Casey Anthony does not represent Colonial High School
November 1, 5:27 PM
by Elizabeth Randall, Orlando Education Examiner

Casey Anthony, the young mother and suspected murderer of missing toddler, Caylee Anthony, went to Colonial High School in Orlando, leaving in 2004 one credit short of graduation. The Home of The Grenadiers on Oleander Drive recently celebrated their 50th anniversary, but not their notorious former student.

On a Topix blog, former classmate Rob Swiebel described Casey as “normal,”  “popular,” “fun loving,” and “very smart.” She belonged to a travel club and liked photography.

"Being brought up at Colonial High School, you know, like, not to trust authorities; I mean, that's just life at Colonial," Swiebel said. "You don't really learn a lot about books. You get street smart from that school; you're definitely street smart." Swiebel continued to describe how different high school life was at Colonial.

"I mean, you know how to talk to cops, you know how to do everything, that’s just the way of life there." Casey Anthony, 22, is in custody in Orange County facing charges of murder. She has been incarcerated off and on since July 15, the day Caylee was reported missing. She is still listed on Colonial High School’s reunion list at Reunion.com.

Colonial High School is getting a bum rap.

In 2005, Orlando Weekly ran a story featuring Colonial High School as a microcosm of diversity with an enrollment of 3,700 students, many of whom were products of "generational poverty," according to principal Dr. Paul V. Mitchell. The student enrollment was a mixture of one-third white, more than one-half Hispanic and a minority African-American population.

To fight failure, his school devised administrative calendars divided by subject matter. Each calendar states individual objectives of the Sunshine State Standard benchmarks, the number of days required to teach it, sources used to teach it and the assessment method used to measure it. In addition, each objective was integrated with subject matter.

"If a world history teacher is teaching 'main idea,' so is the English teacher," Mitchell said. "Even physical education teachers cover FCAT benchmarks." Teachers had magnetized benchmark banners which they posted on white boards to review skill mastery.

Mitchell also implemented a tracking system devised by a Colonial High resource specialist, through a networked database that enable tdeachers, guidance counselors, FCAT prep teachers, assistant principals and Mitchell to check each and every student grade, every single week. He also implemented after school and Saturday tutoring.

In spite of all this, Colonial High did not make "adequate yearly progress" as defined by No Child Left Behind. Mitchell was philosophical.

"A big inner-city school like ours; the president had some pretty good ideas. FCAT, well … it made me think of education differently. I saw the "A Nation at Risk" study come out. … We moved into whole language [a controversial educational theory] in the '80s. Now we're swinging back to basics. I've always been about kids and learning. I'm real proud of our kids and teachers. It's a good community, good kids. I tell them to roll up their sleeves, and let's show them. It's a challenge."

Does this sound like a school where authority cannot be trusted? Whatever Casey Anthony has done, the roots of her problems do not extend to Colonial High School.

This was posted in the questions for MURT thread yesterday morning by a new member of SM.  I think he/she had a good description of what Casey did each day:

It does make a difference if the person is from the prosecution side or the defense side.  But here are a few questions that might be asked, either way:

  1.  If Casey has a reason for waiting so long to notify the police about Caylee, why not say it now?  She claims she waited out of fear for Caylee's safety if the police were called in, but everyone knows the police are involved now, so that reason seems to be gone.

  4.  Where did Casey go with Caylee during the day over the past two years when she claimed to be working but clearly was not working?

Great questions...

I've been wondering why the Anthony Family hasn't been asked #1 for a LONG time.  There's nothing to be afraid of now. Since the "word" is out and people were looking for a "living Caylee" for awhile now, what's to be afraid of ...  Moreover, the Ants want people to continue to follow up with tips and look for a "living Caylee."   The Ants used to claim that "Caylee would be killed if Casey revealed more info because if someone went to the right apartment, they would kill Caylee."  Well, if that were true, why should ANYONE look for a live Caylee - wouldn't she be killed if anyone found her?

I think I can answer #4.  Casey didn't go "anywhere" for the past 2 years while she was supposedly working.  Remember, she had concocted this fabulous job - a job with unpredictable hours where she could "work at home" as well as at an office or at an event (event = Casey's personal socializing).    Also, remember, Tony roomies said that she'd be at Tony's during the day claiming that she was working from her computer - she didn't need to bother with the fake "leave the house" routine there.

Casey would "pretend" to leave the house shortly before George would leave. Casey knew the exact time that her dad left for work everyday.  She would time her leaving a few minutes before he left.   She would leave for a few minutes (maybe just park down the street), wait until he left, and then return.  Then, once back at the house, she'd put Caylee down for a nap, and then surf the net, or whatever.  Sometimes she and Caylee would go shopping.  Sometimes, Casey would leave shortly before Cindy would come home from work; sometimes Casey would be home when Cindy arrived "working from her laptop."   Casey would often then announce, "I've got to get ready to work an 'event.'"   Then, Cindy would babysit while Casey went to a fun party while Cindy thought she was working a Universal event.

By creating this "flexible" job, Casey had a readymade excuse for the rare times that her parents might come home early or whatever.  Because her parents worked "set schedules," Casey could "rely" on them being gone for a set number of hours; this allowed her to play this game.

Thanks klaas. I agree with this poster 100 percent. It's what I have been thinking since "day 1".

I fail to comprehend why are active members of law enforcement and the military are not automatically involved in the search in an offical capacity?

Janet, this is to my best guess. WE are all involved in the Missing Caylee Anthony saga, but most country is not. Florida has more missing people, crime, etc. to concentrate on and they consider this a closed case. They have their proof that Caylee is dead. Yes, finding the body is important, but not enough to waste more time and money on. There are other people out there that are counting on LE to protect them or find their missing loved one. The Ants have been uncooperative to say the least and I'm sure it's just not in the budget to find this one missing person out there that is dead. They would rather put their resources on finding a live child who's family is NOT playing games with them. It is only because of dedicated people like Tim Miller, LP and others that this search is even going on. Otherwise it may have been dropped a long time ago. Sad but true, there are plenty of missing children every year that are never found. The state only has so much money to spread around and in their eyes, this is a done deal.

Florida Bar To Investigate Baez For Hugging Casey In Jail
Friday, October 31, 2008 – updated: 5:00 pm EDT November 1, 2008

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- The Florida Bar Association will investigate attorney Jose Baez to determine if jailhouse hugs with Casey Anthony are violations of its ethical standards.

The Florida Bar Association made a ruling very very quickly that Jose Baez did nothing wrong.

I completely disagree with the Florida Bar spokesperson's reasoning.  A vulnerable client may sumit to inappropriate behavior from an attorney ... an attorney who is considered a lifeline in a time of crisis ... an attorney who is in a position of power.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) -- Jose Baez will face no disciplinary action from the Florida Bar for his jailhouse incident with client Casey Anthony .

According to published reports, Baez was under investigation from the Bar. But spokesperson Susannah Lyle said that hugs are permitted by their rules between attorney and client as long as the client does not object.

According to Lyle, a Bar Association rule must be broken in order for there to be an investigation. At this point there is no Florida Bar investigation into the incidents.

Jail officials said Casey Anthony and her defense attorney, Jose Baez, were seen hugging on two separate occasions and were told both times that it was a violation of jail policy.

Though there is no surveillance video that would show the two hugging, jail officials confirm seeing the two touch on two different times.

The jail released the following statement:

Mr. Baez was observed hugging his client on two occasions. He was advised that this is a violation of jail policy. After the second incident, he was again advised of the policy and said he would remember in future visits not to engage in this behavior. Orange County Corrections considers this a closed matter."

No officers had to go into the room to separate the two, and the jail says the matter has been closed by the Corrections Department

Casey remains behind bars at the Orange County Jail without bond. She is scheduled for a pretrial on a first-degree murder charge in December.

http://erickacourtney.wordpress.com/2008/11/01/casey-anthony-could-overturn-convicton-for-her/

Casey Anthony, could overturn convicton for her….

relationship with Jose Baez. A woman filed charges against Jose Baez with the Florida Bar. Which will spark an investigation. It is not known as of yet whether their relationship has been compromised or not, but if at anytime if it were, Casey could come back and use that for her benefit, thus overturning any conviction. What the hell?

It is said that if a Guilty verdict is found, then Casey can state that she and Jose Baez have been intimate, and therefore, he was unable to defend her properly due to attached emotions. Once again. What the hell? Say it ain’t so. I have yet to understand this thing. Why would anyone not see the conflict of interest here? Wow, I didn’t believe it, until I saw it. It almost seems planned that they would appear to be close and then after many warnings, state that he did not know. Then after that we find out that if there is a guilty verdict for Casey, she can come back and say, sorry, but my attorney Jose Baez and I were really close and a physical relationship developed over time. We made love and then his feelings for me grew, and although, I did not stop him, I did not feel the same. He is a sweet man, yet, I just don’t feel the same.

Jose Baez is conflicted because of the turn in our relationship, therefore he is unable to defend me to the capacity in which my case entails. People that would lead to a dropped case. WTF IS THAT? no freaking way. Yes way, it can happen and the attorneys are speaking about it. There needs to be some kind of way that we can stop this from happening. I don’t know how, but come on. The visiting attorneys (meaning attorneys not assigned) to the case all say that it can happen. They had a vivid discussion about it today and it was the first time I had ever heard of this sort of thing. Damn, what are we in for with this trial?

Really? Western just reported what she saw on the Internet, love the way people put spins on it.

Eyewitness News broke the story of the displays of affection between Baez and Anthony at the Orange County jail where Casey is awaiting trial on charges she murdered her daughter, Caylee.

Casey and Baez have been seen on numerous occasions hugging each other, holding hands or sitting extremely close. Law enforcement sources said while at the jail, Baez would sit extremely close to Casey. During one visit an officer had to separate the two and warn him about what was called inappropriate behavior.

The jail would only say Baez had violated rules for hugging Casey on two occasions. In an internal email, a corrections officer wrote, “I spoke with Mr. Baez concerning his continued physical contact (hugging) of his client."

A jail spokesman said, "We do not allow contact for security reasons.”

The first time Baez was warned, officials said he told officers he did not know the rules, and was sorry and would make an effort to remember.

The jail email said, “Mr. Baez stated he was upset as he hugs all his clients. He went on to say he would hate for a brief to be filed in order to correct this."

Jail officials said at one time, there was video of the meetings between Baez and Anthony but that video had been recorded over.

The complaint with the Florida Bar was filed by a woman from Indiana who had read about the incident online and felt Baez overstepped his boundaries. The Bar said it would investigate the complaint even though the woman had no involvement in the case. Baez could have his license revoked if the Bar deems the conduct inappropriate but license forfeiture would be extreme in a case such as this.

I agree. I don't think they could have had time to even review the info that was sent.
There are hugs and there are hugs,hand-holding, nuzzling.
Anything that brings your profession into disrepute is worth taking a while to examine surely?
I cannot imagine my Professional Licensing Board responding that quickly with blanket approval of the behavior.
Oh well...

http://erickacourtney.wordpress.com/2008/11/01/casey-anthony-could-overturn-convicton-for-her/

Someone with a very active imagination..
