Woman reports being locked in her own car

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

A woman who found herself locked inside her car Tuesday morning called Lafayette police to help get her out.

The incident happened at 6:55 a.m., when the woman’s black Honda Civic broke down while driving along U.S. 287 and South Boulder Road.

Lafayette police Sgt. Fred Palmer said the woman’s car battery apparently died, rendering the power locks useless.

“When it quit running, she couldn’t get the doors open,” Palmer said. “The dispatcher tried to talk her through it, but the lady said, ‘I have no power, it won’t work.’”

Because it was rush hour and the woman was panicked, Palmer said, officers were sent to help show her how to manually unlock the car from the inside.

While officers were on the way, he said, the woman called dispatchers back and said she figured it out on her own.

Police sent a tow truck to help the woman, Palmer said.

Palmer said it’s the first call of its kind that he can recall.

“We’ve had people locked out — not in,” he said.

Locked in her car... at least it kept her
from driving erratically whilst talking
on her cellphone.

In SoCal, Hondas and Acuras are the car of choice for robbers, gang bangers and illegal immigrants. Whenever there is one of L.A.'s famous, nightly, televised high-speed chases, it will invariably be a Honda or Acura that the criminal is driving.

This story has a familiar ring to it.       Except the woman was my mother and she locked herself in her Buick LeSabre outside a Dairy Queen in a small town.  She called my niece, who came to see how she could help.  Her way of helping was to get the tire iron out of her own car and was considering breaking the window.      Fortunately, my mom was worried it would cost so much to fix the window, so she called me from her cell.  I told her look for the little tab near the door latch or arm rest  and unlock it manually.  It of course worked.       Mom had no clue the manual door lock/unlock was there.     Never had to use it from when she bought her Buick new.  Always used the remote.   I am just GLAD she had her cell phone in the car with her and she could use it.  (That's a whole nother story)
