mid-to-late 1990s Chevy S-10 pickup truck seen near Dougherty's house around the time of the screams.

Dougherty usually woke up around 3 a.m. to get ready for work at the Xtra Mart in Freeville, about 25 miles away from her northern Broome County home.

A co-worker and her relatives said Dougherty was noticeably stressed prior to her disappearance, probably from issues related to several "boyfriends."

Dougherty, known as Buffy to her friends, has a friendly, outgoing personality, Brown said.

Police had conducted a massive ground search late last week for the woman and also searched the Whitney Point Reservoir, about three miles from her home.

Anyone with information is asked to call 607-778-1911.

Very smart article, placed in a local newspaper....making one feel they  personally know Bethanie. If anyone reads this and knows anything they will perhaps give up information because they feel a connection. Hope it works.

Missing store clerk lights up the room and life

April 19, 2008

You know Bethanie Dougherty, even if you don't know her personally.

By now you know who Dougherty is because she is missing — at least law enforcement, her family and friends hope you do. She was last seen on the night of April 1. Cops, her family and residents from her hometown in Killawog, about 25 miles from Ithaca, have searched all over for her. They can't find her, and it doesn't look like she intended to leave that night.

When Dougherty wasn't missing, she could be found most days at the Xtra Mart across the street from NYSEG here in Tompkins County. Her co-workers say she was a pleasure to work with and she talked to every customer. Even if you don't know her by name, you know the type.
She's the friendly clerk at the convenience store. She probably sees you more than some members of your family do. Daily, she cashes you out for cigarettes, coffee and overpriced gas. On the good days, when you are in a good mood, you let her engage you in conversation because that's the type of person she is, friends say. On the bad days, when that overpriced gas gets you angry, you scan your debit card and on your way you go. The opportunity to meet one of the people who make this world a special place is lost because of a complicated commodities market.

Dougherty is training to be a manager at the Xtra Mart, where she's worked since November. She works the early shift, where the arrival and departure of customers is part of the daily real-world grind. The convenience store — a community meeting place — is the bricks-and-mortar equivalent of the social networking Web sites we spend too much time on. It's MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn all rolled up in one — and you can even get a good cup of coffee.

It was at Xtra Mart where Dougherty reconnected with many people who had lost touch with her. Heather Williams, a teacher and softball coach in Dryden, first met Dougherty about a decade ago through a bowling league at Marathon Lanes. Williams became reacquainted with Dougherty at the convenience store. “It is nice to be able to pop in and see her,” she said.

Dougherty's laughs are loud and hugs are strong, Williams said. Dougherty often talks about her three children, whom she loves with all her heart.

County to resume search for McAfee, Dougherty

April 24, 2008
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office will launch a boat this morning on the Susquehanna River to continue the search for Joseph McAfee, according to Sheriff David E. Harder.

McAfee jumped from the Route 26 bridge April 12. His girlfriend told police McAfee had been drinking and the two of them had had an argument.

On Friday, the sheriff’s office will have a boat crew continue the search for Bethanie Dougherty from Chenango Forks to Killawog.

Dougherty went missing from her Killawog home April 1. State police were called around 3 a.m. April 2 by neighbors who reported hearing a woman’s screams. The mother of three, who lives on Jennings Creek Road, was reported missing later that day.

Family dealing with second missing persons case

06/09/2008

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Bethanie Dougherty has been missing since April and while the search continues, it is not the first time someone in her family has disappeared. Dougherty's cousin Marla Greene-Ware was reported missing after her birthday on June 5, 1998. It was the last time anyone saw her alive.

Two weeks after a missing persons report was filed, police searched Marla Greene-Ware's apartment on West Mohawk Street where they found her body. They say that her body had been there for months.

"Due to the condition of the body of when it was found, the medical examiner was unable to determine a cause of death. You can imagine what two months in the summer heat would do to a body," said Sergeant Charles Tonkin.

Greene-Ware's death is considered suspicious. The case was reopened in 2005, but police have no suspects and only a few leads.

"I do have a person of interest in this, that person has been spoken to on this and he's not really cooperative," Sergeant Tonkin said.

Sergeant Tonkin wouldn't say who the person of interest is, but did say the person is in jail on a separate charge. He says the Oswego Police department just learned the two women are related, but he doesn't think the two cases are. He says hopefully, the new information might bring forth new leads.

Anyone with any information on Marla Greene-Ware's death is asked to call the Oswego City Police Department at (315) 342-8130.

Missing Woman Rally

Last Update: 8/25 9:04 pm
We begin with the latest effort to find a Killawog woman who mysteriously vanished 5 months ago.
A scream in the night, one of the few clues.
Monday morning, red balloons, each holding a missing persons card, floated skyward this morning, another step in the search for Bethanie Dougherty.
Bethanie, nicknamed Buffy, was last seen on April first.
Today her family held this rally at the Red Bear Inn in Marathon to keep the investigation alive.
The event was part of the CUE Center's On the Road to Remember Tour, a national tour of 110 cold cases and 6 homicides.
After the tour, the center, based in North Carolina, will do more to find answers, including public and active searches.
That's why Bethanie's family got the organization involved. Terry says "it seemed like a great way to get Buffy back in the news, get some attention to the situation, hopefully get some information that we need to find her"
Monica says "the lighting of the candle is a symbol of hope and also the releasing the balloons, so we're hopeful or we remain hopeful that some sort of resolution will be brought soon for this family
The family also attached a card with Dougherty's information on it with a calendar on the back, in hopes that someone may find it, hold on it, and one day provide answers.

Search For Bethanie Continues

Story Created: Oct 21, 2008 at 9:12 PM EDT
The family of Bethanie Dougherty is still holding onto hope that she will be returned alive.

But, they say they also realize, that may not be the case.

Which is why the family is asking for anyone, especially hunters going out in the Marathon, Killawog, Lisle and Whitney Point areas, to keep an eye out this fall.

The 40 year old has been missing since April, and was last seen wearing purple pajamas.

The family asks that if anyone does find her, to not disturb the scene.

If you have any information about Bethanie, call the Broome County Sheriff's office at 778-1911.

The report I got this morning indicated this body has some connection to a house fire nearby.

Police are not releasing the woman's identity, but say they are treating it as a homicide case. (seems like they know who it is)
A neighbor tells News 10 Now this homicide may be a connection between a house fire in the area last night. The fire happened just before 11 p.m. along Taughannock Boulevard.
Police are not saying whether or not there is a connection between the two. They are planning a news conference Thursday afternoon where they will release more details.
