any "normal" person knows that when being interrogated it is best to just answer the questions and not elaborate...just the facts.

Without a body, witness or confession, investigators looking into the case of missing toddler Caylee Anthony said they're piecing together a circumstantial case like a large puzzle
And they said they're working to fill the holes that they believe Anthony's attorney will try to punch through their case

On July 16, Orange County investigators used Anthony's own statements as evidence to charge her with child neglect and making false statements. She admitted her child had been missing for one month and she did not go to police for help.

"The horrible thing that happened is -- this is the honest to God's truth -- of everything that I've said, I do not know where she is," Anthony said.

She also admitted that she lied to investigators during their attempts to find Caylee.

"I placed her under arrest," Orange County Sheriff's Office Detective Yuri Melich said.

At Anthony's first bond hearing two weeks later, Melich dropped a bombshell: Anthony was a person of interest in her daughter's disappearance.

"They found hair samples in the trunk of the car that were similar in length and color to that of Caylee. They also found a stain inside the trunk of the car that came up under black light that is questionable that we need to process," Melich said.

On the stand, Melich also said there was an overwhelming stench of death in the car.

"In my experience, the smell that I smelled inside that car was the smell of decomposition," Melich said.

According to other sources, lab tests have been ongoing as recently as this week to "triple check" that evidence. Investigators said they're confident those tests will provide "iron-clad proof" that Caylee's body was in the trunk of the car, how her body was positioned and that strands of her hair fell out after she died.

Investigators have also confirmed that high levels of chloroform were in the trunk, and they said they're close to determining the dates someone researched chloroform on Anthony's computer before Caylee disappeared.

One investigator said there's still a critical element missing: a definite motive and criminal intent for why Caylee's body got in the trunk.

Anthony and her lawyer, Jose Baez, have said all along that she dropped off Caylee with a babysitter in mid-June. Neither the child nor babysitter has been seen since.

"She has absolutely no idea where Caylee is," Baez said.

In a matter of weeks, investigators said they plan to arrest Anthony in connection with Caylee's disappearance.

When asked about the possibility that Caylee was buried in the back yard of the family's home, investigators said they believe if the toddler's body was there, it was later moved, and after a thorough investigation of the yard, they believe it was unnecessary to dig there.

VAN SUSTEREN: What's he like? I realize you're his mother, but what's he like?

ANITA VAN DER SLOOT: Joran is a very outgoing person. He's a sweetheart. To me, he's very warm. We spend Easter vacation in Florida together to visit his school, and we had a lot of fun together, went to Busch Gardens (search), and he was getting me cups of coffee and making jokes. He's very outgoing, loving, caring, fights with his brothers all the time, but I think that's pretty normal. We cannot get him out of bed in the morning to go to school, but once he's there, he's doing great. He got picked up on the morning of his graduation. He graduated with honor, all As and Bs. He did some AP, advanced courses, physics, calculus, AP English.

VAN SUSTEREN: Any drug use or alcohol use by him?

ANITA VAN DER SLOOT: A hundred percent no. No. He is, like, Mom, I would not smoke or I would not use drugs because I am a sporter. I want to make something out of my future. If there would have been anything of that, I would have noticed. I'm a teacher. I work with kids between 12 and 18 years, the last 25 years. So you're used to so many things, problems that appear with your students. You're so alert. And I think you're even more alert with your own children.

VAN SUSTEREN: Any trouble from him at all? I mean, have you ever any trouble with him?

ANITA VAN DER SLOOT: No. A little fight with a friend that got solved by talking to the parents.

VAN SUSTEREN: Never arrested?

ANITA VAN DER SLOOT: Never arrested, no. No.

VAN SUSTEREN: Girlfriends?

ANITA VAN DER SLOOT: Yes, of course. I mean, there were two girlfriends in his life that he had a longer relationship with. One was an American girl, who left, who was part of the school, and she just sent an e-mail totally upset because she finished the relationship and she thought that Joran was too sweet, she needed a stronger man. And another girl was an Aruban girl and — a very sweet girl, came here at home. And that ended about — it was a year ago, and he was really serious. He said, Well, Mom, you know, I'm going off-island to study, so I need to focus more. And there was no really strong relationship.

VAN SUSTEREN: So how does he find himself in this? I mean, if this is a successful 17-year-old, soon to go to college on academic scholarship, why does he find himself sitting over in the jail?

ANITA VAN DER SLOOT: I'm sorry! Something he told me last night, that he still didn't believe it was true. And he said, Mom, don't worry, because I was crying and he was really hugging me. He said, The truth will come forward, and I know that I didn't do anything to the girl. And the truth will come forward. And he was so strong.

Paul was in Holland for the Judges-training, and I had to deal with three children in my own.  And Joran, as many seventeen year olds… I myself work with teens, and he was not the easiest one. Besides that, we had problems with… I had some problems with him. That he came home way too late. I’m rather strict, maybe sometimes I was even a little too strict. And at a certain point, after talking about it with a friend of mine, maybe it’s good we consulted a youth-psychiatrist. Because I just wanted him to have a goal in life, that he thinks well about what he wants with his life, and all this ‘going out’.  I just feel bad about that. And at that time he started playing poker in the casino, and I don’t want my son being in the casino! So I contacted a youth-psychiatrist. He wasn’t 18 yet, he still was 17. He went there twice, that’s correct, and we had one conclusive-conversation after that. And that was it.  So it was really not just about lying.
