LAKE FOREST, Calif. —  A man who allegedly shot his estranged wife in the face and fled with his 9-year-old son may have switched his car for a motor home, authorities said Thursday.

An Amber Alert was in effect throughout California for Lonnie Ramos, 46. He was believed to be driving a rented 39-foot purple-and-gold Fleetwood Providence motor home with the license plate number 5EGW556, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said.

Ramos was possibly in the San Diego area and Border Patrol agents were notified in case he tried to head for Mexico, sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said.

Amormino said Ramos was considered "armed and extremely dangerous."

Ramos apparently jumped out from behind a car or bushes and shot his estranged wife in the face with a semiautomatic weapon about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when she drove to his home in the Portola Hills area to pick up their son, Ryan, for a custody exchange, Amormino said.

The 41-year-old woman, whose name was withheld, was critically wounded but was expected to survive, he said.

Police hunt man accused of shooting estranged wife

PORTOLA HILLS - The couple had hostile encounters when exchanging custody of their 9-year-old son in the past, and on Wednesday evening, authorities said, 46-year-old Lonnie Ramos grabbed a 9mm and shot his estranged wife in the face.

Investigators are looking for Ramos and his 9-year-old boy, Ryan, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Authorities are also looking for two of Ramos' vehicles that have gone missing and a 39-foot RV he rented Tuesday night.

According to court records, Ramos and his 41-year-old wife Gynnae Ramos had been undergoing a contentious divorce battle since May 2003, in which both had filed restraining orders against the other. One of the major points was the custody of their son Ryan, which was awarded primarily to his mother.

After she filed for divorce in May 2003, Gynnae Ramos sought to reduce the amount of time that Lonnie Ramos had custody of their son, stating she had been threatened by Ramos and she was afraid he would take out his anger on their child.

"You're going to get yours in the end," Gynnae Ramos said her husband told her during Ryan's pre-school graduation on May 17, 2007, according to an affidavit.

According to court records filed by Ramos and his attorney, Ramos stated he believed his wife was trying to prevent him from having a relationship with his son.

It was about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when Gynnae Ramos drove to her husband's home at the 19000 block of Torres Way, authorities said. She was accompanied by a friend and a 4-year-old girl when Ramos allegedly shot through the car's windshield, hitting her in the face and the torso.

The woman in the front seat grabbed the wheel from Gynnae and drove to a Ralphs shopping center at 26751 Portola Parkway. Paramedics treated the wounded woman and took her to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, where she is listed in stable condition.

Authorities issued an Amber alert Thursday, hoping to receive tips on the location of Ramos' 2004 Chevrolet Suburban, with license plate 5LTC712, or red Porsche convertible with license plate 4BWU827.

Investigators now believe Ramos may be driving a 39-foot, gold and purple, Fleetwood Providence RV with a license plate of 5EGW556, Amormino said.

It is unclear why the three vehicles are all missing, but it could be Ramos planned to switch vehicles to go undetected, Amormino said.

On Thursday, neighbors said they were stunned to hear the man they saw playing ball with his son could be involved in the shooting.

"His life was his kid," said Michelle Riel. "Everyone is shocked."

Along with the divorce and custody battles, neighbors said Lonnie Ramos had been going through hard financial times. According to records, Ramos owned his own business – Big Star Construction. In Jan. 31, his general contractor license expired. In 2005, he purchased a $1.2 million home on Torres Way, records show, where the shooting took place.

"He just went off the deep end," said neighbor Jason Riel. On Tuesday, "he was really out of it."

Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Department responded three times to Lonnie Ramos' home in Portola Hills, Amormino said. Two of those calls were regarding a custody exchange. At Gynnae Ramos' Orange home, police responded once in 2007.

During one exchange, according to court records, the couple argued through an open car door as Lonnie Ramos tried to drive away with Ryan in the passenger's seat.

On Aug. 15, 2005, Lonnie Ramos filed a motion of contempt, stating that Gynnae failed to pass custody of their son on several occasions.

On Feb. 1, 2006, Gynnae requested to have Lonnie Ramos' custody reduced.

"He is extremely aggressive and verbally abusive," Gynnae Ramos stated in the declaration. "He seems mentally unstable."

According to court records, Lonnie Ramos was checked into a hospital in Dallas, Texas in November 1999 after attempting to commit suicide.

After the shooting Wednesday, Ramos attempted to buy plane tickets at John Wayne Airport but was unable to do so because he refused to issue an identification or submit a name, Amormino said.

"He knows we're looking for him," Amormino said.

RV Found in Arizona

EL CENTRO -- The search for an Orange County man accused of shooting his wife and kidnapping their son has shifted to a tiny hamlet on the Mexican border near Yuma, Arizona after the suspect's rented recreational vehicle was found there.

Wednesday's statewide Amber Alter resulted in Imperial County sheriff's deputies recovering a rented recreational vehicle parked just north of the Mexican border at Andrade, about five miles west of Yuma and 160 miles east of San Diego.

"Witnesses stated the suspect and the abducted child were last seen crossing the border into Mexico," Orange County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said. He added that it is possible the RV was parked there as a ruse, and that Lonnie Ramos, 46, and his son may have doubled back into the United States.

The rented 39-foot purple and gold Fleetwood Providence motor home was the subject of a statewide Amber Alert after Ramos allegedly shot his estranged wife and kidnapped their 9-year-old boy Wednesday evening in the southern Orange County bedroom community of Portola Hills. Gynnae Ramos, 41, was shot as she drove to her estranged husband's home to pick up her son. She was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center where she remained in critical condition, but was expected to survive. Officials say she has been helping investigators.

Still missing are two of Ramos's vehicles: a 1992 red Porsche 944 convertible with a black top, California license plate 4BWU827; and a 2004 white Chevy Suburban, California license plate 5LTC712.

The suspect is known to have family in Texas and Washington, D.C., according to the Orange County Register.

On Thursday, investigators were also checking out reports that Ramos made an unsuccessful attempt to buy plane tickets at John Wayne Airport. He was unable to do so because he refused to produce identification or submit a name, the Register reported.

According to court records, Gynnae Ramos filed for a divorce in May 2003, and has since been in a contentious divorce battle with Ramos. She made statements to the court that she had been threatened by Ramos and was afraid he would take out his anger on their son, the Register reported.

In a court affidavit, Gynnae Ramos said her husband told her, "You're going to get yours in the end," during Ryan's pre-school graduation on May 17, 2007, the newspaper reported.

Missing boy found at Mexican church

MISSION VIEJO – A nine-year-old boy, who according to police was kidnapped by his father Wednesday, is safe and in the custody of authorities at the U.S. consulate in Juárez, Mexico, officials said Sunday night.

Ryan Ramos was dropped off by his father, Lonnie Ramos, 46, at the Church of Latter-day Saints in the Mexican border town of Juárez around 11 a.m. Sunday, officials said.

Lonnie Ramos has not been found, although Mexican authorities have reported that an American was involved in a traffic collision, which authorities are following up on.

Authorities say Lonnie Ramos shot his estranged wife, Gynnae Ramos, 41, in the face with a
9 mm handgun when she came to his house to pick up her son Wednesday evening.

A crowd of Gynnae Ramos' relatives and investigators made the announcement that Ryan was safe at a press conference across the street from Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, where she is staying. Gynnae Ramos spoke with investigators throughout their search and is expected to recover from her injuries, her mother, Karen Schiffilea, said.

“He's a great kid and he deserves to be back,” Schiffilea said. “It's a miracle. He has angels watching over him … What we've been going through the past 10 years has been tough. Now my daughter can sleep at night.”

Schiffilea did not elaborate on those difficulties, but police have responded to Lonnie Ramos' rural Portola Hills home at least twice because of disturbances. The two have filed restraining orders against each other. Gynnae Ramos filed for divorce five years ago.

A task force of investigators from several agencies is in Juárez and neighboring El Paso, Texas, coordinating the boy's return to the U.S. The lead investigator – Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Gary Smith – said he is not sure when the child would board a plane back to California. Authorities hoped to have Ryan in El Paso on Sunday, Smith said.

Sheriff Sandra Hutchens expressed her gratitude to investigators and the news media for placing emphasis on the case, particularly on publicizing the Amber Alert.

“It's hard to remember the days before the Amber Alert, but it's been extremely helpful,” Hutchens said.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert on Wednesday, with the description of Lonnie Ramos' 2004 Chevrolet Suburban and red Porsche, believing that Ramos had abducted his son.

Ramos had rented a Fleetwood Providence RV on Tuesday night. The vehicle was discovered abandoned Saturday at a border crossing at Andrade. He tried to buy a pair of plane tickets for himself and his son at John Wayne airport Wednesday night, Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said, but wasn't allowed because he wouldn't show ID or give his name.

Ryan Ramos was found alone Sunday in a Mormon church in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and was expected home in Orange County on Monday, sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino said. He had been missing since Wednesday, when his father, Lonnie Ramos, allegedly shot his estranged wife in the face during a custody exchange and took off with their child, authorities said.

On Monday, authorities announced that Lonnie Ramos, 46, had been killed in a car accident in Juarez, Amormino said. He did not have any other details.

The boy was in El Paso, Texas, across the border from Juarez, awaiting a private flight to Southern California, Amormino said.

Gynnae Ramos, the boy’s mother, was in good condition at Mission Hospital, Orange County sheriff’s Lt. Kurt Vasentine said. She filed for divorce in 2003 and had been locked in a divorce and custody battle with Lonnie Ramos, court records indicated.

After the shooting Wednesday, a statewide Amber Alert was issued for two cars that Lonnie Ramos might have been driving. A motor home was added after someone reported renting it to the fugitive.

Authorities then got a tip the father and son had been spotted crossing the border by foot near Andrade, about 160 miles east of San Diego. The motor home rented by Ramos was found in the area Saturday.

Ramos apparently tried to buy plane tickets for himself and his son at John Wayne Airport on Wednesday night but was unable to do so because he refused to show any identification or provide his name, Amormino said.

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a man accused of kidnapping his young son in California has been found dead in Mexico.

The 9-year-old was found safe in a Mexican Mormon church in Ciudad Juarez yesterday after a desperate 5-day search.

Authorities say the boy's father has since been found dead in a car crash in Juarez. No further details were released.

The child had been missing since Wednesday, when his father allegedly shot his estranged wife in the face during a custody exchange and took off with the boy.

Authorities say the child has been taken to El Paso, Texas, across the border from Juarez, to await a flight to Southern California. The boy's mother remains hospitalized in good condition.

According to court records, the boy's mother filed for divorce in 2003, leading to a bitter custody battle.

This is such a sad case all the way around.  Sounds like the dad has some mental health issues.  Now he has died in a car accident and my guess is he stepped into traffic intentionally.  Very sad especially for the son who has had to deal with it all.

I agree, sad for all involved. Including the father who has obviously got mental problems, I would like to give the courts some of the blame. Without knowing the particulars, I would still like to say that these divorce proceedings beginning in 2003 and still continuing 5 years later? could drive many a sane person to do the unthinkable.......Hopefully now the survivors can get on with their lives.

Missing boy found safe, fugitive dad killed by bus

SANTA ANA, Calif. — A desperate five-day search for a 9-year-old boy abducted by his father in Southern California ended in Mexico, where the man died after being hit by a bus and the boy was found safe across town, authorities said Monday.

Ryan Ramos was found alone Sunday in a Mormon church building in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and arrived in Orange County early Monday, where he was reunited with his family, sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said.

He had been missing since Wednesday, when his father, Lonnie Ramos, 46, allegedly shot his estranged wife during a custody exchange and took off with their child.

Gynnae Ramos, the boy's mother, was in good condition Monday at Mission Hospital, where she was recovering from gunshot wounds to the chest, stomach and right eye, Amormino said. Her son was taken to her bedside, he said.

Lonnie Ramos called his father in Washington, D.C., around 11 a.m. Sunday to say that he had left the boy at the church building and that he, too, was in Ciudad Juarez. Lonnie Ramos converted to Mormonism about eight months ago, Amormino said.

The grandfather notified Orange County detectives. Several hours later, Mexican state police contacted U.S. officials with word that an American tourist who strongly resembled Lonnie Ramos had been in critically injured in a traffic accident, Amormino said.

Marisela Ramirez, a spokeswoman for Ciudad Juarez's transit department, said Lonnie Ramos was hit by a bus at 2:35 p.m. Sunday while crossing one of the city's busiest streets and died on the way to the hospital. The bus driver fled but was arrested several blocks away, Ramirez said.
Amormino said suicide had not been ruled out, but Ramirez and local prosecutors in Mexico said Monday the death appeared to be accidental.

Amormino said when Ryan Ramos was found, he wasn't aware that his mother had been shot or that his father was dead.

"He believed he was on an outing with his father," Amormino said.

Amormino said that detectives now believe Lonnie Ramos planned the shooting.

The break in the case came over the holiday weekend when a tipster reported seeing the father and son crossing the Mexican border by foot near Andrade, about 160 miles east of San Diego.

Gynnae Ramos filed for divorce in 2003, and the two had been locked in a bitter divorce and custody battle, court records show.

Gynnae Ramos brought a friend to the meeting Wednesday to act as a witness because she felt there might be trouble, and instead of pulling into the driveway, she passed the house once, made a U-turn and was shot as she approached from the other side, he said.
