Hartz dog treats recalled

A type of Hartz dog treat is being recalled because of possible salmonella risks to dogs and people, the Georgia agriculture commissioner said Wednesday.

Two-pound plastic bags of Hartz chicken-basted rawhide chips from lot code JC23282, UPC number 3270096463 may be contaminated, according to Hartz. They should be discarded.

According to a news release from Commissioner Tommy Irvin, consumers can contact Hartz at (800) 275-1414 with questions and to obtain reimbursement.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and in people who handle the rawhide chips, especially children and the elderly.

Symptoms can include fever, nausea, diarrhea and cramping, according to the press release. Animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and can potentially infect other animals or humans.

If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
