Search for missing woman unsuccessful

ALBION, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Calhoun County mother holds out hope as the search for her missing daughter approaches the three week mark.

“You know in a few days we start a new year, and possibly without her. I don't want to think about that,” said Diane Cousino. "I'm petrified I'll never see my daughter again."

Tomorrow will be three weeks since 33-year-old Heather Cousino walked away from her Albion home.

Her family says she's manic depressive and can't function without her medication.

Yesterday more than three dozen volunteers searched fields near her house, but this search, like many others, turned up nothing.

Even with a $1,000 reward on the table investigators haven't come up with any solid leads.

"We scratch our heads everyday thinking what's the next step," said Jamie Jones of the Missing You Foundation. "It's not over until we find something."

Volunteers hoped to also search the Kalamazoo River yesterday but weather kept them from going in.

They plan to hit the water as soon as some of the ice has melted.

CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. (WOOD) - A search group looking for a missing Albion-area woman located human remains in a wooded area near her home.

Searchers with the Missing You Foundation located the remains just before 5 o'clock Friday evening in a wooded area near 25 1/2 Mile Road and B-Drive South near Albion.

However, investigators emphasized that they have not determined whether or not the remains are Cousino's due to how much the body has decomposed. Officers were not even able to determine if the body is that of a male or a female.

It is also unclear when the person died or how long the body had been in the area, although investigators said they believe it had been there for "quite some time".

"At this point we're securing the scene and bringing the crime lab in and beginning our investigation," said Calhoun County Sheriff's Department Captain Matt Saxton. "We haven't moved any part of the scene yet."

Updated: Searchers find human remains near Albion
December 16, 2011 5:57 PM

CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – On Friday a search team found a body near the home of a woman who went missing just over a year ago.

The search was organized by a group called Missing You, which was out looking for 33-year-old Heather Cousino, who has been missing since December 9th, 2010.

The searchers found the human remains not far from where Heather lived, near the corner of B Drive and 25 ˝ Mile Road in Albion.

The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office and MSP out of Lansing are currently inspecting the remains and investigating the scene. Searchers found the skeletal remains in a patch of trees no more than 75 feet off the road.

Detectives are not yet able to say that the remains belong to Heather, but there are no other open missing persons cases in Calhoun County right now.

After 53 weeks of wondering, searching and dead ends, the mystery may be at an end.

At this point, there’s nothing that has changed to make us believe there was any foul play,” Saxton said.
