I'm a baseball fan, period. I love my Dodgers. In the mid 70s, I knew a Security Guard and he let my daughter (around 8 yrs. old) and me in for free on the top deck above the home plate for every home game. It was in the days of Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Bill Russell, Ron Cey and Steve Yeager. Tommy Lasorda was the Manager. Manny Mota was a base coach. Most of the umpires from those days are no longer with us. My daughter had a red catchers mitt which my boyfriend had oiled and tied tightly around a baseball and you couldn't touch it for a week. So my daughter wore that mitt and always hoped to catch a ball that could never be hit as high at the top deck. Oh, she was so cute in her Dodger cap and jeans with T-shirt eating Dodger dogs and peanuts. She could scream loud enough to make fans of the opposing team turn around and throw popcorn at her and say shut up. We occasionally took my elderly mother (age 74 who knew the Dodgers from NY) who scarfed down Dodger dogs and ice cream. She said this is the best entertainment of all, better than a movie and it costs less.

I forgot to mention that years later, my daughter and I would be on the phone for an entire televised Dodger game and exchange comments. It was so fun.

Louise,

Thank you for sharing your memories.  We, too, have them from Yankee stadium with our boys as they grew in the 80s & 90s.

I was young when the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to CA.  Had many baseball cards of favorites from all teams, including Mantle, Mays & Maris, which I gave to my brother when I got married.  Years later, when my husband and sons got into collecting them, I wished I had kept them.

Thurman Munson was my husband's favorite Yankee.  Don Mattingly was the idol during my sons growing years.   The bond the boys had with their grandfather, dad, other family members & friends has stayed true, and their memories, I'm sure will be with them when they are our age.

I'm thinking a prayer, right now, that your daughter feels your love, the bond between you and the joy of that little red mitt.

During the A's heyday, when they won the World Series in '72, 73, '74 I was a teenager and I used to attend the games with my dad all the time.  We went to regular games, playoff games and of course the World Series.  We'd see Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Rollie fingers.  It was great fun and very exciting for a kid.  I hope to bring my own kids to the playoffs this year, if I can get tix.  My 81 year old dad passed away suddenly last month, and it has added an extra dimension to the penant race this year.  He rooted for the A's til the end, and the kid and I cheered right along with him.  He'll be sorely missed through this and all the seasons!

I'm sorry for your loss, A's Fever.  My father-in-law passed away on the couch one hot July night in '87, watching the Yankees playing horrible game.  Our oldest, nearly 10 yrs old, had called him  around 10pm, asking what his Pop thought...he told him they were 'salamis'.   Our son was the last to speak to him.  He died in his sleep as he always had wished, and watching his beloved Yanks having a bad night.

We undertand.  It's a family thing.

Ummmmm . . . . maybe I was celebrating a wee bit too soon  Embarassed  -- hopefully we will clinch tonight, or tomorrow.  But the A's have dropped three in a row, and the Angels have won three in a row, so we are not making much progress here!
