Detroit Police are confirming the body of a young girl found in a burned out home on Waverly Street is 5 year-old Mariha Smith.
 
The young girl went missing Sunday from a home not far from the vacant where her body was found.
 
The DPD Homocide unit said the family and the prosecutor's office have been notified.

DETROIT –  A DNA test confirmed that the charred body of a young girl found in a burned-out Detroit house was a 5-year-old who was reported missing by her mother, Detroit police said Friday.

An autopsy earlier this week revealed the girl was strangled and her body burned after she died. Her skull also had been crushed. Her death is being investigated as a homicide.

Police said Thursday a man videotaped buying gasoline at a neighborhood gas station was a "person of interest" in the torching of the vacant two-family flat.

The man made a purchase about 7:45 a.m. Sunday, and police asked for the public's help in identifying him.

One woman drove from Southfield to pay her respects. "It just hurts me," said Renee Morton. "My heart hurts."

Mariah's family is seeking donations for the funeral. According to the family, a memorial fund will be set up on Monday.

Meanwhile, the search continues for Mariah's killer. Police have a surveillance video of the man they believe may be a person of interest. The man is described as in his 20s standing 5 feet 9 inches tall with short hair. Last Sunday, the man bought only 41 cents of gas and put in a beer can at a gas station, not to far from where Mariah's body was found.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.

Funeral is Friday for Detroit girl found dead in burned home

Services are planned this week for 5-year-old Mariha Trenice Smith, whose burned body was found in an abandoned Detroit home.

Visitation is noon-7 p.m. Thursday at Peace Funeral Home West, 19530 W. Seven Mile in Detroit.

The funeral will be at noon Friday at Triumph Church, 2760 E. Grand Blvd.; family visitation is at 11:30 a.m.

The family has received donations, including a casket, a funeral home employee said.

The mother told Local 4 that her sister, Quanita Smith, had failed a polygraph and was being held by police. Police said they were questioning Quanita Smith's boyfriend and two cousins.

Quanita Smith was eventually let go by police.

This past week Konesha Smith said she did not think her sister had anything to do with Mariah's death.

However, Konesha Smith said Wednesday at a fundraiser for Mariah that she is changing her mind about what Quanita Smith might know.

"(Quanita) knows something," Konesha Smith said. "If she wasn't involved, then she knows something."

Konesha Smith said police want to question her sister again, but no one can find her.

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Funeral services will take place Friday for five-year-old Mariha Smith.

The funeral is being held at noon at Triumph Church, 2760 E. Grand Blvd.

Mariha vanished from her Detroit home on July 24. The same day, the body of a young child was found burned beyond recognition in an abandoned home. DNA tests later confirmed it was Mariha.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office determined Mariha died of asphyxiation before her body was set on fire.

DETROIT -- Detroit police arrested a man Friday in the killing of 5-year-old Detroit girl Mariha Smith.

Local 4 has learned that the boyfriend of Mariha's aunt has been arrested. No charges had been filed Friday.

Police were searching for the girl's aunt, Quanita Smith, earlier in the week to question her. Konesha Smith said her sister had failed a polygraph test and was being held by police before eventually being let go.

On Friday, family members said she was still missing.

Family members also said that they believe the aunt's boyfriend is the man shown on a gas station surveillance video buying a relatively small amount of gas in a can shortly before the home where Mariha's body was found went up in flames.

On Wednesday, Konesha Smith said she feared her sister Quanita knew more than she was telling investigators.

Person Of Interest In Mariha Smith Case In Court
Investigators Search For Girl's Aunt

DETROIT -- A man who Detroit police is calling a person of interest in the killing of 5-year-old Mariha Smith was in court Monday for an unrelated probation violation hearing.

Darnell Cheatham Jr., 19, was arrested Friday but has not been charged in connection with Mariha's death.

Cheatham was convicted of home invasion in April and has violated his probation twice. For the violations, he was ordered to be held in the Wayne County Jail for 45 days.

Sources said Cheatham is the boyfriend to one of Mariha's relatives.
