I was just talking with sharon in another thread and it brought to mind again just how many musicians have died ---often prematurely.........and thought we could remember  them again here.

Bob Marley - Three Little Birds

Bob Marley
Robert "Bob" Nesta Marley OM (February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981) was a Jamaican musician, singer-songwriter and Rastafarian. He was the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist for the ska, rocksteady and reggae bands: The Wailers (1964 – 1974) and Bob Marley & the Wailers (1974 – 1981). Marley died nearly thirty years ago, but remains the most widely known and revered performer of reggae music, and is credited for helping spread Jamaican music to the worldwide audience.[1]

Marley's best known hits include "I Shot the Sheriff", "No Woman, No Cry", "Exodus", "Could You Be Loved", "Stir It Up", "Jamming", "Redemption Song", "One Love" and, together with The Wailers, ""Three Little Birds",[2] as well as the posthumous releases "Buffalo Soldier" and "Iron Lion Zion". The compilation album, Legend, released in 1984, three years after his death, is the best-selling reggae album ever (10 times platinum[3]), with sales of more than 12 million copies.[2]

John Lennon-Imagine

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEOkxRLzBf0

John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (born John Winston Lennon; 9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English rock musician, singer, songwriter, artist, and peace activist who gained worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles. As a member of the group, Lennon was one of the lead vocalists and co-wrote the majority of the band's songs with bassist Paul McCartney.

In his solo career, Lennon wrote and recorded songs such as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine". Lennon revealed his rebellious nature and wit on television, in films such as A Hard Day's Night, in books such as In His Own Write, and in press conferences and interviews. He was controversial through his work as a peace activist, artist, and author.

Lennon had two sons: Julian Lennon, with his first wife Cynthia Lennon, and Sean Ono Lennon, with his second wife, avant-garde artist Yoko Ono. After a self-imposed retirement from 1976 to 1980, Lennon reemerged with a comeback album, but was murdered one month later in New York City on 8 December 1980. In 2002, respondents to a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted Lennon into eighth place. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Lennon number 38 on its list of "The Immortals: The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time" and ranked The Beatles at number one.

Roger Troutman - Megamix

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZC9rpGPgSs

Roger Troutman, 47

Born: Nov 29, 1951 in Hamilton, OH
Died: Apr 25, 1999 in Dayton, OH

Zapp's Roger and Larry Troutman Found Dead In Apparent Murder-Suicide

Brothers Roger and Larry Troutman, founding members of seminal '80s funk outfit Zapp, were found dead Sunday (April 25) morning near their Dayton, Ohio recording studio in an apparent murder-suicide.

Roger Troutman, 47, was found just outside the studio with several gunshots to his torso, according to the Associated Press. He died while in surgery at the Good Samaritan Hospital and Health Center.

Roger's brother Larry was found dead in a car a few blocks away with a single gunshot wound to the head. Investigators believe the wound was self-inflicted, but won't know for a few days whether a handgun found in the vehicle was the same as that responsible for Roger's death.

Roger and Larry Troutman founded Zapp in 1975, along with their brothers Lester and Terry Troutman. The group became an important part of the funk scene in the early '80s with such hit records as "More Bounce to the Ounce," "Dance Floor," and "Doo Wa Ditty."

Roger, lead singer and guitarist for the group, frequently used a vocoder voice- distortion box for his lead vocals. The group's future-funk vibe provided the transition between the sloppy grooves of Parliament in the late '70s and the early electro foundations of hip-hop in the early '80s. Later in the decade, Roger went solo and earned a crossover hit with the record "I Want To Be Your Man." He later rejoined the family group under the moniker Zapp & Roger.

After depleting a finite reserve of James Brown and George Clinton samples, hip-hop artists also took a liking to Zapp. Most recently, Roger Troutman was used by 2Pac and Dr. Dre for their 1996 award-winning collaboration "California Love." ~Jazzbo

ROLLING STONES - BRIAN JONES - LIKE A ROLLING STONE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31ZGtJ5JzFg

++++++++++++++

Brian Jones
Rolling Stones
Age 27

 (b. Lewis Brian Hopkin-Jones, 28 February 1942, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England
d. 3 July 1969, Cotchford Farm, Sussex)

While the Stones were re- establishing themselves, Brian Jones was falling deeper into drug abuse. A conviction in late 1968 prompted doubts about his availability for US tours and in the succeeding months he contributed  less and less to recordings and became increasingly jealous of Jagger's leading role in the group. Richards' wooing and impregnation of Jones' girlfriend Anita Pallenberg  merely increased the tension. Matters reached a crisis point in June 1969 when Jones officially left  the group. The following month he  was found dead in the swimming  pool of the Sussex house that had once belonged to writer A.A. Milne. The official verdict was ‘death by misadventure’.  ~music central '96

"The many theories of murder mostly revolve around the many people who were at Brian's home that night, and whose police statements all clash and contradict one another. These theories carry a lot of weight and there seems to be too much proof to be just rumours. To find out more about the murder of Brian, look out for the books: 'Golden Stone-The Untold Life And Death Of Brian Jones' by Laura Jackson or 'Paint It Black-The Murder Of Brian Jones' by Geoffrey Giuliano.

Swedish girlfriend claims Stones' Brian Jones murdered

Thursday, July 08, 1999

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - A Swedish woman who found Rolling Stones star Brian Jones drowned in his swimming pool 30 years ago has said she believes the guitarist was murdered.

Anna Wohlin, who was Jones' girlfriend at the time of his death, has broken her years of silence with a new book, "Murder of Brian Jones '' published this week.

Wohlin, now 53, told Swedish newspaper Expressen it had taken her this long to be able to talk about the night of July 3, 1969, when she found 27-year-old Jones' dead in the pool at his luxury farmhouse in Hartfield, England.

``It hurt so much and went so deep. It was as if it had not happened to me,'' Wohlin said in the interview. ``I was in such shock that I was sick. Then I repressed it -- I got married.'

A verdict of misadventure was recorded at the inquest into Jones' death. He was believed to have been swimming while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

But Wohlin, who now runs a women's clothing shop in Stockholm, insists that by the time of his death Jones had stopped using hard drugs and had cut back on his drinking.

She claims builder Frank Thorogood, now also dead, killed Jones in a dispute over money. Thorogood was doing some work for Jones at his farm.

This theory gained credibility in 1994 when a recording of an alleged death bed confession by Thorogood came to light. Police briefly reopened the investigation but made no progress.

Wohlin said she decided after her recent divorce to tell her version of Jones' death.

``I felt that I wanted to tell what really happened, mainly for the sake of his son and his closest friends, who also believed that he died when he was on drugs. That wasn't true. I knew what was going on,''  she said.

Great White - Once Bitten twice Shy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLQbKBwrs88

Ty Longley, Age 31
Great White

(Born: September 4, 1971, Sharon, PA; Died: February 20, 2003,Warwick, RI)  Great White Guitarist
Ty Longley, the lead guitarist for heavy metal band Great White, is among the latest victims confirmed dead in last week's devastating Rhode Island nightclub fire. The guitarist's name was one of 13 added to the list of fatalities on Monday, bringing the number of those killed to 97. Longley, who joined Great White in 2000, took to the stage of the Station with his band mates accompanied by a burst of pyrotechnics, which touched off a blaze that engulfed the venue in less than three minutes. Nearly 100 fans were injured and taken to a local hospital in the town of West Warwick. As of Monday, about 80 were still hospitalized, half of those listed in critical condition. The 31-year-old Longley was reported missing soon after the event, but his death was not confirmed until today. A native of Sharon, Pennsylvania, the musician was not an original member of Great White during its heyday in the late '80s and early '90s, but joined the band on tours three years ago. Longley was planning to move in with his pregnant girlfriend, Heidi, after the end of this tour. His family was said to be in shock over the tragedy. They and other families of victims traveled to the site this weekend to grieve over the loss of their loved ones. A message posted Monday on Great White lead singer Jack Russell's official Website (www.planetjr.com) expressed the band's condolences to all the victims in the tragedy and mourned the loss of Longley, who members called their "best friend."  "The thoughts and prayers of everybody associated with the band goes out to every person affected by this tragedy," the message reads. "There are no words to express our sadness at the loss everybody has suffered."  Speaking on Good Morning America, Great White attorney Ed McPherson added, "The band's a mess."  The group has returned to its home base in Los Angeles and is said to be cooperating with authorities--the same apparently can't be said for Station owners Jeffrey Derderian and his brother Michael Derderian. According to State Attorney General Patrick Lynch, the siblings have not exactly been forthcoming in answering investigators' inquiries into what happened Thursday. In fact, Jeffrey Derderian has not spoken with authorities since the night of the fire, while his brother hasn't talked at all.  Facing the possibility of criminal charges and million-dollar civil suits, the Derederians and Great White have been playing the blame game, focusing on whether the band had permission to set off a pyrotechnics display in the venue.  Russell, has said repeatedly that the Station's management gave the rockers the okay to do so, a claim refuted by the Derderians in a statement released on Friday.  Club owners who've previously hosted Great White on this tour have come forward with conflicting accounts over whether the band sought approval to use pyrotechnics.  Dominic Santana, owner of New Jersey's famed Stone Pony, said the band used the sparklers during a show there on Valentine's Day without asking, while club owners in other cities have said just the opposite.  On Sunday, about 400 family members of the victims gathered around the blackened remains of the Station to mourn privately. They hugged, prayed and left flowers, photographs and stuffed animals. Officials put up black fabric around them to keep out the news media and other gawkers.  "These families are going through such a tragedy, such an emotional odyssey right now, and their hearts are broken, and they still don't know in many cases whether their loved one has been positively ID'd," Rhode Island Governor Don Carcieri said Monday.  Of the 97 people who lost their lives, only 55 have been positively identified.

Queen singer is rock's first major AIDS casualty
By Jeffrey Ressner

FREDDIE MERCURY, THE OUTLANDISH frontman for Queen, whose worldwide hits like ``Bohemian Rhapsody'' and ``We Are the Champions'' combined gaudy theatrical pomp with heavy-metal bluster, became the first major rock star to die of AIDS when he succumbed to complications from the disease on November 24th at his London home. He was forty-five years old.

Mercury, whose real name was Frederick Bulsara, had not performed with Queen in concert since 1986. He had become a virtual recluse over the past two years, yet he repeatedly denied reports that he had contracted AIDS until the day before his death.

``The time has now come for my friends and fans around the world to know the truth,'' he said in his statement, explaining that he had waited so long to make the announcement because ``my privacy has always been very special to me.''

Although Mercury's condition was long rumored in the tabloid press and virtually an open secret in the music industry, his death still startled many fans and colleagues. Bouquets from Elton John, David Bowie, U2, Ringo Starr and the Scorpions adorned the West London Crematorium, where a brief funeral service in the Zoroastrian faith was held for his family and a few close friends, including the surviving Queen members, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon.

``Of all the more theatrical rock performers, Freddie took it further than the rest,'' says Bowie, who collaborated with Mercury and Queen on their 1981 hit ``Under Pressure.'' ``He took it over the edge. And of course, I always admired a man who wears tights. I only saw him in concert once, and as they say, he was definitely a man who could hold an audience in the palm of his hand. He could always turn a cliche to his advantage.''

Beginning in the early Seventies, the flamboyant Mercury - who cited Jimi Hendrix and Liza Minnelli as his main influences - led Queen through eighteen albums that sold 80 million copies worldwide, amassing almost a dozen U.S. hit singles, including his campy ``Killer Queen,'' the Elvis spoof ``Crazy Little Thing Called Love'' and the bass-heavy anthem ``Another One Bites the Dust.'' Queen's popularity nose-dived in the United States during the Eighties, but the group remained popular in England and around the world.

Queen laced British glam pop with swooping arias, corny vaudeville themes and heavy-rock bombast, but it was Mercury's wicked taste for wretched excess that set the band apart. ``Freddie was clearly out in left field someplace, outrageous onstage and offstage,'' says Capitol-EMI president and CEO Joe Smith, who headed Queen's American label, Elektra Records, at the peak of the group's success. ``He was the band's driving force, a tremendously creative man.''

Elektra's release of Mercury's overwrought, six-minute mock opera ``Bohemian Rhapsody'' - complete with a goofy choir chirping ``Mama mia, Mama mia'' - was only one example of his musical extravagance. He was even more extreme when it came to his concert performances, appearing in leather storm-trooper outfits or women's clothes and taking an arch, gay-macho stance that both challenged and poked fun at the decidedly homophobic hard-rock world.

Offstage, Mercury was known for his wild antics and the lavish gifts he bestowed upon friends. To celebrate his forty-first birthday, for instance, he flew eighty pals to an exclusive hotel on the resort isle of Ibiza, where they were treated to fireworks displays, flamenco dancers and a twenty-foot-long cake carried by waiters dressed in gold and white costumes. ``All I can remember about the whole time we were making records and hanging out was that it was like one continuous party,'' says producer Roy Thomas Baker, who worked on five Queen albums.

Michael Hutchence honoured by INXS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWNfGcLaxWM

Michael Hutchence 1960-1997, lead singer, INXS.
Almost 38 years after his birth on 22 January 1960, his death was announced to the world today, Saturday 22 November, 1997.

Perhaps to some, Michael Hutchence is INXS. Perhaps to others INXS is Michael Hutchence.

To me, Michael was the heart of INXS, the other band members the soul, an important characterisation of the band that always meant INXS were never INXS without both it's heart and soul.

I will sadly miss the band in it's completeness, and thank one and all for the many memories and years of enjoyment from the skills of their art.

News of the death - how Saturday 22nd November, 1997 unfolded:

The early reports of his death filtered through on television and radio about 1300 hours, AEST (Sydney) time. The news announced that he had been found dead in his hotel room at the exclusive Sydney Ritz Carlton Hotel. There was initial press speculation that he had suffered a drug overdose, but these theories were later replaced with the news that his death was in fact suicide, by hanging himself.

Police in a later press conference stated that his prescribed medication was found in the room, but that no illegal drugs had been found in his hotel room. They were not pursuing the investigation as having suspicious grounds, and that a leather belt had been removed from the room for analysis. Michael's body was relocated under police escort to the morgue, and there has been no mention of any form of farewell note.

Later came newsreels of INXS, replaying for us the initial videos of INXS, originally formed in Perth, and radio stations playing "Burn for You" as a tribute.

People from all around the world flocked to the #INXS channel of efnet IRC on the net from that moment on. Some came to offer condolences, some came to confirm the sudden news, others came to discuss their theories on why this had happened.

It was interesting to note that the most common question besides "is it true?", was "why did he do this?".

Clearly, it came as a shock to all. Having witnessed the band rehearsal (filmed less than 24 hours prior to his death), of a very relaxed M.H. joking about, it is hardly credible that the man would have any reason in the world to end early his life. The preparations of the upcoming Australian east-coast tour, and the seemingly more peaceful life for Michael and Paula, particularly after the comparative storm of the court custody case and the police raid, there seems little apparent reason to most of us as for any motive - which simply due to it's unanticipated nature makes it all the more shocking.

Paula Yates is believed to be enroute to Australia, although there have been conflicting reports as to the accuracy of this.

Tim Buckley: Age 28
(b. 14 February 1947, Washington, DC, USA, d. 29 June 1975).

Tim Buckley died in June 1975, of a heroin overdose.
The story goes like this: After a short tour culminating in a sold-out show at an 1,800-capacity venue in Dallas, the band partied on the way home, as was customary. An inebriated Tim proceeded to his good friend Richard Keeling's house in order to score some heroin. As Underwood tells it, Keeling, in flagrante delicto and unwilling to be disturbed, argued with Buckley : "Finally, in frustration, Richard put a quantity of heroin on a mirror and thrust it at Tim, saying, 'Go ahead, take it all', like a challenge. As was his way, Tim sniffed the lot. Whenever he was threatened or told what to do, he rebelled." Staggering and lurching around the house, Buckley had to be taken home, where Judy Buckley laid him on the floor with a pillow. She then put him  to bed, thinking he would recover; when she checked later, he'd turned an ominous shade of blue. The paramedics were called but it was too late.  Tim Buckley was dead.

Jeff Buckley - Grace

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siNsgbIWhAQ

+++++++++++

Jeff Buckley:
Age 30

(b. 17 Nov 1966, d. 29 May 1997)

Since he was the son of cult songwriter Tim Buckley, Jeff Buckley faced more expectations and pre-conceived notions than most singer/songwriters. Buckley began playing as a high school student in New York. Eventually, he moved to Los Angeles to study music; while he was there, he performed with several jazz and funk bands, as well as playing with Shinehead, a leader in the dancehall reggae movement.  Buckley began a solo career playing clubs and coffeehouses, building up a considerable following. Soon, he signed a record deal with Columbia Records, releasing the Live at Sin-e EP in November of 1993.  It received good reviews, yet they didn't compare to the raves Buckley's full-length debut, 1994's Grace, received.
On the night of May 29, he and a friend traveled to the local Mud Island Harbor, where Buckley spontaneously decided to go swimming in the Mississippi River and leaped into the water fully- clothed.  A few minutes later,  he disappeared under the waves; authorities were quickly contacted,  but to no avail -- on June 4, his body was finally found floating near the city's famed Beale Street area.

Howard Duane Allman
Birth:   Nov. 20, 1946
Nashville
Davidson County
Tennessee, USA
Death:   Oct. 29, 1971
Macon
Bibb County
Georgia, USA

Musician. The Allman family was living near Norfolk, Virgina, when just one day after Christmas in 1949 Army Sergeant Willis Alllman was murdered. His widow, Geraldine, took her sons Gregg, two, and Duane, three, to live in Daytona Beach, Florida. In 1959 while on a family trip the boys saw B.B. King perform. Their musical dreams were born at that show. They both started playing in local groups and Duane soon quit school to work on his music. They formed a band called The Escorts and later changed the name to The Allman Joys. When the band moved to Los Angeles in 1967 they became the Hour Glass. Around this time he heard blues artist Taj Mahal perform the Willie McTell classic "Statesboro Blues" and this inspired him to learn slide guitar. Using an empty glass Coricidin cold medicine bottle that he wore over his ring finger he would inspire a technique that would later be used by such artists as Bonnie Raitt and Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd. By 1968 the band was ready for a break so they moved back to Florida. Playing on demo recordings for many different artists would be his entrance into the world of rock and roll. The brothers worked separately for a time. Duane worked on the recording of "Hey Jude," the 1968 Wilson Pickett album. Pickett called him "Skyman" because he soared when he played. His friends had often called him "Dog" because of his shaggy looks. His new nickname became "Skydog." Eric Clapton heard the "Hey Jude" recording and was impressed with the guitar tracks. Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler also heard the recording and immediately wanted to use him on sessions with R & B artists. He recorded with Clarence Carter, King Curtis, Aretha Franklin, Otis Rush, Percy Sledge, B. B. King and others. Otis Redding's manager Phil Walden wanted him to meet Jai Johanny ‘Jaimoe' Johanson because he wanted to form a band. Duane headed to Florida and started jam sessions with Johanson, Butch Trucks, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, and Reese Wynans. In March of 1969 Gregg was called to replace Wynans on keyboards. The Allman Brothers Band was formed. "Dreams" was the first song they learned and then Gregg went on to write "Whipping Post" and "Every Woman" for the first album. They moved to Macon, Georgia in April to be closer to Walden and Capricorn Sound Studios. Their debut album "The Allman Brothers Band" was released in September, 1969. The follow up, "Idlewild South," was released in August, 1970. After hearing the recording of "Hey Jude," Eric Clapton had long wanted to record with him. In August of 1970 he played on "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" with Clapton. In March of 1971 "At Fillmore East" was recorded. It would become a classic live rock album. The band was on a break when he suffered his motorcycle accident. He was leaving a birthday party for Linda Oakley. While trying to swerve to avoid striking a truck in an intersection his Harley Sportster struck the back of the truck and he flew from his bike which landed on and skidded with him. The bands next album was called "Eat A Peach" and it included live and recorded materials featuring Duane. The name of the album is taken from one of his interviews. "Little Martha" is the only song he wrote. Two albums were posthumously released "Duane Allman: An Anthology in 1972 and Duane Allman: An Anthology Volume II in 1974. He left behind one daughter, Galadrielle. There are no commercial video releases available that include Duane with the band. Thirteen months later the band would lose member Raymond Berry Oakley, III on the same stretch of highway on a motorcycle. On March 5, 1998, The Georgia State Senate passed a resolution designating a portion of State Highway 19 in Macon from the intersection of Holt Avenue to College Street as "Duane Allman Boulevard." Stephen "Stevie" Ray Vaughan (October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990) was an American blues-rock guitarist, whose broad appeal made him an influential electric blues guitarist.[1] In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Stevie Ray Vaughan #7 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,[2] and Classic Rock Magazine ranked him #3 in their list of the 100 Wildest Guitar Heroes in 2007.

Keith Relf- The Yardbirds live in Germany part1

Keith Relf: Age 32
The Yardbirds
Rennaissance

 1944, Richmond, Surrey, England, d. 14 May 1976; vocals/harmonica).
The legacy of the Yardbirds has refused to die, particularly in the wake of the fame enjoyed by its former guitarists.  After leaving the Yardbirds, Relf and McCarty stayed with music, first forming a folk duo called Together and then founding Renaissance. The band scored its biggest hit, the top ten single Northern Lights, in 1978 after both former Yardbirds had left. Relf departed the group in 1972, and died in his bathtub on May 14, 1976, electrocuted by his own guitar.   His last album with the heavy metal band. Armegeddon. (Yardbirds)

Received: 5/3/0
Keith Relf did not die in the bathtub.
He had fitted out the basement of his house as a recording studio and this is where he was found on the floor by his son. His guitar was not properly earthed, and although the shock was fairly mild Keith had been ill and was not fit enough to withstand it.

It needs to be cleared up - Keith died as a result electrocution when playing his guitar unearthed and standing over a hidden  gas line by the fireplace - he DID NOT die in the bath. All sites should amend their details

Clifford Lee Burton: Age 24
Metallica

(b. 10 February 1962, USA, d. 27 September 1986, Sweden).
Formed during 1981, in California, USA by Lars Ulrich (b. 26 December 1963, Copenhagen, Denmark; drums) and James Alan Hetfield (b. 3 August 1963, USA; guitar/vocals) after each separately advertised for fellow musicians in the classified advertisements of the American publication THE RECYCLER.  Jef Warner (guitar) and Ron McGovney (bass) each had a brief involvement with Metallica, and at the end of 1982, Clifford Lee Burton, formerly of Trauma, joined the band, playing his first live performance on 5 March 1983. Burton had never been a particularly smooth player, but other band members had not attempted to reign him in. They did try once, however, to persuade him to forego his bell-bottom jeans in favor of more traditional heavy metal garb, but quickly realized the attempt was futile; Burton was set in his ways and rarely influenced by others. In truly bizarre heavy metal fashion, one of his dreams had been to invent a gun that shot knives instead of bullets. The Ulrich, Hetfield, Burton and Hammett combination lasted until disaster struck the band in the small hours of 27 September 1986, when Metallica's tour bus overturned in Sweden on an icy road, killing Cliff Burton.

Robert Palmer was the first artist I saw in concert.  He made a lasting impression on me then and so many more in the U. S. in the years that followed.

Singer Robert Palmer dies at 54

Friday, September 26, 2003 Posted: 11:38 AM EDT (1538 GMT)

LONDON, England --Rock singer Robert Palmer has died in Paris of a heart attack at the age of 54, his manager said.

The British star, whose chart hits in the 1980s included "Addicted to Love," suffered the attack in the early hours of Friday morning, Mick Cater said.

Palmer, who had lived in Switzerland for 16 years, was staying in the French capital with his partner, Mary Ambrose, after traveling from the United Kingdom where he had been recording a TV show.

"I can't say anything else at this point, I'm just in shock," Cater told CNN.

The singer was born in Batley, Yorkshire, in 1949, but spent the majority of his youth on the island of Malta. At the age of 19, Palmer returned to England where he sang with the Alan Bown Set and a soul group, Vinegar Joe, before beginning a solo career in 1974.

He became known as much for slick videos as for his clever combination of rock, rhythm and blues, and reggae sounds with singles that also included "Simply Irresistible" and "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On."

The "Addicted to Love" video, featuring the sharply dressed Palmer and miniskirted models, became one of MTV's most-played clips and sparked protests from some feminists.

"I'm not going to attach inappropriate significance to it because at the time it meant nothing. It's just happened to become an iconic look," Palmer once said of the video.

He formed the Power Station in 1985 with John Taylor and Andy Taylor from Duran Duran, scoring three U.S. hits, including "Communication" and "Get it On."

Despite his chart success he shunned the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. "I loved the music, but the excesses of rock 'n' roll never really appealed to me at all," The Associated Press quoted him as saying.

"I couldn't see the point of getting up in front of a lot of people when you weren't in control of your wits."

Palmer was noted for his dress sense and respect for his fans. "I don't want to be heavy," he said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

"I can't think of another attitude to have towards an audience than a hopeful and a positive one. And if that includes such unfashionable things as sentimentality, well, I can afford it."

Biography:

http://music.aol.com/artist/robert-palmer/biography/1004376

The career of blue-eyed soul singer Robert Palmer was a study in style versus substance. While the performer's earliest work won praise for its skillful assimilation of rock, R&B, and reggae sounds, his records typically sold poorly, and he achieved his greatest notoriety as an impeccably dressed lounge lizard. By the mid-'80s, however, Palmer became a star, although his popularity owed less to the strength of his material than to his infamous music videos: taking their cue from the singer's suave presence, Palmer's clips established him as a dapper, suit-and-tie lady's man who performed his songs backed by a band comprised of leggy models, much to the delight of viewers who made him one of MTV's biggest success stories.

Born Alan Palmer on January 19, 1949, in Batley, England, he spent much of his childhood living on the island of Malta before permanently returning to Britain at the age of 19 to sing with the Alan Bown Set. A year later he joined Dada, a 12-piece, Stax-influenced soul group which soon changed its name to Vinegar Joe; after three LPs with the band -- a self-titled effort and Rock'n'Roll Gypsies, both issued in 1972, and 1973's Six Star General -- Palmer exited to mount a solo career, and debuted in 1974 with Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley, recorded with members of Little Feat and the Meters.

With 1975's Pressure Drop, he tackled reggae, a trend furthered following a move to Nassau prior to 1978's Double Fun, which featured Palmer's first hit, "Every Kinda People." With 1979's self-produced Secrets, his music moved into more rock-oriented territory, as typified by the single "Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)." Palmer's stylistic experimentation continued with 1980's Clues, a foray into synth-pop aided by Gary Numan and Talking Heads' Chris Frantz which yielded the club hit "Looking for Clues."

After 1983's Pride, Palmer teamed with the Duran Duran side project Power Station, scoring hits with the singles "Some Like It Hot" and "Get It On" (a T. Rex cover), which returned the singer to overt rock territory.

After exiting the band prior to a planned tour, Palmer recorded the 1985 solo album Riptide, a sleek collection of guitar rock which scored a number one hit with "Addicted to Love," the first in a string of videos which offered him in front of a bevy of beautiful women.

The follow-up, "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On," continued to play with the sex symbol image and hit number two, as did "Simply Irresistible," the first single from 1988's Heavy Nova. By 1990's Don't Explain, Palmer returned to the eclecticism of his earliest material; without any attendant soft-core videos, sales plummeted, but he stuck to his guns for 1992's Ridin' High, a collection of Tin Pan Alley and cabaret chestnuts. Two years later, Palmer's wide array of worldbeat influences cropped up again on Honey, which also featured guitar work from Extreme axeman Nino Bettencourt. Woke Up Laughing followed in 1998, it was an adventurous, if somewhat odd, collection of non-hit album tracks remixed and in some cases re-recorded.Rhythm & Blues, a slick set of adult contemporary pop, came out in 1999 to lukewarm sales and reviews. After a live album in 2001, Palmer bounced back with the future blues of 2003's Drive. However, Palmer had little time to enjoy it's release. On September 26, 2003 he died suddenly after suffering a heart attack. He was 54. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Thanks for starting this thread BB!  Many good ones so far...some I have even had the pleasure of finding through the years that my sons love too.  Makes me not feel quite an old fogey, lol.  They both have known every word to "Bohemian Rhapsody" for many years now.  Their love of the music also opened doors to conversations that may have otherwise not been discussed at all or "awkward" to say the least.  I'm sure you know what I mean.

Lynyrd Skynyrd

Original Band Members:
Band History
1964
Ronnie Van Zant hits a line drive that strikes Bob Burns in the head, who was watching the game with Gary Rossington. Burns is knocked unconscious but the three became friends and have a common interest in music. They soon form a band along with Allen Collins and Larry Junstrom. That fall 'The Noble Five' plays their first gig for $10.
1965
The core of Lynyrd Skynyrd- singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Gary Rossington, guitarist Allen Collins, bassist Leon Wilkeson, and drummer Bob Burns- is formed at a high school in Jacksonville, FL, initially as the group, 'My Backyard.' The name is later changed to Lynyrd Skynyrd to immortalize school gym teacher Leonard Skinner, a legendary antagonist of longhaired students. Ronnie Van Zant enters into a brief marriage with Nadine.
1966
Ronnie and Nadine's daughter, Tammy Michelle is born.
1968
Lynyrd Skynyrd records 'Michelle' and 'Need All My Friends.' The latter is released as their debut single on Shade Tree Records, a label based in their hometown.
1969
Lynyrd Skynyrd wins a battle of the bands contest in Hemming Park located in Jacksonville, FL. Lacy Van Zant (Ronnie's father) drives the band to Atlanta to record two songs as the prize. They record 'Spoonful' and 'Michelle.' Lacy also gives them $120 for a Bogan PA for vocals.
1970
Allen Collins marries Kathy Johns. The band starts rehearsing at Hell House. By this time all the members have dropped out of Robert E. Lee High School. Before a gig at Jay's Forest Inn, Ronnie Van Zant introduces the band as Leonard Skinner, a high school gym teacher who tormented them for their long hair. They later change the spelling to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Roadie Billy Powell joins the band as keyboardist. The band asks to be let out of their contract with Shade Tree Records.
1971
Bob Burns leaves the band and is replaced by Rickey Medlocke. In January Lynyrd Skynyrd record their demo album at Quinvy Studios in Muscle Shoals. Larry Junstrom leaves the band.
1972
On November 18th Ronnie Van Zant marries Judy Seymour Rickey Medlocke leaves the band and Bob Burns returns. Leon Wilkeson replaces Larry Junstrom.
1973
The debut album 'Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd' is released and goes gold. In November they open for The Who on their 'Quadrophenia' tour. At Funochios, an Atlanta club, Al Kooper notices Lynyrd Skynyrd and signs them to his Sounds Of The South label. Rickey Medlocke rejoins the band giving them two drummers, but leaves the band soon after. Leon Wilkeson leaves the band but soon rejoins. Ed King joins the band as bass player but later switches to guitar.
1974
The band releases their second effort, 'Second Helping,' which spawns their first charting U.S. single 'Sweet Home Alabama.' The song is seen as a southerner's response to Neil Young's 1971 song 'Southern Man.' The single reaches #8 on the charts, with the album itself hitting #12 (earning yet another gold disc)
1975
The band releases their third album, 'Nuthin Fancy,' and it goes gold. The single from the album is 'Saturday Night Special.' 'Freebird' is re-released as a single, and garners notable national airplay, reaching the top 20 in the charts. The band embarks on 'The Torture Tour.' Bob Burns leaves the band. Ed King leaves the band. Artimus Pyle joins the band. The Honkettes, comprised of Leslie Hawkins, JoJo Billingsley and Cassie Gaines become a part of the band. The band tours the UK for the first time in support of the group Golden Earring.
1976
In September, Gary Rossington is injured in a car accident in Jacksonville, which inspires 'That Smell.' Steve Gaines joins the band. The new effort, 'Gimme Back My Bullets'- produced by Tom Dowd- will reach Top 20 and become the band's fourth consecutive gold record. 'One More For The Road' release becomes the group's largest-selling album of their career thus far with over a million copies sold. The live version of 'Freebird' will once again chart. The response in the UK is such that the band will perform alongside the Rolling Stones, amongst others, at the Knebworth Festival. The band tours with The Rolling Stones.
1977
Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins present a platinum album awarded them for 'One More For The Road' to the Mayor of Atlanta, in appreciation of the band's Atlanta fans. Another album would be presented to the Fox Theatre in Atlanta where the album was recorded. 'Street Survivors,' The band's second platinum selling record is released. On October 20th, tragedy would strike the band as Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines (Steve's sister and one of Skynyrd's back-up singers), and road manager Dean Kilpatrick are killed when the band's rented plane (short on fuel) crashes into a swamp in Gillsburg, Mississippi, while en route to a gig at Louisiana University. Rossington, Collins, Powell, Wilkeson, and Leslie Hawkins, are all seriously injured but survive the crash. Out of courtesy and good judgement MCA Records withdraws the sleeve of the just released album 'Street Survivors,' which pictures the group standing in flames. The album will become the band's second platinum selling album, hitting #5 on the U.S. album chart.
1978
A single , 'What's Your Name,' from the album titled 'Street Survivors' escalates up the charts to the #13 position, while another single, 'You Got That Right' follows suit by also charting. The band will release another album, 'Skynyrd's First and Last,' which contains previously unreleased recordings from 1970-1972. It will also go platinum, marking the third consecutive album to do so for the band.
1979
MCA releases a double compilation album 'Gold and Platinum.' Surviving members of the band, with the exception of Artimus Pyle, form the Rossington-Collins Band, fronted by Dale Krantz.
1980
The debut album by the Rossington-Collins band, 'Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere' will feature the single 'Don't Misunderstand Me,' and will achieve gold status. Lynyrd Skynyrd's double compilation, 'Gold and Platinum' ascends into the Top 15 and also becomes double platinum. This will total four consecutive platinum albums for the band. Allen Collins' wife Kathy dies.
1981
The Rossington-Collins Band releases their second album, 'This Is The Way,' which is dedicated to Allen Collin's wife, Kathy, who died a year earlier. Although garnering considerable acclaim the album will be the last by the band.
1982
Gary Rossington and Dale Krantz marry in July. In December, Lynyrd Skynyrd releases 'Best Of The Rest,' a compilation of rare tracks and outtakes.
1984
The remaining members of The Rossington-Collins Band begin planning a band of their own which becomes the Allen Collins Band.
1986
Gary and Dale Rossington form a band called Rossington. Their album 'Returned To The Scene Of The Crime' is released on Atlantic Records. Allen Collins runs his car off the road in a crash that will leave him paralyzed from the waist down. The crash took the life of his girlfriend.
1987
MCA Records would release the album 'Legend.' The compilation-produced by Tom Dowd- will contain previous B-sides, as well as unreleased and uncompleted songs by the original Lynyrd Skynyrd. A new Lynyrd Skynyrd is formed in September comprising Rossington, Powell, Pyle, Wilkeson, King, Johnny Van Zant (vocals), Randall Hall ( a long-time friend of the band and member of The Allen Collins Band), along with Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Bristow on background vocals. The band makes their first public appearance at the Charlie Daniel's Volunteer Jam XIII and will eventually perform more than 30 dates on a reunion tour, marking the tenth anniversary of the fatal plane crash.
1988
'Southern By Grace Of God,' a double live album featuring tracks recorded on the recent tour, would be released on MCA Records.
1989
MCA releases a Lynyrd Skynyrd greatest hits package titled 'Skynyrds Innyrds.'
1990
Allen Collins dies of respiratory failure caused by pneumonia, a complication of his paralysis.
1991
The band releases 'Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991' marking their return to the recording studio, the first new material in over 14 years. Again produced by Tom Dowd, it left no doubt that one of rock and rolls greatest bands was back with a vengeance. It featured the tracks, 'Smokestack Lightning,' 'Keeping The Faith,' 'Southern Women,' and 'Pure and Simple.'
1992
Artimus Pyle leaves the band, citing personal differences.
1993
Atlantic Records releases the album, 'Last Rebel,' which comes out twenty years after their first album. Kurt Custer joins the band as drummer. Leon's good friend and former bassist of The Rossington Band, Timmy Lindsey, stood in for Leon from June thru the end of that year, during the Last Rebel Tour. Leon was unable to be with the band for health reasons during that time.
1994
Lynyrd Skynyrd releases their first completely acoustic album, 'Endangered Species,' on Capricorn Records.
1995
Ed King becomes ill with congestive heart failure and leaves the band. 'Freebird . . . The Movie' premieres in Atlanta.
1996
The band signs a multi-album agreement with CMC International Records. Rickey Medlocke of Blackfoot rejoins the band, this time as guitarist. Hughie Thomasson of the Outlaws is also added as guitarist.
1997
'Twenty,' the debut for CMC, is released on April 29th to be followed by a world tour.
1998
Johnny Van Zant teams up with brother Donnie Van Zant of .38 Special for 'Brother to Brother,' a long awaited collaboration of these two surviving members of one of American rock's royal families. CMC Records releases 'Lyve From Steeltown' a double CD of newly recorded Skynyrd classics and recent Skynyrd hits along with its accompanying home video. The enhanced CD includes interviews as well as music; an extra bonus for their fans. Michale Cartellone replaces Owen Hale as drummer.
1999
'Edge of Forever' and '20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Lynyrd Skynyrd' are released. Lynyrd Skynyrd hit the road for the summer on the heels of the past summer's hugely successful tour. The band ends the 20th century on a national tour with ZZ Top.
2000
'Then And Now' is released. Lynyrd Skynyrd headlines a summer tour as well as embarking on their first European tour in 3 and a half years. Their first Christmas album, 'Christmas Time Again,' is completed in July and hit the stores in November.
2001
Lynyrd Skynyrd hits the road again on a North American tour with Deep Purple and Ted Nugent. On July 27th, bassist Leon Wilkeson passes away in his sleep in a hotel room near Jacksonville, FL. Ean Evans, a long time friend of the band, joins as the new bass player. RIAA certifies that the band has sold more than 23 million records.
2002
CMC Records International (now called Sanctuary Records) releases 'Turn It Up,' a compilation of Lynyrd Skynyrd tunes.
2003
Lynyrd Skynyrd celebrates their 30th anniversary by releasing 'Vicious Cycle' on May 6th, their first studio album in three years. Gibson Custom Art and Historic Division releases the Limited Edition Gary Rossington Les Paul guitar.
2004
The band tours heavily to celebrate 30 years of Hard Rockin'. Lynyrd Skynyrd LYVE is released. Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers Band join forces for the first time to Co-Headline 10 shows. In August of 2004 Lacy Van Zant, often referred to as the 'Father Of Southern Rock,' passes away at the age of 89.

Texasmom thanks for sharing. Is that your ticket stub from Robert Palmer concert? That is to cool that you have saved it. Leonard Skynyrd is sure a band that has lost a few good members and taken some hard knocks as a band. Good to listen to them again.......
Sweet Home Alabama can bring any house down LOL even here in ole NY.

King Curtis: Age 37
(b. Curtis Ousley, 7 February 1934, Fort Worth, Texas, USA, d. 13 August 1971).
A respected saxophonist and session musician, Curtis appeared on countless releases, including those as disparate as Buddy Holly and Andy Williams. Curtis did venture to the Fame and American studios, but he preferred to work in New York. ‘In the South you have to restrain yourself to make sure you come back alive’, Ousley said to writer Charlie Gillett. Six months later, in August 1971, he was stabbed to death outside his West 86th Street apartment.
