Vermont State Police and the FBI have called an "urgent" press conference with an update on the Brooke Bennett case. The press conference starts at 6 p.m. in Bethel.

Brooke is the missing 12-year-old from Braintree who disappeared a week ago. She was last seen at a Randolph convenience store with her uncle, Michael Jacques. Police have called Jacques a person of interest in her disappearance. They have been searching his property in Randolph.

Police call 'urgent press conference' in Brooke Bennett disappearance

RANDOLPH -- Investigators into Brooke Bennett's disappearance have launched an intensive search of a wooded area near the Bethel-Randolph town line, and an "urgent" news conference has been called for 6 p.m.

Law enforcement has cordoned off Crocker Road in Randolph -- near the home of Brooke's uncle, the investigation's lead suspect. A neighbor said the search is focused on a sugarhouse off Crocker Road.

The search comes after information became public that Brooke, a 12-year-old Braintree girl, was last seen alive at the home of her uncle, Michael Jacques, on June 25.

Attorney General Bill Sorrell told a reporter an announcement is scheduled to be made at 6 p.m. at Whitcomb High School in Bethel.

The steady passage of police cars, marked and unmarked, raised dust on Crocker Road, otherwise closed to traffic.

Witnesses say that police have moved their operations center from Jacques house to the sugarhouse.

My heart breaks for that little girl.  What was her mother thinking when she allowed Brook's uncle by marriage to be alone with her daughter for even two minutes.

There are many compromises that have to made in life but ... the physical safety and emotional well-being are not among them.

BETHEL -- Police have discovered the body of Brooke Bennett near a sugarhouse off a country road in Randolph.

The body of the 12-year-old Braintree girl, missing since June 25 and the subject of Vermont's first Amber Alert, was found today near Crocker Road -- just a few miles from the home of her uncle.

The uncle, Michael Jacques, 42, is the lead suspect in Brooke's disappearance. She was last seen at his home on East Bethel Road the day she vanished.
