Rapids-area man still missing, search continues

 July 7, 2008
The search continues into a third day for a Wisconsin Rapids-area man who has not been seen since he left a Fourth of July fireworks show.

Authorities are looking for Keith Karnatz, 23, of Grand Rapids, whose boat and vehicle still are parked at a friend’s house in Wisconsin Rapids. He didn’t show up for work at 7:30 a.m. today at Carpet City in Plover.

“We’re still dealing with the same situation we had yesterday,” said Dave Lewandowski, Grand Rapids police chief. “This is not like him to be gone any period of time, especially since Friday night.”

Foul play is not suspected at this point, Lewandowski said.

Karnatz has been missing since 11 p.m. Friday when he was last seen at the fireworks in downtown Wisconsin Rapids. He was reported missing about 11 a.m. Sunday after family and friends had not seen or heard from him and could not reach him on his cell phone.

Search efforts started late Sunday afternoon and continued until dark. Officials concentrated on routes Karnatz might have taken if walking to his friends’ or parents’ house, where he lives.

Officials are asking residents and businesses in the search area from 16th Street South by Lincoln High School and east to Grand Rapids to “really check their property,” said Kurt Heuer, Wisconsin Rapids police chief.

“We’re going to utilize some folks we’ve used in the past, to use dogs in the area he was last seen,” Heuer said.

Wisconsin Rapids Police Department personnel will pick up the search from the Riverview Hospital area.

“We’re going to try and get civil defense (air) out to give us a hand,” Lewandowski said.

Volunteers are not needed at this point, officials said. Those who want to help can sign up at the search command center at the Grand Rapids Fire Department and wait until they might be needed. Those who want to volunteer should come prepared with long pants, long-sleeved shirts and closed-toe shoes.

“Some of the areas were going to be covering is kind of swampish — tall grass, thick trees,” Heuer said.

The American Red Cross of South Wood County will be utilized at the command site.

Search continues for missing Grand Rapids man

July 8, 2008
WISCONSIN RAPIDS — Personnel from fire departments throughout central Wisconsin and volunteers helped search for a 23-year-old Grand Rapids man who has been missing since Friday.

Keith Karnatz was last seen by friends at the Wisconsin Rapids fireworks display Friday night, Grand Rapids Police Chief Dave Lewandowski said. Karnatz was reported missing at about 11 a.m. Sunday. A check of his cell phone records showed officials that he last used it at 11:15 p.m. Friday.

Searchers looked for Karnatz until nightfall Sunday, and Grand Rapids officials began calling for volunteers from fire departments at about 9 a.m. Monday. The first groups went out at about 10 a.m. Monday, Lewandowski said.

Throughout the day, a patrol including three bloodhound dogs and at least two boats led by Wisconsin Rapids Police Department Chief Kurt Heuer, searched along the banks of the Wisconsin River, Lewandowski said.

Thunderstorms delayed the search for two hours Monday evening, as volunteers gathered around a television placed outside the Municipal Building to receive news about the storm.

The day’s final search party went out at about 7:15 p.m. to search a wooded area around Two Mile Avenue and Sampson Street near the South Wood County Airport.

Grand Rapids Fire Chief Scott Bernette was running operations Monday, with Lewandowski acting as second in command, keeping volunteers and media updated on the search’s progress. A steady flow of emergency personnel and volunteers made overseeing operations easier, Lewandowski said.

“We’re getting enough people to search the areas, but not too many to handle,” he said.

The American Red Cross and The Salvation Army were called to assist in operations. The Red Cross used donations to keep volunteers fed and hydrated, said Pattie Kelnhofer, disaster director for the Wood County Chapter.

“The response we get from the community is just incredible,” Kelnhofer said.
Officials planned to expand the search area today.

“This isn’t over by a long shot,” Lewandowski said.

2 missing men found; 3rd man arrested

July 9, 2008
WISCONSIN RAPIDS -- A man was arrested Tuesday after authorities found two missing men at a house southeast of Wisconsin Rapids.

Keith Karnatz, 23, who had been missing since Friday, was found hours after investigators called off the search for him.

Another man, reported missing in Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday, was found at the house near the intersection of Mill Road and 52nd Street in the town of Saratoga. Investigators were withholding further information about the second man.

Both missing men were in good condition, but shaken,
according to preliminary reports, Wood County Sheriff Thomas Reichert said.

Authorities also were not immediately releasing the name of the man taken into custody in connection with the investigation, but witnesses said he was arrested at house where Karnatz was found.

The investigation is in the early stages, and more information was not available Tuesday night, Reichert said. The Wood County Sheriff's Department and Wisconsin Rapids and Grand Rapids police are working together on the case.

Karnatz's discovery came after volunteers from more than 20 emergency agencies helped search an area that stretched from Wisconsin Rapids to Karnatz's town of Grand Rapids home, east of the city, over a period of three days.

Karnatz had been enjoying the Fourth of July fireworks in Wisconsin Rapids when he disappeared about 11 p.m. He told friends he was going to walk home.

Wisconsin Man Accused of Chaining and Sexually Assaulting 2 Men
Wednesday, July 09, 2008

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wisconsin —

A 46-year-old man abducted two men in their 20s, chained them up at his rural house and sexually assaulted them before one managed to escape and get help, according to court documents filed Wednesday.

Edward Lanphear, 46, was ordered held on $1 million bond, but court records online did not show charges filed against him as of Wednesday evening. The Wood County jail confirmed he remained in custody but would not release any attorney information for him.

A 23-year-old man was held in Lanphear's home from Saturday until Tuesday, according to an affidavit filed by sheriff's investigators seeking support for Lanphear's arrest. The young man had told friends Friday that he was going to walk home after a fireworks show, the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune reported.

Lanphear was driving the man home when he pulled over, told him he was a police officer and handcuffed him, the affidavit said.

When one of the handcuffs became loose, Lanphear hit the man in the head and knocked him out, the document said. When the man revived, he was chained up in Lanphear's basement.

The affidavit said Lanphear used a knife to cut off the man's clothing and sexually assaulted him at least three times while he was restrained.

The document says Lanphear attached a string to a shotgun and connected the string to the man's chains, warning him that if he moved the gun would shoot him, the affidavit says.

Another affidavit says that sometime Sunday or Monday a 21-year-old man got drunk at a Wisconsin Rapids bar and passed out in his car, then later woke up naked and hanging in Lanphear's garage by locked chains.

He told authorities Lanphear hit him with a metal pipe and sexually assaulted him. His hands were bound by chains and flex cuffs, and he was blindfolded, the affidavit says.

The man somehow escaped and fled, still wearing chains, to a house across the street, where people there called police. Officers who went to the scene found the 23-year-old in the basement.

The 23-year-old was taken to a hospital and treated for injuries, but the affidavits don't give information about medical treatment of the other man.

The 21-year-old man identified his captor, saying Lanphear frequented the same Wisconsin Rapids bar, the documents said.

Holy Cow ... When you think you have heard it all.

Thank God the guy got away or they both probably would have ended up dead.

It is scary to really think there are so so many nuts out there loose in the world.
