Authorities searching for missing Helena man

 Independent Record - 10/21/08
Authorities are searching for a 57-year-old Helena man who was reported missing Monday.

Police said John Quist left his residence in the Sunhaven subdivision to put some items in a storage facility on the 1800 block of Joslyn Street at about 11 a.m. and was expected to return home in about an hour.

After his wife had not heard from or seen him, she became worried and called the police at about 5:40 p.m., according to Capt. Dave Jeseritz.

Officers located Quist’s car at the storage facility Monday evening.

There were no signs of foul play, Jeseritz said, adding that Quist has no known medical problems.

According to Jeseritz, Quist attempted to phone his daughter about 1 p.m. but she missed his call. Attempted calls made by authorities went straight to his voicemail.

At about 9 p.m., Lewis and Clark Search and Rescue was called to the scene. The Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office also is aiding in the investigation.

Search efforts began in the area of the storage facility and branch out from there with possible leads, Jeseritz said.

About 1,800 calls went out to residents on the westside of Helena via the emergency automated calling system alerting people to Quist’s disappearance just after 11 p.m.

Anyone with information on Quist’s whereabouts is urged to call police at 447-8461.

Quist is about 6-feet tall, 215 pounds with grey hair and blue eyes. He wears wire-rimmed prescription glasses. He was last seen in blue jeans, a blue and yellow checkered button-down shirt, a brown corduroy button-down over shirt and dark khaki shoes.

Here is a little more of the story:

Missing man found on Mount Helena
By ANGELA BRANDT - Independent Record - 10/22/08
A 57-year-old Helena man who went missing Monday was found Tuesday morning after he made a cell phone call to his home while perched in a tree on the back side of Mount Helena.

John Quist was found about 25 feet up the tree off of Bear Gulch, according to Police Chief Troy McGee. Searchers brought him to safety a few hours later.

An investigator who was at Quist’s home when the call came asked him to call 911 so dispatchers could triangulate the call and get his exact location.

At about noon, officers and search and rescue team members found Quist up in a tree. And after about two hours of talking, authorities and a family member were able to convince Quist — who was disoriented and paranoid — to climb down from the tree, McGee said.

Authorities walked with the blanket-clad man about a mile back down to Bear Gulch Road from the tree he had climbed.

“Why this occurred and why he did this — I don’t know,” McGee said. “We’re very glad that he’s OK.
Quist was transported by ambulance to St. Peter’s Hospital for evaluation.

“From his background, there was no reason for him to go missing. His family said it was odd for him to disappear,” McGee added.

Quist left his residence in the Sunhaven subdivision to put some items in a storage facility on Joslyn Street at about 11 a.m. Monday and was expected to return home in about an hour.

After his wife had not heard from or seen him, she became worried and called the police at about 5:40 p.m.

Officers located Quist’s car at the storage facility Monday evening.

Search efforts started at the facility and then branched out to the nearby countryside.

Police and the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office were joined by the Lewis and Clark Search and Rescue crew late Monday night.

About 1,800 calls went out to residents on the west side of Helena via the emergency automated calling system, alerting people to Quist’s disappearance just after 11 p.m. Monday. Another 7,500 calls were sent out early Tuesday morning.

Authorities continued the search until about 2 a.m. Tuesday and then started again at about 7 a.m. with the aid of a Montana Highway Patrol helicopter.

McGee said it is not known how Quist got to Mount Helena or how long he had been in the tree.
