BREAKING NEWS: Body of missing waitress found
Tuesday, July 22, 2008
Last updated: Tuesday July 22, 2008, EDT 5:24 PMBY WILLIAM LAMBSTAFF WRITER
The body of a Cliffside Park woman who went missing in September has been found, authorities said.

Prosecutors had been preparing to try Thalia Stathis's boyfriend for her murder even though they didn't have a body.

However, authorities confirmed moments ago that the body of a woman found July 9 in Nassau County is that of Stathis.

They reached that determination through dental records and DNA verification made today, said Bergen County Prosecutor's Chief of Detectives Joseph Macellaro.

Stathis's boyfriend, Hugues Francois, pleaded not guilty to murder charges earlier this year and has been held on $2 million bail at the Bergen County Jail. His case was the first in more than 22 years in which Bergen County authorities proceeded with a homicide prosecution without having recovered a body.

Stathis, who worked at the Arena Diner in Hackensack, went missing on Sept. 14 after a shift waiting tables at the Essex Street eatery. Francois was arrested soon after and charged with drug possession and violation of Megan's Law.

Prosecutors said blood found in the trunk of Francois' car is consistent with that of Stathis' parents. They also said Stathis had shown up at work with bruises and told co-workers she wanted to break up with Francois.

Authorities said Francois also forged Stathis' check to pay a bill five days after she disappeared.

"He was a target from Day One," said Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli.

Stathis's body was found by an off-duty New York State trooper in a canvas laundry bag on the shoulder of the Southern State Parkway in North Merrick, L.I., according to published reports.

A troop commander at the time said the remains had "undergone extensive decomposition," leaving only bones.
