(CNN) -- Authorities are searching for a female soldier missing after a fire burned her apartment near Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

Fayetteville, North Carolina, police released this undated photo of 2nd Lt. Holley Wimunc.
1 of 2 Fayetteville police identified the missing soldier as 2nd Lt. Holley Wimunc, 24.

The fire at Wimunc's apartment had gone out by the time authorities arrived at 9:22 a.m. Thursday, but investigators found evidence of arson, police said.

A neighbor, Roland Petty, told CNN affiliate WRAL-TV that he saw a man running from the area on Wednesday night and smelled smoke, although he didn't associate it with the building at the time.  Watch police at work at Wimunc's complex »

In a court filing for a protective order, Wimunc said that in May, her husband had knocked her down, held a loaded gun to her head and then threatened to commit suicide, WRAL reported.

The court documents indicate the husband, John Wimunc, is a Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune, the station reported.

A Camp Lejeune spokesman told WRAL that police had spoken to John Wimunc on Thursday about his wife's disappearance.

"I haven't seen any violence. I know [Wimunc's husband] was not living here anymore, but that's all I know," a neighbor told WTVD-TV, another CNN affiliate.

Both stations reported that Wimunc's car was still in the parking lot at the apartment.

Wimunc's disappearance is considered a missing person case.

Wimunc is assigned to Charlie Company, Womack Army Hospital at Fort Bragg, police said.

A statement from Fort Bragg said Wimunc is a nurse from Lafayette, Louisiana, who works at the hospital's mother and baby ward.

"Womack Army Medical Center staff is very concerned about our soldier and her safety," Col. Terry Walters, commander of WAMC, said in the statement. "The staff and members of her unit are being supported by the command and with counseling available through our unit chaplains."

The blaze comes nearly three weeks after the body of a pregnant soldier was found in a hotel near Fort Bragg.

Spc. Megan Lynn Touma , 23, was seven months pregnant at the time of her death, authorities said.

Investigators say they are treating Touma's death as a homicide

Second Missing Ft. Bragg Soldier Is Divorcing Husband
Friday , July 11, 2008

 FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  —

A missing 24-year old soldier from Fort Bragg whose apartment was found burned this week is going through a divorce with her husband, police said Friday.

Col. Terry Walters, the commander of 2nd Lt. Holley Wimunc of Lafayette, La., said in a statement that staff at Womack Army Medical Center, where Wimunc worked, was "very concerned about her safety."

The Fayetteville ******* reported that Wimunc had filed a domestic violence complaint against her husband two months ago.

• Click here for a video.

Wimunc, assigned to Fort Bragg's Charlie Company at Womack, filed papers on May 19 that resulted in a temporary restraining order against 23-year-old John Patrick Wimunc. John Wimunc got drunk, held a loaded handgun to her head and his head, Holley wrote in the complaint.

It was not immediately clear if Wimunc had an attorney.

Officials responded to a call about the strong odor of gasoline at the Morganton Place Apartments in Fayetteville and found a smoldering fire that had burned two bedrooms. Police are calling it an arson and missing person's investigation.

Wimunc's car was still in the parking lot when police arrived. The Fayetteville ******* said police towed the car to examine it.

"Right now we're still processing a crime scene of arson where she lived at," said Fayetteville Police Department Lt. David Sportsman. "Yesterday we were contacting family and friends to see if anybody knew where she was at before we released the information today. We wanted to make sure she wasn't somewhere else."

Wimunc arrived at Fort Bragg in August 2007, base officials said.

Also Friday, authorities said a second autopsy of a pregnant Fort Bragg soldier found dead in a Fayetteville motel June 21 confirms she was the victim of a homicide. Army Spc. Megan Touma, 23, of Cold Spring, Ky., was found June 21 in the bathroom of a motel room after a maintenance supervisory smelled a four odor coming from her room. The cause of her death hasn't been released.

The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology conducted the second autopsy at the request of Fayetteville police and military investigations.

Missing Ft. Bragg Soldier Filed Court Order Against Woman for Alleged Online Harassment

July 12, 2008
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  —  A missing 24-year-old soldier from Fort Bragg whose apartment was found burned this week had sought court protection from an Illinois woman who allegedly tried to "embarrass" her and her husband online, FOX News has learned.

The soldier, 2nd Lt. Holley Wimunc of Lafayette, La., was granted a "no contact" order last year against Lindsay Hunter of Avon, Ill., by a North Carolina judge.

Wimunc wrote in court documents that Hunter repeatedly had posted photographs of herself and Wimunc's Marine husband, John Patrick Wimunc, on the Internet with comments, and that Hunter had been harassing the couple.

It wasn't clear how Hunter and the Wimuncs knew each other, if at all. A Raleigh TV station reported that it had reached Hunter by phone, but she had declined to comment.

Holley Wimunc, assigned to Fort Bragg's Charlie Company at Womack, also filed court papers about two months ago alleging domestic violence on the part of her husband, whom she was divorcing at the time of her disappearance.

Wimunc's complaint resulted in a temporary restraining order against her 23-year-old husband.

John Wimunc had gotten drunk, held a loaded handgun to her head and his head, choked her and threatened to kill himself and her, Holley Wimunc wrote in the complaint.

Police have interviewed John Wimunc, but he has not been named as a suspect in his wife's disappearance.

Col. Terry Walters, Wimunc's commander, said in a statement Friday that staff at Womack Army Medical Center, where Wimunc worked, was "very concerned about her safety."

Charred remains found near Camp Lejeune
Posted: Jul. 13 8:30 p.m.
Updated: Jul. 13 11:07 p.m.

Authorities say they found charred human remains on Sunday off Old Folkstone Road in Sneads Ferry.

It was not immediately known if the remains are of a man or woman. However, Onslow County District Attorney Dewey Hudson told WRAL late Sunday that they are investigating whether the remains could be those of a missing female Fort Bragg soldier.

2nd Lt. Holley Lynn Wimunc, of Lafayette, La., was declared missing on Thursday after a fire was set at her apartment near Fort Bragg. The 24-year-old worked as a nurse at Womack Army Medical Center.

"We did in fact find human remains in what appeared to be a shallow grave. (The remains) are being guarded now by law enforcement officers. The crime scene will be processed first thing tomorrow morning," Hudson said.

Officials responded to a call Thursday about the strong odor of gasoline at the Morganton Place Apartments in Fayetteville and found a smoldering fire that had burned two bedrooms. Police are calling it an arson and missing person's investigation.

"I feel confident that this case will end in an arrest," Hudson added.

Wimunc arrived at Fort Bragg in August 2007, base officials said.

Also last week, authorities said a second autopsy of a pregnant Fort Bragg soldier found dead in a Fayetteville motel June 21 confirms she was the victim of a homicide. Army Spc. Megan Touma, 23, of Cold Spring, Ky., was found June 21 in the bathroom of a motel room after a maintenance supervisory smelled a four odor coming from her room. Remains found near Lejeune may be missing soldier

http://www.fayobserver.com/article?id=299153

Quote
Investigators suspect they have found the charred remains of Army 2nd Lt. Holley Lynn Wimunc, a Fort Bragg nurse who has been missing since Thursday, Onslow County District Attorney Dewey Hudson said Sunday night.

Forestry officials workers fighting a brush fire in the Sneads Ferry area of Onslow County found a body in a shallow grave late Sunday afternoon, Hudson said. The site is near the southern border of Camp Lejeune Marine Base, where Holley Wimunc’s estranged husband, Marine Cpl. John Patrick Wimunc, is based.

“There was physical evidence that indicated the body had been there for a substantial period of time,” Hudson said.

Quote
He would not discuss whether investigators have a suspect or suspects.

The Jacksonville Daily News, citing unnamed sources, reported Sunday that investigators found “bladed weapons” near the body and that it was mutilated.

Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown told The Daily News that forensic experts from the Federal Bureau of Investigation would arrive today to remove the remains.

Remains Found Near Camp Lejeune That of Missing GI

Monday , July 14, 2008

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  —

Burned remains found near Camp Lejeune are that of a missing North Carolina officer, the soldier's family confirmed to FOX News on Monday.

The charred body of Army 2nd Lt. Holley Wimunc, 24, was found late Sunday in the Sneads Ferry area. She had been missing since Thursday after a fire was set at her Fayetteville apartment.

"It is with profound sadness that our family just received the news from authorities that our beloved daughter Holley is dead," Wimunc's father Jesse James said in a statement. "Since last Thursday's shocking news about Holley's burned apartment and her missing person status, our family through the country has nonetheless been holding on to a thin thread of hope that she would be found alive. Today, that thread of hope broke as her body was discovered."

Husband of dead Fort Bragg nurse charged with arson

Posted: Today at 7:04 a.m.
Updated: 3 minutes ago

Authorities have charged the Marine husband of a dead Fort Bragg nurse with first-degree arson for setting the couple's apartment on fire.

John Wimunc was being held in the Cumberland County Jail. One of his fellow Marines, Kyle Alden, was also charged with arson.

The father of Army 2nd Lt. Holley Wimunc told WRAL Monday morning that authorities have told him his daughter is dead.

"Since last Thursday's shocking news about Holley's burned apartment and her missing person status, our family throughout the country has nonetheless been holding onto a thin thread of hope that she would be found alive," said Jesse James. "Today, that thread of hope broke as her body was discovered."

(Read the father's full statement.)

Crews fighting a brush fire Sunday found charred human remains, and investigators said they suspected they are those of Holley Wimunc, of Dubuque, Iowa.

Crews found the remains off Old Folkstone Road, near Chadwick Acres Road  in Sneads Ferry, near Camp Lejeune.

"At the end of this journey of sadness, we wish to thank the many, many people who have assisted us so quickly and competently in the search," James said. "We are grateful to those people ... around the country for their prayers for her safe return. Those prayers and support will help us to make it through this impossibly tough time."

Holley Wimunc was declared missing on Thursday after a fire was set at her apartment near Fort Bragg. The 24-year-old worked as a nurse at Womack Army Medical Center.

Holley Wimunc was going through a divorce from her husband. Fayetteville police and State Bureau of Investigation agents spoke with him last week during their investigation.

Officials responded to a call Thursday about the strong odor of gasoline at the Morganton Place Apartments in Fayetteville and found a smoldering fire that had burned two bedrooms.

"I feel confident that this case will end in an arrest," Onslow County District Attorney Dewey Hudson said late Sunday. He later added that there could be more than one arrest.

Wimunc arrived at Fort Bragg in August 2007, post officials said.

 Army nurse Holly Wimunc

Army nurse Holley Wimunc has been missing since a fire Thursday at her apartment in Fayetteville.

On Monday, her father told Raleigh television station WRAL that authorities informed the family that a body found in the brush fire Sunday was that of his daughter.

Sheriff: Soldier killed in Fayetteville, body taken to Onslow County
Posted: Today at 7:04 a.m.
Updated: 3 minutes ago
A Fort Bragg nurse was slain in Fayetteville last week before her body was taken to Onslow County and burned in a shallow grave, Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown said Monday.

Army 2nd Lt. Holley Wimunc was declared missing Thursday after a fire was set at her apartment near Fort Bragg. Fayetteville police on Monday charged her husband, Marine Cpl. John Patrick Wimunc, and a fellow Camp Lejeune Marine with arson.

Neither man has been named a suspect in her death.

Fayetteville police have scheduled a 3 p.m. news conference to discuss the case. Watch it LIVE on WRAL.com.

Crews fighting an Onslow County  brush fire Sunday found charred human remains, and investigators said paraphernalia at the scene "gave investigators strong suspicions" the remains were those of Holley Wimunc.

Brown declined to specify what was found at the site, which was about a mile and a half off Old Folkstone Road, near Chadwick Acres Road in Sneads Ferry, near Camp Lejeune.

A shallow grave had been scooped about a foot deep into the ground in the forest, and the body, which was in pieces, was dumped into it, Brown said. When the remains were set afire, it ignited the brush fire, which burned slowly for a couple of days before being extinguished Sunday, Brown said.

"All indications are what happened with the body happened in another county," he said.

A severed hand clenched in a fist was one of the few body parts not consumed in the fire, he said.

Brown and other Onslow County investigators said the scene reminded them of Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, whose charred remains were found in a shallow grave in January behind the Jacksonville home of Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean. Laurean was arrested in April in Mexico and is awaiting extradition to face charges in her death.

I agree and that is his booking photo.  I saw on TV this morning a clip of him in court yesterday and he did look like the above photo but without the smirk.
