I know that there is a Yiddish New Year's wish, but I don't want to insult anyone by attempting to spell it...

Thank you Mrs. Red,

It is called Rosh Hashanah, the first of the two High Holy days. We are in the year 5767. In Israel Rosh Hashanah is celebrated from the sundown of one day until the sundown of the next day. In all other parts of the world, the holiday is celebrated for two sundowns so that all the Jews in different countries and time zones, will all at one time or another be celebrating Rosh Hashanah at the same time.

This year the holiday started at sundown on Friday and will last until sundown on Sunday.

The Yiddish expression is "gut yontiff" (goot yun tiff). In Hebrew it is L'Shanah Tovah (La Shannah -rhymes with Anna-Tow Va).
