PROCES – VERBAAL

We, Jaqueline Josette WINDT, head agent at the Korps Police Force Aruba at the section Surveillance service classified of St. Nicolaas, Antoon Ronald de RUITER, at the Netherlands sergeant of police force region Utrecht district Utrecht south i.o. and at the country decision of the Gouveneur number DWJZ 3470/05 dd July 27, 2005 appointed to extraordinary agent of the Korps Police force Aruba.

Clemens Johannes Maria BURGWAL, at the Netherlands sergeant of police force region Utrecht district horse field and at Landsbeshuit of the governor number DWJZ 3473/05 dd 27 July 2005 appointed to extraordinary agent of the Korps Police force Aruba.

To explain the following.

On Monday August 8, 2005 around 09:48 by our statement, in the office of police force Oranjestad at Aruba, the suspect named Joran Andreas Petrus van der SLOOT, born on August 6, 1987 in the Netherlands and living in Aruba at Montanja 19 came.

The questioning was carried out by our statement WINDT and RUITER.  The statement was taken in the control chamber and the statement captured by the video system internally.  And I, BURGWAL made a summary of the questioning.

I, RUITER, notified the suspect that he is not obliged to answer and also notified him that this questioning was being audio visually taped.

For the description of the questioning chamber and control space, it is referred to in the separately made up warrant. The suspect’s lawyer, Mr. O.R.G. Faarup was also in the chamber at the time of questioning.

The suspect was given the questions and a brief description is reflected as follows:

The suspect was congratulated for his birthday by the interrogator. He smiled.

The suspect was informed that the officer of justice has submitted the paperwork to the court in Aruba regarding extending the indictable offenses and the result will be his provisional detention will become extended after September 4th.

The suspect was informed once again of the statements given by his friend Freddy and Freddy’s nearest relatives.

Also his demands that the press and his lawyer is not correctly informed concerning interrogations, seemingly to put the police force in an angry light. In the press it was, as it happens, written that the lawyers got no time to speak with their client and that he asked that on his birthday of tomorrow to evening leaves was heard (?). The suspect did not answer.

The suspect has represented that he has explained that he and the missing girl walked a bit. And that a declaration is there of someone who has seen the car of Deepak Kalpoe on, some hundreds of meters away from the fisherman’s hut.  He is asked for the logic of and an other one and is asked if he can explain why he then with the other boys who were place. (? Not sure what this paragraph is trying to say)

He was informed once again that there are direct friends that have explained that he has crapped on friends and asked them to lie about sexual activities with a girlfriend of his friends. These boys say that he takes them always in the maling (?) and manipulates.

He was faced once again with the declaration of the girl Martina, who was given something to drink, offered at the sexual community with him and as a result of which her lips tingled.
The suspect did not react.

Then a number of confrontations concerning the date of giving statements by different witnesses, the omissions and the declarations of suspects themselves and the omissions in the declarations of the suspects are presented to the suspect and the timeline of giving the different statements.
The suspect did not react.

The suspect was asked to take off his shoes.  The suspect looked for support from his lawyer, they did not look at him however and he starts to write. He once again made an urgent request, with a slap on table.

The interrogator asked him last why he on that day wore size 14 K-Swiss shoes, whereas he now has on size 10.5. After the suspect showed me his shoe, I pressed on the nose (toe) of the shoe and felt that the toes of the suspect were right and fit appropriate in the shoe.
The suspect did not react further.

Around 11:30 the questioning ended.

Corrections to the translation by a front page poster - MegaShira

just a couple of translation mistakes in the english text.

“Also his demands that the press and his lawyer is not correctly informed concerning interrogations, seemingly to put the policeforce in a angry light. In the press it was, as it happens, written that the lawyers got no time to speak with their client and that he asked that on his birthday of tomorrow to evening leaves was heard. the suspect did not awnser”

this part of the text is completly translated wrong. it’s also an important paragraph.

translation should have been:

“He was also asked why his lawyers did not correctly inform the press concerning the interrogations. Probably to make the police look bad. In the press it is written that the lawyers did not get any time to speak with the suspect. they also wrote that on his birthday, the suspect was interrogated from dusk till dawn. The suspect did not awnser.”

next paragraph (wich is also important)should have been:
“The suspect is again told that he explained he and the missing girl walked a bit. and he is told that they (the police force) have a declaration of someone who has seen Deepak Kaploe’s car a couple of hudreds of meters away from the fishermans hut. He is asked about the logic of some things and the is asked if he can explain why he and his friens where there. the suspect did not awnser”

the phrase:”These boys say that he alwas take them in the maling and manipulates” must been translated with this: “these boys say he always makes fun of them and manipulates them”

another really bad translated paragraph:
“the suspect was asked to take off his shoes. the suspect looked for support from his lawyer, they did not look at him however and he starts to write. he once again made an urgent requedst, with a slap on table”

this must have been:
“The suspect was asked to take off one of his shoes. The suspect looked at his lawyer for support, but he (the lawyer) was writing and did not look back. The suspect put his shoe, after an pressing request, with a loud bang on the table”

please try to make a good translation next time (dont use the online translation sites!). the most important phrases in the text have all been translated wrong.

Rammstein at BFN translated the above document as follows:

We,

Jaquelline Josette de WINDT, head officer with the Korps Politie Aruba, attached to the section surveillance of Sint Nicolaas.

Antoon Ronanld de RUITER, sergeant of police in the Netherlands, region Utrecht, districht Utrecht South East and appointed by National Decision by the Governor number DWJZ 3473/05 dated July 27th 2005 as special temporary officer of the Korps Politie Aruba.

Clemens Johannes Maria BURGWAL, sergeant of police in the Netherlands, region Utrecht, districht Paardenveld and appointed by National Decision by the Governor number DWJZ 3473/05 dated July 27th 2005 as special temporary officer of the Korps Politie Aruba.

State the following.

On Monday August 8th 2005, at approximately 09.48 we, the reporting officers, questioned in the police station of Oranjestad in Aruba, the suspect

Joran Andreas Petrus VAN DER SLOOT
born on August 6th 1987 in the Netherlands and living at Montanja 19 in Aruba

for further information.
The interview was conducted by us, reporting officers de Windt and the Ruiter and in the control-room, I, reporting officer Burgwal followed the interview via an internally installed video-system. And by me, reporting officer Burgwal a summation was made regarding the interview.

For the description of the interview room and the control room I refer to a seperate police report made about this.

In the interview room was also present the lawyer of the suspect, named mr. O.R.G. Faarup.

Suspect made statements to questions put to him, in an abridged version, the now following:

Suspect was congratulated by the reporting officers for his birthday. He smiled.

Suspect was then informed that the District Attorney on Aruba had filed a deposition with the court with regard to extending so that the temporary arrest warrant would be extended to September 4th.

Suspect was onces again informed of the statements that were made by his friend Freddy and people close to Freddy.

He was also asked why his legal team was mis-informing the press with regard to the interviews in an appearant attempt to put the police in a bad light. In the press it was written that the lawyers were not given time to speak to the client and that on his birthday he was interrogated from the early morning to late at night.
The suspect did not answer.

The suspect was shown/informed that he had stated that he and the girl went for a walk. And that there was a statement of someone that saw Deepak Kalpoe's car at a location that was several hundred yards away from the Fishermans hut.
He was asked about the logic of this and other issues and whether he can explain why he was there with the other boys in that particular location.
The suspect did not respond.

He was again confronted with statements made by several of his intimate friends that he had screwed them/hung them out to dry by lying and having sexaul relations with the girlfriend of one of his friends. These boys say that he has been constantly fooling them and manipulating.
He was again confronted with the statement of the girl Martina, who was offered a beverage during the sexual relations that caused her lips to feel tingly.
The suspect did not respond.

After that there were several confrontations with regard to the date of giving statements by several witnesses, the omissions in the statements of the suspect and the omissions in the statements made by his fellow suspects and the timeline in which those statements were made.
The suspect did not respond.

Suspect was asked to take off one of his shoes. Suspect looked back and wanted to find support from his lawyer but his lawyer was not looking at him and was writing.
He put it on the the table noisily/with a bang.
The reporting officers then asked him why he was wearing K-swiss shoes size 14 on the day in question when he now was wearing size 10.5 shoes.
After the suspect had put his shoe back on, I, reporting officer de Ruiter pressed down on the nose of the shoe and felt that the toes of the suspect fit straightly and properly in the shoe.
The suspect did not respond.

The interview was concluded at approxmimately 11.30.
