Amber Alert Issued for 2 Boys After Father Shoots Estranged Wife
Monday , June 16, 2008

LOS ANGELES —

A man shot his estranged wife after she dropped off their two young sons on Father's Day and took off with the boys, authorities said.

The pickup truck he used Sunday morning to get away from his Sunland home north of Los Angeles was found empty on Sunday night in Lancaster, Los Angeles police Officer Karen Smith said.

Jose Luis Ortega, 26, shot the boys' mother as many as 12 times, but police said she was able to speak while being taken to the hospital.

"He told his wife that he was going to kill her family and that he was going to flee to Mexico," Smith said.

An Amber Alert has been issued for the two boys, 5-year-old Diego Fabian Ortega and 3-year-old Luis Gonzalo Ortega.

Their mother's name has not been released. She was in very serious condition early Monday following surgery.

Ortega is an itinerant construction worker, police said, and should be considered armed.

Neighbor Trevor Pikhart said he was getting ready to brush his teeth Sunday morning when the shooting started. "All of a sudden we heard four shots — boom, boom, boom, boom," Pikhart said. There was a pause, he said, then more shots.

I hate to hear this.

Praying for mom and her two boys.  I hope he doesn't harm these cute kids.  They must be so scared.

AMBER ALERT ISSUED FOR 2 BOYS CANCELED THOUGH KIDS STILL MISSING

LOS ANGELES —  An Amber Alert for two young brothers taken by their father after he shot his estranged wife on Father's Day has been canceled, though the boys are still missing.
Nevada police canceled the alert for Diego Fabian Ortega, 5, and 3-year-old Luis Gonzalo Ortega, 3, because they believe the boys' father, 26-year-old Jose Luis Ortega, is taking the children to Mexico, FOX5Vegas.com reports.
The man's pickup truck, which he used Sunday morning to get away from his Sunland home north of Los Angeles was found abandoned on Sunday night in Lancaster, Los Angeles police Officer Karen Smith said.
Jose Ortega shot the boys' mother as many as 12 times, but police said she was able to speak while being taken to the hospital.
"He told his wife that he was going to kill her family and that he was going to flee to Mexico," Smith said.

Two Missing Boys Found Safe in Mexico; Dad Still at Large

Los Angeles -- Relatives of a man accused of abducting his two sons and shooting his estranged wife on Father's Day returned the children to police Tuesday as police continued searching for the suspect.

Detectives enlisted the help of Jose Luis Ortega's relatives to locate the children in Mexico, Capt. Joe Curreri said.

The relatives, whose identities were withheld to ensure their safety, brought the children across the California-Mexico border and handed them to police, the captain said.

The relatives said Ortega dropped the boys off with them, "said goodbye to (the children) and took off," Curreri said.

The children, Diego Fabian Ortega, 5, and Luis Gonzalo Ortega, 3, were en route to Sunland in the San Fernando Valley to be reunited with their mother, Rocio Ortega.

The 22-year-old woman was hospitalized in critical but stable condition after being shot as many as a dozen times, he said.

She will require additional surgery and can't speak but has been communicating with police in writing, he said.

Me too, BB.

Still praying for Mom and for Dad to be caught before he harms anyone else.  Shot 12 times.
